My Tonemaster had its main board fried by lightning strike. I had it fixed at the place i bought it. Don't exactly remember what it cost, but it was somewhere near 200 Swiss francs, parts and labour. Insurance paied for it, but I thought that was pretty reasonable. Didn't take long either.

The guy at Psionic audio looked at the workings of the amp and found that the amps were tech repairable (module aside). Fender do sell replacement modules through their dealers if you trade in a broken one. How long they will make them is of course a question.

The amp dying has a simple solution. Let every Fender dealer stock modules and sell them as replacement units, at cost (hundred bucks???), *provided* you turn in your dead module. Forcing a turn in eliminates someone making their own cab-speaker unit with a low cost replacement module. By the way, the Red Giant LP/CD/t-shirt arrived! Thank you. Love the tunes.

Great Dave. I'm seeing the Tone Master amps creeping into backlines on festival stages everywhere over the last couple of years. Actually, if Vox would make a digital lightweight AC15 as Fender are doing with their amps, then it would be my go-to amp without hesitation.

Problem is the traditionnal « Vox sound » is supposed to be dirty-ish, and we know the problem with those digital replica amps is when it comes to dirt. At least the tonemasters do a very good and realistic « Fender Sound » (fender clean). But if a (digital) Vox could not do a proper Vox Sound, that would be hard to sell (especially if it costs the same price as a used AC15, a toneX, or a quad cortex).
@jonbeatlesfan3 күн бұрын
@@paressehyltonNah, when I think of AC30, I think of early Beatles and pseudo Fender-ish cleans. And anyway, the Bassman ToneMaster is evidence that digital modeling can pretty well nail dirty sound at this point.

I have the Tone Master Deluxe Reverb in blonde as I prefer their 12" Celestion as opposed to the more brighter 'country' sounding Jensens in the black ones as well as the less bright firmware. I love it! It is, circa 2025, literally the perfect amp for me. It sounds superb, especially at low volume with the "attenuator" switch. It also takes pedals superbly. Those saying they don't frankly baffles me! Yes, the DR's don't have an effects loop. You really do NOT need one. Any gripes? Yes, I think they are a tad expensive (Dave's Bassman especially) and we are maybe paying for the Fender name. Now, as for the reliability question Dave correctly raises we are just into unknown territory. We just don't know. However, it is a digital device ostensibly so just as an interesting comparison I have a Yamaha FX500 digital effects unit and I still like to use it from time to time as it has some unique effects. Now when I bought it the sales assistant did forewarn me the battery might last "maybe 5 years tops" but to teenage (at the time) me that sounded aeons away so it never bothered me. My FX500 is STILL working on its original battery. It has done 100's of gigs and recording sessions and has NEVER failed me once. Also worth noting the Tone Masters of course don't even need an internal battery. Oh, by the way... I'd better mention... I bought my FX500 back in 1991.

I love that technology continues to develop and push forward in these amps etc, i just think for me building up my modest collection over the past 30+ years, its not worth it to me buying into the digital stuff since i already have a lot of the analog gear the digital world is still chasing after. If i was starting out now from scratch, I'd probably buy into it no bother. During the covid lockdown, I bought a tone master deluxe reverb, which i kept for 3 years. It was absolutely a really good amp, but there were several reasons why i eventually sold it for a valve DRRI. Financially, it made sense at that time. I got a great deal on a used DRRI and, at the same time, a great offer from someone to buy my TMDR, so it cost me very little to switch. I already had an 8 ohm Torpedo Captor X, so silent playing with headphones or attenuating was already covered with the change to DRRI with even greater flexibility than the onboard cab sim of the TMDR. The actual "issues" that i had with the tone master were as follows: the TMDR sounded great clean, but it didn't sound anywhere near as good as a valve DRRI when cranked up. The midrange does not respond the same, it is in a different place. The TMDR got too loud, too quickly, and stayed clean longer when compared to the DRRI. I also found that the TMDR also struggled to get a good sound with some pedals, especially fuzzes. Some of these issues may have been related to the neo speaker. I know the goal was to save weight, but keeping the same speaker as the DRRI would have maybe been a better choice, as many seem to prefer the TM offerings with creamback speakers. I like that in the bassman they have stuck with the same speakers as its valve counterpart. Lastly, i mostly use two amps wet/dry and like to mix and match, but since all of my other amps are analog (valve or solid state), it was impossible to get the speakers in phase due to the latency of ADDA conversion in the TMDR. Like i said, it was a great amp, it just didn't suit for what i wanted it to do.

