I work in a new winery. Even in our 160k tanks we use a 3 inch valve at the bottom. So getting some lumps out of a 27L fermenter shouldn't be an issue lol. That is as over engineered as it gets, I think I might have to finally upgrade the 23L glass carboy I've been using for the last 5 years. As someone who believes homebrewing is part artistic expression and part beer cost saving, this is soo much more suitable to the blue collar home brewer than those ridiculous stainless steel vessels and equipment that cost thousands. Each to their own, but I believe this is exactly what the humble 2019 home brewer should be looking for. Kudos
@KegLand5 жыл бұрын
If it wasn't for the incredible blocking power of hops we could probably get away with a smaller valve but the amount of hops that people are putting into beers these days really necessitates a 3inch valve.

AWESOME!!! I picked mine up on Monday from the KEGLAND store and have a Zombie Dust clone fermenting away as we speak. It was awesome to come home after work tonight (24 hrs later) to see the yeast rolling around inside the fermenter happy as a pig in shit!!! It wasn't the best fit in my fermenter fridge but after some clever cutting (of the fridge not the fermenter) and removal of unwanted gauges and temp controllers it fits like a glove now. I see so many negative reviews/remarks about this fermenter. From my personal experience it's a fantastic fermenter. It does what I want - enables me to dump yeast without moving to a secondary vessel, it enables me to fermenter under pressure, and most importantly it enables me to perform closed transfers. I see remarks about how hard it is to clean without getting scratches, there are several ways to clean plastic without scratching the product. Try micro fiber cloth, it works great. If you are worried about UV light then cover the fermenter or invest in a insulated jacked. A lot of the negative reviews are regarding issues that can be prevented by the user. If you don't like the product, don't give give it a negative review, especially if you haven't used it.

You mention dry hopping with the bottom container. Would the method be to pitch the yeast with the valve closed and then when ready add the canister with hops and open the valve? How would one remove the hops later on? Or am I missing something? I’m confused as to how to dry hop while under pressure and not have an explosion of foam.
@KegLand5 жыл бұрын
Most people would pitch the yeast using the opening at the top. If you are making a yeast starter though you can make the starter in the collection container and then just open the valve and the yeast will find it's way up into the fermenter fairly quickly. If at this stage you want to add additional oxygen you can also fit the carbonation cap and the carbonation stone to the post on the collection container and give it a shot of oxygen too and this will bubble up through the collection container and into the fermemter body. When dry hopping you can also use the collection container and put hops into the collection container and the hops will tend to float up into the body of the fermenter and then after about 1 day they will start to sink back down into the collection container.
@pow06er5 жыл бұрын

What is the maximum safe temperature that the body of the fermentor can reasonably withstand? I use silicone 100 watt adhesive heat pads on my stainless fermentors (one on each unit), but I am thinking of increasing my capacity and am considering one of these units in 14 gallon. I would like to be able to use the same process heating.
@KegLand2 жыл бұрын
It's important to understand the difference between safe temperature at no pressure and safe temperature at pressure. Of the Fermzilla is not under pressure you can take them up to 55C. If however you are using it pressurised then you should not exceed 35C. 400watt sounds way too powerful. I would have thought that 20-50 watts would be plenty.

HDPE is good as it can handle more heat but the issue with HDPE is it's very porous and can harbor microorganisms in the wall. Higher fermentation temps without off flavours. Faster fermentation. Less oxygen, which means lower risk of oxidizing beer. Oxygen free transfer to keg is easier. Beer gets naturally carbonated during fermentation. The advantages are many.
@KegLand3 жыл бұрын
More than under pressure, I like the fact that you can do a closed transfer into a keg post fermentation.

I have Fermentasaurus and stainless conicals. They both have their pros and cons. I do like to see the fermentables. Price is definitely an advantage upfront. But my stainless ones will last a lifetime. Can't say that about plastic. Ditch the annoying music please.
@KegLand5 жыл бұрын
Yes that's fair to say. The stainless steel will probably outlast the plastic. With that said in 5 years from now we will probably have even better new design features and most likely we would have another model available by that point. We do sell replacement plastic tanks at a very low cost and but the speed of which the home brewing industry is changing you might find that it's just easier to upgrade the product when new technology becomes available rather than spending all your cash upfront only to find that brewing techniques and hardware has moved. Going back 20 years we saw conical fermenters made with ball valves instead of butterfly valves, we used to see stainless fermenters that had no way of holding any pressure at all, spunding valves basically didn't exist and customers were brewing with far less hops. So the gear needs to change to suit the trends, new innovative ideas, and the more we learn about brewing the better the gear gets.

Better than stainless? Cheaper and lighter doesn't make it better.
@KegLand5 жыл бұрын
Yes I would agree. Cheaper and lighter is not the major selling point. The major benefits are really: 1. You can see the fermentation process is a huge one and not possible with stainless 2. The dump valve is larger than most stainless fermenters 3. The collection container is a better design that most stainless fermenters 4. This can handle pressures that are higher that most other competing stainless conical units So i would say that these 4 things are really the main advantage over most stainless fermenters no so much the weight and cost. So we would agree with you on that.

