Attention beginners: One most important thing he omitted to say was after re-stringing, and tuning to pitch, the strings then need to be stretched individually. You will probably have to do this a few times, stretch the strings so they maintain good tuning stability, all the time checking tuning with an electronic tuner. After a minute or two, they will be good to go!

My rule of thumb for feeding the string into the peg winder is to stack my four fingers at the 12th fret ( looks like I'm karate chopping the fretboard ) and run the string over my hand and start feeding the string into the peg. That usually allows 4-5 inches of string slack to wind the string.

Two things I find helpful: 1) use your wire cutters to snip the string bag; then it will easily tear across the top and save the guide; 2) I tune my guitar a half to whole step up, let it sit for a while and then re-tune. Stretches the strings without the awkward pulling on them.

Tune, gently stretch the string, then tune again. 5. after all strings have been installed stretch them, GENTLY because I know how you like to thrash, then tune again.

Finally a clear and straightforward video, some people find a way to complicate changing strings as if you're working with explosives. I've also found conflicting information about whether to change strings at same time vs one at a time. I think as long as you know what you're doing and not leaving the guitar stringless overnight, I think it's fine. Just a matter of preference.

@plaidman67
@plaidman67 7 жыл бұрын
Hi there. Yep. I cut my strings before the wind just as this gentleman does in the video. I pull the string to the distance of 2 tuning machines beyond where I'm going to put the string and then attach the string. With the tuning machines I have on my guitar, I have to do this because they require that I point the tip of the string down into the tuning machine, then bend the string around the cylinder part of the machine, hold it there and wind. I hope that makes sense.
@plaidman67
@plaidman67 7 жыл бұрын
My tuning machines don't have the hole on the side of the machine. They have a slot cut across the top and there is a hole down the center of the tuning machine (When looking down on the guitar from directly above it) where you insert the pointy end of the string. Once the tip of the string is inserted into that hole, you keep pressure on the string so it stays there and bend the portion above the hole into that slot and around the peg in the direction you are going to wind it. Then whilst holding it there tightly with 1 hand, wind the tuning machines to tighten etc...

While giving the low E-string all the attention (on length and how to wind it), all other strings got no screen time. I was looking specifically for a tutorial that really show a step-by-step tutorial. I mean, this tutorial assumes that the viewer has already changed strings many times. Suggestions: what's the angle the string is inserted (or does it matter?) // Which way to turn to machine head (both is possible, which is best?) // how many windings per string? // tuning order (E-E, A-B and D-G, or in order?) // and on removing: how to get a stuck ball-end loose (yes, that does happen). I was very pleased with all the attention the E-string got ... 2 stars. For effort

Although there are varying methods and steps to change strings, these are preferred steps:1. Unwind, remove and replace ONE string at a time keeping tension on the neck and on the tremolo spring (if a tremolo system is installed).2. Cut the new string AFTER it is wound around the post, preventing the wind from unraveling. Before cutting it, tug the to-be-cut end with pliers so to remove unwanted slack. On vintage-style posts, right-angle bend the string before cutting it. You may need about 1/2" to insert into the Vintage-style hole.3. On non-locking, traditional-height posts, with a .09-.42 set, 2 posts for the low E may be a bit too much length...1-1.5 posts may be enough. Because of decreasing string gauge, the 'post' length can be lengthened with each subsequent string, concluding with the high E at 2-2.5 posts.4. Winding a string back onto itself is optional, but doing so will assure that there is no slippage. 5. Windings should go from the top of the post downward.BTW, please bring back the Stainless Bullets!
@mike__1258
@mike__1258 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed on not cutting all of the strings at the same time. I was always taught to cut not more than two strings at a time as not to cut complete tension from the neck.

I'm not sure whether I should hate or love Fender on social media. They could do cool posts about their heritage, documentaries about the good old years, and despite of all musician clichés that are around on the internet, they show you how to put 9s on a strat thats levels above the ones of players who don't not know how to change strings on it...

They could be doing this for people who own Squier guitars. I dunno, but the concept is the same for all strat style guitars.

For those people saying "Don't take them (strings) all off at once". No reason is given why this should not be done but I guess it will be something like - it will damage the neck or throw the truss rod adjustment out. I have never damaged a neck that way and I have not seen the truss rod adjustment go out either, this over decades. I check my truss rod adjustment regularly and especially after changing strings as I always adjust intonation at that point too. Checking intonation is something I do regularly as well. I ALWAYS take off ALL the strings at once. Reason: I am not a grub and always clean my fretboard when I change my strings. If you have tried cleaning your fretboard with the string on you will know why that is a bad idea - you will get lint caught up on your non-wound strings which form into balls. The first time that happened to me as a kid I got the bright idea of using a lighter to burn it off and popped a brand new string. If I do wipe the sweat off my neck I always use a hard cloth, not those guitar cloths. I'll agree this video is next to useless overall and the only time you would clip new strings before winding them on is if your Fender had Kluson tuners. So "never clip before you wind" is not true either.

Thank you! My father has one really old electric guitar which I play around with on Rocksmith. His guitar is really dirty and tons of stuff on it, i can feel the strings is getting hard to play on. I notice the guitar body took some damage as well, but it still works. I though about to clean it up a little and give it some new strings. I believe these strings have been around like over 15 years or so. My father had this guitar like before my birth, which was over or around 22 years ago.

