Oh my god my heart warmed so deeply when your little kiddo appeared on screen, and outright melted when you let 'em just fiddle around with your guitar while you were playing. You seem like such a good dude and loving father. I was about to comment about my appreciation for the follow-up video after your last one on the FR12, but it seems so unimportant now. Love your work and your vibes, will be joining your patreon as soon as my budget allows for it.

I've been using the Fr12 since October 28th. The response this cab gives along with the output adjustments you can make on the fly + the high cut makes it near perfect. My only gripe is the small hiss sound that emmenates from the 1 inch driver, high cut removed most of the noise, and you can easily add that freq back in on the global EQ. There is a hardware fix for this issue, as discussed on the fractal forums, but I'm not certain it's enough of a problem to warrant me chasing down that fix any time soon.

I find a lot of users don’t fully undestand how to use the Powercab (how unlike a guitarist to not read the manual). I use mine with a Helix Floor with output set to +9dB set to FLAT. I then back of the high on the Powercab globals by -3dB. Matches the sound of the Bose PA fine. Some people don’t realise that any of the other setting are the speaker without mic through the cab and so won’t sound the same as the same cab on the Helix itself. The real bonus though is when you use the AES connection. I can feel the immediacy of touch with one less ADA conversion. On a side note there is gap in the market for an instrument to balanced line level DI box for plugging into FRFRs

I have the same setup. I'm a long time Line 6 user (Flextone XL, Vetta, Helix/PowerCab112+, Variax 300, 700 & standard) and love their stuff, but they over engineer things. K.I.S.S. goes a long way. You're setting the PowerCab option in the Helix to FLAT and +9dB? As far as I can recall, you only get 6 dB of gain with the Helix PowerCab settings. I've also found the PowerCab speaker options all color the XLR pass through to FOH. I'm thinking of selling my PowerCab for the FR12; I like the fact that you can pass through the amp/cab settings on the Helix to FOH and and still get a good AIR feel. I think the PowerCab is a great piece of gear, but I can't figure out how to do that. I can get a good FOH sound, or a passable AIR sound, but can't seem to be able to do both using the power link. Maybe I'm missing something.

@@peterworam9376The Helix Floor set to +9db not the Powercab. BTW the PC will go to +12db. The flat setting is the only PC setting that doesn’t add a mic to its xlr out.
@peterworam9376
@peterworam9376 4 ай бұрын
@@davidyelland908 That's the problem. You end up having to run a separate line from the Helix for FOH. The powercab doesn't have an option to pass thru the XLR/L6Link input to FOH when using the LF Flat/Raw/Speaker modes for AIR response. It's one or the other. Also, having to dime the Helix output for the Powercab causes problems with anything going to FOH. That was one of my initial beefs with the Helix/PC combo - the Helix PC level setting needs more than +6db to get the PC input in the operational sweet spot.
@davidyelland908
@davidyelland908 4 ай бұрын
@@peterworam9376 Surely Flat is meant to simply amplify what you put in and not to attempt amp in the room? The XLR out is active for all settings too. BTW the Helix Floor XLR outputs are at +12db max. I run mine like that with the volume control set to 1/4 only so it can't accidentally affect my FOH level. I am just checking levels into my DAW. With the input gains set identically and using line inputs, the digital out on the Helix Floor needs to be set to +12db to match the XLR outputs. I think the idea of the amp in the room only really works as intended with Line 6 cabs. Idea being pick the same cab as you were using in the floor unit for the PC. You must then turn off the cab in the HF. The PC then models the speaker as AIR but adds whatever mic you chose to the DI.......but not in Flat/Natural. Unfortunately now that the cab engine in the HF has been updated, we will have to wait and see if the PC gets the same as at the moment you can't move the mic position across the speaker. Don't you just love it when only part of a system gets upgraded. Lastly the sweet spot only actually matters for the models and not the Flat. BTW I feed the PA direct from the HF as I often have to play on a silent stage.

Nice follow up review John . I’m sure others will say the same but if you are used to playing through amps the noise floor hiss is always there. If youve been brought up with Multifx and modellers through a set of monitors you will notice it. Great video ! Very informative. Albeit I would add the other biggest issue with modelers is the inability to easily set the volumes to all presets to the same level. If only there was a way to have a master and “easily” set all patches to hit at the same level. Now THAT would be a game changer. Don’t get me wrong…I’m not saying it can’t be done….just not easily.

