Fender Pawn Shop Excelsior and Ramparte

I picked up the Excelsior last year on a whim as I'm mainly a bassist, but also do some sideman work on harp as well. Solo I mainly just perform with an acoustic guitar live, but I figured it'd pair well with my harp and with my Tele for recording purposes. I was completely blown away with how much I loved it. My Tele straight in, about halfway up, dark switch mode and with a bit of the Trem gets this awesome swampy tone for lead work and layered arpeggios in an arrangement to add some really cool vibes . Great oddball amp and a real hidden gem. Great video.

I bought one of these new back in the day and currently use it in conjunction with another amp (Peavey Valveking 20MH into 1x12 cab). The Ramparte being more present in the middle and higher frequencies allows it to mix well with a more bass heavy amp. I play through the cool channel with the volume on about 6 and the Valveking on the 20 watt mode, clean channel, with both the clean and master volumes dimed. That combo with a fuzz pedal is so much fun for doom/ stoner metal. I'm set to buy another Ramparte tomorrow that I'm gonna make into a dedicated power head

Ramparte sounds fine to me, but I agree - the Fender Champion 600 sounds amazing for such a tiny amp. Not boxy at all!

The clean channel on my Ramparte had very low noise, the dirty channel does hiss and hum a little more but it gives a lot of distortion. Now is super quiet, I changed the tubes for some 7025 (Russian). And sounds super detailed and warm with a Rola 12” speaker from 1948. I really sings.

What's it like for home use? I have a chance to pick one up tomorrow. I don't know much about tubes and that, but if i can do an easy tube switch to make it nicer id be up for that.. I'm not really expecting much, more just ad a bit of fun as it's a cool looking amp.

I was eyeballing the Excelsior pretty hard back when the Pawn Shop Series came out, but in this comparison, I have to say I like the Rampart more. It actually has that nice swampy sound like my old '60s Danelectro and Airline amps have. The Excelsior with the bright switch on just sounds like... well, a modern, cheap tube amp; kind of thin and fizzy.
