watched your videos. Have been a welder for 45 years. Can get a sheet of 20 guage 4x8 for 39.00 dollars. Going to try my hand at this, this winter on my 98 3500 dodge dually. Going to work on the rockers and door bottoms. Going to order the cab corners and go from there. Most common sense old school work I have seen in a long time. People like you and I are about gone. Thank you for taking the time to teach me this. I am a retired boilermaker, pipefitter, and fabricator. Also hand weld food grade stainless tube, fabricate and weld Aluminum and a lot of cast iron, old school. Never tried this but about time.

The hole "moved" for one or both of two reasons. The patch was the thickness of the metal further out on the pipe and once lowered to flush, it closed up around the inside curve of the pipe. It may or may not have also flattened out a bit while working on it. No matter, pretty difficult to anticipate beforehand and your regular M.O. of making things fit better as you go is the best solution anyway.

I say your right on all accounts. Also I noticed watching the video myself the alinement of thr fender was off to begin with. Look at the body line. It high at the start. It all went south after the let the bottom bolt go.

I seen a nice looking one the other day with the rust in the roof and I asked myself if I've ever seen a video of you fixing something like that and wondering how hard it might be. As the son of an old body man, so many of those sounds take me back to my childhood. My dad stopped doing work like that years ago but I now have all his tools in my garage, waiting to be used again!

Its a method thats been around a long time. Funny thing is you never saw it much in mags. I bought how to books as a kid and none have it in it. Even today you don't see it as much. Whats sad is I figured it out on my own. Took a good few years. Don't have many sheetmetal guys in these parts and 30 years ago we never had youtube. Lol

Enjoy your videos. Wouldn’t it have been easier to tack the patch in place then remove the fender and do the whole job on the bench?? If you wanted to put a curved lip around the hole, how would you have done that? You are truly a “metal artist”

You are right about removing it but I was trying to do the whole job without taking it off. I failed. Lol. As for lip. Yes I make a band and slide it threw the hole and weld it on. Trimming it after.

@@ahill7099 i find from projects in the passed with similar issues i always found that my measurements would be off. The hole be too high to too far to the left or right. Slope plays a part in doing these. Taking centering measurements don't always put the hole where you want it