They only had a demo in the store that they would not sell so I scored one at Sweetwater, rather buy it there anyways & get the free 2 yr warranty. Also got a cover for it for additional $25 bucks. I think the price point is right, sounds & feels like an amp in the room which I was truly missing, It's lighter that the FRFR powered monitor I was using. Can't wait to use it at the next gig. @crew66 Not sure your level of soldering experience, but it is quite simple. Buy the OPA4227PA from Mouser (too many other counterfeit ones sold elsewhere). Then you have to desolder the old ones. I use a Hakko FR301 desoldering gun. You could save money by using a desoldering sucker/pump for about $15. (Then you can either put a socket in so you can drop in the new opamp, or you can solder the new opamp in and leave it for life (that's what I did). Great upgrade! So quiet I forgot it was on!

You do great work John. I have a couple questions - first, have you tried recording directly through the XLR output to see if / how it colors the signal? And I can't seem to find any info online as to whether the output is just a *through* of the raw signal from the modeler that remains unchanged regardless of any changes made to the tone and volume knobs, or if it reflects the changes to the knobs. Also wondering if you've tried the Boss GX-100 through it yet (the poor Boss doesn't get enough love, and it seems to me to be the best bang for the buck in that range)

I've got about 15 gigs in mine with 3 full band rehearsals and it's better than anything else that I've owned plus the looks don't hurt either. As far as the hiss goes, if I put my ear about 6 inches away I can hear it otherwise it's totally silent in fact had I not read about it in a complaint I wouldn't have known it existed. The hum from the power section of my tube amps is louder so it's a non issue. I tend to run my presets a bit hotter and that might be because of the other FRFRs that I have so gig level has me running the master on the Fender around 4 and I use it as a traditional amp. Any higher and it's too loud. Great video, thanks John.

Tube amps are heavy, and I’m always waiting for failure. I’ve been lucky but I have some UAFX sims and I am into them. And did I mention tube amp load out?

John, we’re going to need a gig report on this. If it replaces your current setup of tube amp and cab, then it’s legit.

If Fender was smart they would make a way to connect this to their tonemaster pro digitally to eliminate a DAD conversion and reduce latency... They also would put a feature in all of their tone master amps that it could double as a limited version of this thing.

But the cab is analogue, so you'd still need to convert at the cab. You'd just be moving the conversion from the modeller to the cab.

Great to hear there is a good frfr (for not crazy money) out there. I’m assuming that for at home use you’ll still just stick to the studio monitors? Ie, this a solution just for when you’re out and about?

If it sounds good in studio monitors, but sounds bad in an 'FRFR", then the that speaker isn't an FRFR even if it's marketed as one. The powercab definitely isn't actually FRFR.

Its amazing how, given that many prominent youtubers have mentioned this time and again that, FRFR cabs which look like guitar cabs are not more of a thing. Especially taking into account how much things have moved in that direction. My wish is someone would do it in the THR/Spark40 style desktop form factor. fwiw I have two stomps. I use one with a spark running a "flat" preset. That's what I play with most. The other is permanently hooked up to a PC and used with studio monitors.

Maybe the design of them at a reasonable price has been hard for manufacturers to get together. Like you I would have thought Fender would have had loads of competition by now, but they don't. So few companies are tapping into this market. I ended up using my old heavy tube amp and disabled my IR's in the global settings because I couldn't find a solution I liked. It's only now that I can see myself buying something.

@@angrygoldfish I can see that obviously a small FRFR isn’t as useful with no models and I’m told the THR does have a flat mode. My mate with one also gigs with a 100w mustang using the studio preset with a stomp. I’ve also found that ‘flat’ for FRFR isn’t as straightforward as it seems which I’m assuming is why there’s so much variance with cabs

Hi - picked one up (largely on your recommendation) - using with Helix - and sounds great at home...gigs coming up. Do you still use the helix cabs when using this? (they seem to work fine so far, but wondered what's best for live). I did not notice any hiss at all. Also, at gig, did you run the helix direct to PA or did you use the FR12 out to PA? any sense of what works best? Thanks!

Don't know if still relevant but usually, especially if it's not clean but overdriven/distorted, with a cab IR it should sound good and not harsh.

I think a lot of the hiss complaints come from a younger generation of guitar players who cut there teeth on modelers and plugins. That hiss is a welcomed relief compared to alot of amps.

Dont know if you mention the weight, but as far as I can see, it is more than 1 kg heavier than the Tonemaster Deluxe Reverb, for example. Still lighter than a tube amp, but I would have hoped for a lower weight (8-9 kgs ish) I'm guessing it's not a dealbreaker for you, but it might be for older guys? How do you find the weight and size - easy to throw in the car?