Why is plastic better than stainless? The container of the Fermzilla cannot be used under pressure for more than two years... More microplastic in oceans...
@KegLand2 жыл бұрын
The FermZilla can be used for many years. You can use it for 20 years if you want to however you will just have to do a hydro test after two years from the manufacturing date. The hydro test is easy to do and you should also be doing a hydro test on stainless steel fermenters too. If stainless steel was clear and you could see the fermentation in action I would totally agree that there would be no need for the Fermzilla, but alas nobody has been able to make clear stainless steel yet. Microplastics in the oceans caused by fermzilla tanks is a potential problem but to solve this we would ask that customers do not disposed of an old fermzilla in the sea or waterways. Please use a proper recycling facility. If you do not have one close to you return the PET container back to kegland and we will ensure the container gets recycled rather than thrown into the ocean.

@KegLand5 жыл бұрын
@@cameronb1000 If you want a stainless tank to ferment in that is pressure rated and you dont need a cone to dump yeast then you cant beat the Kegmenter. If however you want to see what's going on in the fermenter and also dump from the cone then I really think you can't beat the FermZilla. So it comes down to what you want to achieve.
@KegLand5 жыл бұрын
You can't see through stainless so being able to monitor the fermentation process, make decisions on adding finnings or monitor hops settling out is more difficult. None of the standard stainless fermenters that I am aware of can go up to 2.5bar with a safety factor of 2. You can probably get one designed but not aware of this actually being available as a standard bit of kit. The dump valve is larger than most stainless fermenters that are normally sold with only 1.5inch tri-clover butterfly not 3inch. We have a number of new accessories that are also available with these that are will not be available on many of the stainless tanks. For a better comparison if you can specifically tell us which stainless fermenter you are looking at and we can do a run down on the comparison for you if you like.

@KegLand5 жыл бұрын
If only we could see through stainless and injection stretch blow mould it. Then stainless would be perfect.
@beerman19575 жыл бұрын
@@KegLand I never said perfect. I said SS is better than any other material used in brewing. Plus I actually don't want my vessel to be clear because UV light will penetrate and I don't want my beer skunked out. Last point to make: I just bought a stainless fermenter from Anvil for LESS than your Fermenter. So, it isn't way less expensive, is it?
@KegLand5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for bringing this up. I think it would be best to put all the information out there to answer this particular comment. In the near future we will have three different ranges of FermZilla 1. FermZilla - Conical Unitank - This one in the video 2. FermZilla - All Rounder 3. FermZilla - Flat Bottom The one in this video is the 27L FermZilla Conical Unitank and this is the most expensive of the three being $129 Australian dollars. (that's about USD$90 based on today's exchange rate). So firstly I dont think you would have purchased your ANVIL for USD$90. Secondly the Anvil fermenter is nothing like the FermZilla Conical Unitank as it doesn't have a cone you can dump out of, it doesn't have a collection container, definitely will not hold anywhere near enough pressure to carbonate in and dispense directly to tap. The ball valve has exposed threads that are arguably not sanitary and definitely ball valves in general are not a good idea on a fermenter as they have several small cavities that are hard to clean out and they are not designed to easily disassemble. With the FermZilla All Rounder this range will have an RRP of AUD$80 and this will hold pressure but have no dump valve and that works out to be about USD$55.86. The FermZilla Flat bottom Fermenter will be the cheapest of the range and this will have RRP of AUD$30 and this will be the product that will be most comparable to the Anvil. This works out to be USD$20.95 So comparing the Anvil to a conical unitank is not really a fair comparison. It should really be compared with another non pressure rated flat bottom fermenter and when compared in this way the FermZilla Flat bottom will be heaps cheaper. On the topic of light transmission it's fair to say that beer is very sensitive to light damage. In direct sunlight beer can get skunked in 15min but very few people just have the fermenter sitting outside in the sun. So more relevant would be skunking indoors. With indoor light beer will take hours to get skunked (probably more than 10 hrs as the intensity of the light is so much lower). With that said we also still would not recommend leaving the fermenter sitting near a light globe for this reason. What we would recommend to anyone with ANY fermenter is to have some type of insulated and temperature controlled environment. At a minimum this jacket would be a good idea: www.kegland.com.au/jacket-for-27l-fermzilla.html But if you really want to do a great job then I would recommend using an old fridge and using a temp controller like this: www.kegland.com.au/mkii-10-30amp-temperature-controller-heat-cool.html This can be used to turn on and off the fridge and heating device and fully control the temp of the unit. So given the fermenter should only be exposed to light for the few moments while opening and closing your fridge door or putting the jacket on and off I would say it should be easy to limit the indoor light exposure to under 5 hrs which is well within the taste threshold of when skunking would be anywhere noticeable. With that said we are open to further discussion if you have further comments on this topic.
