The big show in Rantoul is held on old Chanute Air Force Base. I was stationed there 55 years ago. Always brings back memories when I see tractors lined up on one of the old runways. Chanute had an Aero Club that owned 5 airplanes and I learned to fly in that club.

Haha, I know exactly how you feel. I’ve restored 4 different tractors from my family members, Grandpa’s and great Uncles…… and while wire brushing simple things like the clutch or brake pedals, I could smell the hog manure built up on them, and they were the only ones who ever raised them😂 little things like that seem to connect me to them, even though they’ve been gone for 30-40 years👍

Balls said the Queen, If I had them I would be King. At least the balls were bigger than the missing needle roller bearing ones that fall out when you are putting the transmission input shaft in.

If you look at the oil pan, those pans are "pot bellied" shaped. Yes it's around 10 balls total. If my memory serves correctly, certain models for both Ford and Fergies always had this issue.

Good job Ross. Imagine if you were paying someone else to do this, how long it would take and the shortcuts that you'd find out about years later.

A little duct tape and superglue, and perhaps a bit of bailing wire and that pully will be just fine;

That's the same governor system and oops the balls are in the oil pan problem in the later Fergusons, at least the 35 model I have several copies of. Probability is the balls only fell in when the cover was pried back.

That happened on my dads Jubilee and one of the balls got sucked up in the oil pump and snapped the oil pump shaft, then no oil pressure and it scored the crank bearings. Great video.👍👍

I'm at point of removing crankshaft pulley on my TO 30. Trying to figure how to keep from breaking it. Dont want to pry very much on Governor cover since it's aluminum. My book shows using a bearing splitter clamped into the pulley belt "V" and using a puller on that. That pully is pretty fragile.

Your not the only one that didn't go to Rantoul. Too hot. I'm surprised that you can find those governor parts, very similar to the MH 44. Those were also Continental designed motors. I wonder if the Obsolete Continental parts place in Chicago would have them?

great video Ross. Love the history that you provide on the tractor. I hope they came up with a better part design being that it seems to be a weak point. Good luck.

I have a 2003 VW New Beetle TDI (Turbo Diesel). The service manual states that to remove the battery (which has nothing on top of it) an experienced mechanic would need 20 minutes. So, not all German mechanical contraptions would fit our bodies. I'm writing this before you open the oil pan, but I think there's 7 missing balls. There should be two where the retainer broke off.

Cool that your working on your great grandfather's tractor. My question is, where do you buy parts for a Ferguson tractor? Are they grandfathered under Massey Ferguson, and ultimately Agco? Just curious.

Im thinking thats a Continental Z134 engine? Hopefully you'll find the parts easy enough. I've got a 135 and it must be a earlier one since it has the Continental Z145 in it before they switched to the Perkins engines. Mine is so worn out that #1 fouls out almost every couple of hours of operation from oil getting past the rings. I keep thinking I'll overhaul it one of these winters but it just keeps on running. Im thinking the Continental parts are getting a little harder to come by, like some of the other older parts. It doesn't look like they changed much really between the Ferguson to the 135. I dont like to see you struggle, but i enjoy watching and learning from your videos! Thank you very much

The manual says it's a Z129 Continental engine. The tractor is a 1954 model.

@@richardrieckers9567 oh. I'm not a expert by any means on the little Massey's or Fergusons but I haven't heard of that one. The common ones seem to be the 134s and 145s. Hopefully they shared enough parts so that they are still available. That's good that you guys are able to keep that tractor in the family

Makes one wonder if engineers don't sit in a pub and see who can win a stupid design contest. The aforementioned item is designed to totally frustrate any of us brave (stupid) enough to attempt disassembly procedure(s) without destroying said item or dismembering an individual's body parts in the process.

I don't feel like you are being silly. It's the little things that people have used in the past to make their life easier, which important to some of us. For me, it's kind of a spiritual thing. Like the things they touched or used for years. I've been struggling with replacing the steering wheel on my 42 farmall b. It is starting to fall apart, and I still struggle. I believe the balls fell in the pan when you took the cover off. I'm surprised the ball retaining ring didn't come apart and go through the gears.