I would Recommend only taking off one string at a time. Removing all six can dramatically change the pressure on the neck. Relieving then adding pressure again might cause some problems. Take care of your instruments as best you can by taking every precaution to keep them in top shape.

Nice video, so easy to understand! But...I disagree with removing all strings before restringing, as you release all neck tension and then reapply when you restring. This could cause some tuning issues as it takes time for the neck to settle itself down again. Do one at a time and you avoid that problem.

To be fair, in the long run, it probably doesn't matter, because there will be times when you need to remove all the strings at once anyway. On a Les Paul, you have access to the truss rod and bridge saddle adjustments without touching the strings, but on other guitars (e.g. my Johnny Ramone guitar), I have to loosen all strings to access the truss rod, and likewise to remove the bridge so I can loosen the saddle locking screws underneath the bridge so that I can then intonate.

***** Hi. I have an American Deluxe Strat with the locking tuners. I've been having slipping issues with the 5th and 6th strings, as if the locking tuners are not holding them in place tightly during string bends. And if one string goes out of tune... After consulting my manual, I saw a "clock method" described for string locking tuners, but this is VERY confusing! The manual mentioned that there is no need to wrap the strings around the post. With other guitars, this is how I avoid the slippage. A detailed video of how to string my Fender with the locking tuners and the clock method would be very appreciated! Thanks for making my favorite guitar!

Hi, I have a question, I recently changed strings from 0.11’s to 0.10’s on my strat. But the high E and B strings won’t let me bend a m3rd. I can bend the string very far, but the pitch only reaches a whole tone by the time the string is bent to its maximum height. Is there something I need to adjust at the bridge? Thank you.

I've experimented with using Rouxinol R30 Strings which include a Pick I can use to play the Guitar & they have a Wound 2nd String which I find has a more plesant sound than the Plain Steel 2nd String because the Wrap Wire actually softens the tone a little bit.

Interesting how Fender says it's OK to take all the strings off. My Ibanez manual states that it isn't OK as you'd put stress on the neck that way which is kind of puzzling as when you take the strings off, don't you take stress off the neck?

its got to do with wood humidity and the bending of the neck since it doesnt have bolts to support it...The biggest problem is Taking the strings off and leaving it off of a guitar that has had strings on for years but its normally easy fix by adjusting the trus srod but adjusting the trussrod on a vintage guitar is not what u would want to do ....better to avoid having that problem

Foo Rankoo I used to have an Ibanez RG7421 in black. I figured I would be able to play low rhythm parts on it but my hands aren't the biggest and the wider neck just wasn't for me. Also, Ibanez goofed up cutting the grooves in the nut which led to issues with playability. It had fret buzz which a luthier I took it to said he wasn't able to fix as well. So I sold it. I just play Yamaha now. They're great, great guitars.

Hey thnx for this video! Quick question, you mentioned that you should wind the first winding above the inserted string through the peg and the 2nd winding below it to secure the string. Is this just for the last/bottom three strings? Because for the first string you showed winding the string below the inserted string. Would appreciate clarification..thnx

Good video. Just let viewers know that fender standard tuning keys nickle 013 are staggered style. Compare to squire affinity if you're planning to upgrade a squire affinity HSS Like what I'm doing to mine i just notice them lineup on table. Little upgrades to my Squire HSS. I do have a 1993 fender which non routed Both squire affinity and fender standard are 10mm holes. Both of my guitars are apart I shouldve looked at them before. This video helps alot I can see tallest tuning is low E and shortest tuning key is high E. Therefore this strat in video has staggered tuners.👍🤘

I think one of the most important things in this is to make sure you wind the strings the correct way. He says "to the right", but following that was ambiguous and caused me to waste a pack of strings. Also how hard do you have to hold down the strings while turning the peg? I guess I did it wrong because there was some tension slippage under my finger, and the strings were too loose with not enough excess. This video didn't help me, and I wasted a pack of strings trying to follow the directions.

Completely disagree! Most sensible guitarists advise replacing all the strings at the same time - otherwise you end up with gnarly old "dead" strings being used along shiny new bright ones. There's a reason why they sell strings in sets rather than individually. The only thing I'd take issue with is most seem to advice avoiding pressure on the neck which can cause warping by alternating the strings you connect ie position 6 then position 1, then position 5 then position 2, rather than the way he shows in the video of taking the heavier strings first and working your way across the neck to the lightest.
@NosferatusLair

Ian Smith you read me wrong, i meant to change one single string at a time when changing the six strings set. the video shows him removing all the strings before putting the new set on. doing it this way will change tension on the neck altering the neck action and throwing the guitar completely out of whack. remove old string, replace with new string, tune it up, repeat process with all 6 strings.

@TheStrangerInTheRye
@TheStrangerInTheRye 10 жыл бұрын
brynigga If you used the same gauge of string then you can just keep it in tune and wait it out, it should go back to how it used to be. The relief of the neck is the result of how tight the trust rod is, and how tense the strings are, if you take all of them of at the same time you effectively change the relief, so your strings will go flat a few cents, then you'll adjust, go flat again etc until an equilibrium is reached.
