According to the Fender/Squier web page, the pickups are no P90s, but "Alnico Soapbar Single coils".. Is that due to brand/license issues, or are the pickups physically different from P90s?

I just built a parts caster based on a Gibson LP Junior. I found a double cut tele body with a single p90 rout on reverb. I added two switches one to bypass the the volume and tone pots and one to toggle between different tone capacitors it's rips! Although I found out Tele enthusiasts absolutely hate DC teles lol. I personally love it. I wanted something different but classic looking. It became my #1 Overnight.

Thanks so much for this. I’m agonizing about the Beato DC being outta reach and looking for a bargain to give my first P90 experience. Then comes this. I LOVE Fender & Squier. The key here for me is that distance relationship between bridge/pickup. You are seriously helping my decision process as I can NOT bring myself anymore to shop a big box store for comparison (horrible service) so this is great info to narrow my focus before I order. Love your channel! 😎

Check out an Eastman SB55. I got the double cut version and it is amazing. Its the most resonate guitar I own (Gibson CS R0, Suhr Pete Thorn Signature, Fender American Ultra Strat, etc.) Build quality is on par with Gibson custom shop, much better than a Gibson USA production guitar.

I’m a big P90 fan. With a P90 you can avoid the need for an overdrive pedal since you can control the degree of breakup by how hard you play. That Squier would make an excellent companion for my Yamaha RevStar RSS02T.

Thanks for the video Dylan! I really appreciate your comparison of the guitars. There is something about the Squire I really like. Would love to have one in yellow with your pickups. I'd probably change the pots to better ones and prefer locking tuners. That would be an awesome guitar like no others I have.
@dlewtweentorla1210 Жыл бұрын
Surprised you didn't change the pots and switch during the pickup swap. Would be intersting to hear the difference between the guitars with all electrics being equal. Those are some sweet P90's you've developed, I'd be swapping those pots to get the best out of them. Got to admit, wasn't a huge fan of that squire when it was launched, the stock pics did it no favours. Seeing it in this video, looks much better, after hearing your opinion and listening to its tones.... has peaked some interest. Thanks!
@andrew6889-p5c Жыл бұрын
Thanks for these careful videos. Really like your work. But, not to be annoying, these tone comparisons are not done in the “best way”. Tone differences are almost always really subtle. So there is no point playing a long piece then doing it again on different setup. Far better to splice your video together with many very short back-and-forth comparisons. Just a single identical chord, or a single lick is enough. Then repeat. I also appreciate that you then gave your personal impression of the difference too. Even if I disagree, it’s a useful data point to have. I also understand that KZbin messes with sound so much that your impression might be far more accurate than what I hear. Anyway, thanks so so much. It’s annoying of me to criticize when you are doing these with a lot of skill and care.

Dylan, I don't see the issue with series taking off the highs. That's expected, as that's what happens when you wire wire single pickups in series. The alternative option is to put it into parallel mode. Problem solved. No reason to replace the pickups. Other things that can be done is to experiment with the pots.

I would love to see what that could do with some 500k stacked pots for independent volume and tone control on each pickup and ability to blend them in the middle position. Just personal preference, if it's a LP type guitar I like to be able to blend the two in the middle position. I love my Teles and play them with the two shared pots. I got a Les Paul Special Tribute double cut with the single volume and tone knobs, figuring I would play it like a Tele but just couldn't. I found myself constantly looking for the ability to turn volume or tone up or down on a single pickup in the middle position.

I seriously miss owning P90 guitars. So versatile! My first was an Amazon $130 (shipped) DC Junior Firefly similar to that TV yellow you played in the vid. Not ideal, but it did have a "baseball bat" style neck, and after a Grover upgrade? I couldn't put it freakin' down! My next was the Iverness Green Worn SG that Epi put out with the new Kalamazoo headstock. The freakin' QC on that guitar was absolutely atrocious! Even after upgrading the tuners to Kluson Revolution G-Mount 19:1's, and working on the frets?! I just couldn't gel with it. My third P90 guitar was a Fullerton (Aria-pro) Mosrite clone from the 90s-early 2000's That guitar was incredible IMO! Unfortunately... During Covid I was forced to liquidate a lot of gear : ( Those guitars, along with all my amps, and most of my pedals all got sold : ( This Squier tho?!! I definitely must have! LMAO! One day... It will be mine. Great demo dude! Cheers!

I personally don't believe a single coil guitar should have a wrap around bridge, but a standard tunomatic style bridge with a stop bar to compensate for, at least in my perception, a lack of low end, unless you mean to operate it mainly with both pickups simultaneously.

First time here, the red and the P90's just sucked me in. LOL I'm 71 and I've been at this guitar thing for a long time. We started a new blues trio and, although I have 30 some electric guitars, I don't have one with P90's! With all the whoop-la over the Yamaha RevStar I bought a standard w/P90's. 1 week later, not my bag, sent it back. Hmm. I have 3 Strats and I know I like them, I even have a Squire CV 50's Tele, I kinda like that, and I like the looks of that Strat w/the P90's!! I just hope the neck isn't real thin, but I do have 5-6 Strat necks kicking around. I like the tone of your pups too, but I'll probably change pots/switches/jack/wire/caps. Did you use the stock tone cap? .022uF? Thanks much, great video!! 8) --gary

I have this guitar and the paranormal cabronita's - thinline and baritone. Imo the two best mods to make right away are gotoh sd-91 tuners, stock ones are hot trash, and a good bridge, sock are lightweight and not quality materials. I like weight and brass = tone and sustain. I went with gotoh on the tele's. Going either golden age or schaller on the strat. Tbd. It really tightens them up and makes them play and feel so much better.

I actually preferred the Squier and the yellow double-cut to the SG Jr. because I think they had better dynamic range. This surprised me because I love the sound of SG Specials. But compared to the other two guitars it seemed to be less articulate sounding. The Squier seemed particularly airy, metallic, and Strat like when cleaned-up, even with the same pickups. I wonder if the saddle placement made the difference as Dylan said or if it’s all in my head because of the subconscious association of the Squier’s Strat body with a Strat tone.