Those will be on the used market at 1/2 the price in a year or less, like all of the TM amps are. If it fails, the cabinet and speakers can be parted out and sold on Reverb, and you'd be out a couple hundred dollars. That can be considered "rent" that you paid on the amp. Fender is making a killing in profit margin on those things.

Loud enough or quiet enough for any room/venue using the built in “attentuator”, huge 4x10 sonics, sounds awesome (I don’t care if it sounds exactly like a vintage Super), takes pedals great, the line out sounds great, and it weighs 32 lbs - less than my Deluxe Reverb. Even better than having modules, which makes sense for replacement in case of breakage, having the amp downloadable so you can choose which you want would make sense. The gubbins of the amps are all the same, it's purely an algorithm. However, on the reliability point, these should be pretty rock solid. Eg: there's hardly ever any helix units going faulty etc. The tech is pretty bomb proof so whilst it could break down, it's highly unlikely too within any reasonable time frame from new.

Great demo Dave! Now that you tweaked it, the bassman sounds a lot better than it did out of the box. With your settings, it is kind of similar to the silver jubilee, although not identical. Every amp has got it's sound, right? I really liked how the neck pickup of the stratocaster sounded. It's still kind of harsh, but perhaps it's the microphone peaking. The way you used your guitars with it perhaps you should ask Santa to lent you his Red Guitar, to test with this amp. After all he is Santa, he will understand!
@justarthur17883 күн бұрын
I don't know for sure but having spoken with fender in the past about products they were keen to help even out of warranty. As long as it's still in production I think Fender absolutely will send you a module. The bigger issue would be how long they'll make them for but that's the same with any digital product. People buy TVs and phones for more than the amp costs and just replace them. I've had my tonemaster deluxe since they came out and then the super reverb. What I've saved on tech fees and tubes is significant. I've had them enough years that if they crapped out now I'd contact fender ask about my options and go from there.

Marshall did do a ''Marshall Modelling Amp,'' that's essentially what the Marshall JMP1 rackmount pre-amp is, but the models are analogue circuits controlled by a digital / MIDI system. Looking at their website, they do the CODE range of amps that have digital models of Marshall amps as well, and even though it shows pictures of both combo and head versions of CODE, it appears only the combos are available. I'd very much doubt you have to worry about reliability of the electronics TBH, I have solid state gear still going strong after 20 - 30 years, I recently blew the dust off my Roland GR-33 Guitar Synth, and I had to replace the coin cell in it, which are cheap, readily available and easy to change. The only problems I could possibly see happening with gigged gear like this, is a connector popping off the board, I'd suggest opening it up, if there are no warranty seals, and check that all the connectors are properly seated and secure. Also, while you are in there, make sure all the nuts, bolts and screws are secure. After the warranty period has expired, check again, and then secure the connectors with ''hot snot'' (Hot Glue Gun Adhesive). The great advantage of hot snot is, it's a strong adhesive that is very easy to cleanly remove without damaging anything, unlike contact adhesives like Evo-Stik. Nuts, bolts and screws can be secured with engineer's adhesive like Loctite Medium Strength thread lock, DON'T use high strength as it can be a bugger to undo anything without heating it up to burn the adhesive off should any maintenance or repairs need to be done. In general, the advice above is valid for any gear that is being thrown around a van and gigs TBH.

If/when a tube amp fails, what's the cost to repair (parts & labor)? Very likely (depending on the failure) the cost will come close to-- or exceed the cost of a Tone Master. That's how I've reconciled owning a Tone Master Deluxe over a tube version. Remember, tube amps require regular maintenance, and tubes + labor aren't cheap. If the Tone Master lives three years or so, it's paid for itself compared to the tube version. If it lives longer-- bonus, you're saving money & your back at the same time!

The most valiable element in this amp is the cab : the speakers are approx 400 EUR in retail, custom made wooden cab with tweed is another 400-500 EUR - its more beneficial to buy this Tone Master instead of wasting time and building simmilar cab - thay you need to boult a copy of Fonder 5F6A tu put it in ant it will cost you next 500EUR for parts and another 500 EUR for work if you can't bould it on your own. And you still can't be shure that it will sound as it should. Peaple think then non tube amp have to be cheap - but the sound comes from the cab and speakes and they have to cost becouse materials for tha cab are expensive - in the end a decent digital/tranzostor amp will not be cheap. It's a vicious circle. The price for Tone Master is not taken from the moon. It's just a mindset of people who don;t accept a good non tube guitar amps. Boss Katana with stock speaker it "meh .... ok", but with a hi quality cab is a killer !
