If you combined flour and sugar,the yeast would process the sugar 1st until its supply is exhausted,then and only then would it feed on the maltose in the flour.

Can someone explain to me where the foam comes from? And why does the sugar produce more foam than flour? Did the experiment earlier today, and the sugar produced quite a lot of CO2, and foam aswell, the flour did also procude only slightly less CO2 (we measured balloons), but had no foam what so ever, we had the yeast mixtures in water for 10 minutes.
@ciencias3344
@ciencias3344 7 жыл бұрын
The foam is trapped CO2 molecules. The sugar is a simpler molecule so it is easier for the yeast to consume. The flour is made out of more complex sugars so it could not eat as much of that one... Hope this helps

Wait would yeast undergo fermentation even if there is oxygen present in the conical flasks? Because I read if there is oxygen present, then the yeast will only undergo fermentation if the sugar substrate is in excess? Is this true? Nice video btw :)

how much water should i add to the yeast and why. i really need to know why it is for lab
@mugsycarter974

good question, the water is the environment the yeast live in so there should be enough to totally dissolve the yeast. amount isn't important as it is with the other ingredients. I used 100mL, i think, in this experiment

Does yeast eat/consume starch(potatoes/rice/corn...etc.) ? Is it similar to table sugar ?
@mugsycarter974
@mugsycarter974 6 жыл бұрын
Good question. The answer is yes. Starches are carbohydrates, and carbohydrates all also called sugars because they all contain the same building blocks. Whether its starch or table sugar, all carbohydrates can basically be broken down to glucose and used for energy by yeast (and humans, for that manner). The only difference is that sucrose (table sugar) is much smaller and can be broken down faster for energy than starch.

@mugsycarter974

The flask with no sugar or flour probably fits the best as a control. You could also argue for the flask with boiled yeast.

What is the Independent variable
@mugsycarter974
@mugsycarter974 3 жыл бұрын
In any experiment, the independent variable is the thing that the scientist changes. You could ask yourself 'What did he change about each of the flasks?'. This experiment is tricky because I didn't just change one thing, I changed several things in each flask (yeast, food, and temperature). A better experiment would be to just change one of these things, such as changing the amount of sugar in each flask.
