I always found Fern to be so tragic and sad, I almost feel like his entire life after being turned into the Finn Sword was just one huge constant gaslighting. I found it kinda sad that it felt like everyone just lacks tact in this world, maybe if Fern was handled with a bit more sensitivity, he could have turned out for the better. I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt that, okay maybe they didn't realize Fern was the product to the Finn Sword getting cursed (correct me if I'm wrong, it's been a while!)? Because I feel, if they had known that this was Finn Sword that they would have known that it was the literal Finn that Finn turned into a sword.

I feel the same way. Fern IS fin. Up until he got turned into the fin sword he had his own jake, life, house. He was just normal fin. It shows what fin could have turned into if his fate was as terrible as ferns. The way they all treat him is horrible.

Yeah, I feel what you're saying. Fern, even if he chose his new identity and coming to terms with his situation, was, and still is, Finn the Human. Not only was he basically turned into a sword (literally named "Finn Sword", take it as you will) but he was also corrupted by the Grass Sword Demon (or whatever dafuk it was) and was basically forced into a role where he was no longer Finn, but basically a character who had no reason to exist. You may argue that Fern was a new being entirely due to the circumstances beyond his, or even Finn's control, but the fact that he has Finn's memories but is forced to create his own identity is pretty much a middle finger to him. Even when he was killed by Finn accidentally, he was used by Gumbald as a foot soldier in his cause. And by the end of the series, he was practically killed off without him really growing as his own character with his own story.

There's an episode in season 2 called blood under the skin it's about Finn feeling exposed because he doesn't wear armor but at the end he realizes that he's stronger without it it's interesting looking back because when Fern becomes the Green knight he wears armor as if he feels exposed and tries to hide his emotions

"two swords" isn't the only tarot reference in titles of episodes related to fern and finn, there's also "three buckets" which is referencing the three of cups. three of cups, when upright, represents cooperation, harmony, and working towards a common goal. reversed, it implies isolation, exclusion, or social pressure to fit into a certain role. i love how these themes appear in the episode in so many ways, as well as for Fern's whole arc, it's very fitting that it's the last episode before he's resurrected and changes completely.

I re-watched adventure time as an adult. And all I can say is Fern felt like the self who was fine and matched your sense of self when you were younger, but then....imposter syndrome hits, anxiety, depression, low self esteem, questioning of purpose, questioning desire, questioning relationships, the separation between impulses and solutions that were fine as a kid but now frowned upon as you're an adult and the spiraling sense of losing identity, trust, confidence of self, and the trap you fall into when someone tells you "this is what you should do" because somewhere in life.. youve lost your map or ability to navigate on your own.

Always loved the stuff they did with Fern, though I think as the show progressed the writers didn't really know what to do with him - the 'death' was a high point, but resurrecting him just to disregard him until the show's end took something away from that. I think Fern's legacy in the series is much more interesting than Fern's existence - I think the same disregard for his existence is seen in the show itself. Nice writeup, reminded me of why I liked Fern in the first place.

I always found it cute that Fern considers himself more of a "Neptr guy". Not only does Neptr seem to genuinely respect Fern as his own person, as you said in this video, Fern and Neptr are also both outcasts in the treehouse - Finn doesn't really see them as individuals, seeing Fern as just being "Grass Finn" and, as revealed in "Don't Look" deep down sees Neptr as just a microwave. Both characters are akin to offsprings of Finn (though Fern is also an alternate timeline Finn? Time Travel is so confusing), yet seem to pale in comparison to their counterparts - nobody really treats Fern like an individual until it's too late, and Neptr is doomed to stay in the more popular BMO's shadow. But, whilst Neptr did manage to find some people who treat him like an individual, such as Flame Princess, poor Fern ultimately ended up merely a manipulated pawn in Gumbald's game/

I’ve been saying this!! Neptyr is seen as kind of weird-people sometimes bring him along, but they usually ignore him. He’s seen as weird, a background character who isn’t needed and othered by the cast. He’s a “rip off” of a more loved character, and people don’t see him as an actual person. Fern shares basically all of these things with Neptyr. The only difference is that Neptyr is unaware of his treatment, while Fern knows.

I think what the grass sword was actually doing was clouding ferns judgement and messing with his personality. If fern was really finn would he actually be into reading? Even before finn mellowed out and matured, I doubt he was much of a reader, but this fern is? His emotions are kind wonk when he looks at thinks at a more logical standpoint instead of how past finn was just an emotional kid who looked at things as black and white. See someone who looks like a bad guy? Kick his butt. Sees children in need? Help em out. But fern with sweetpea literally suggested they cut his heels. All these terrible choices and bad personality was a setup for fern go spiraling down so that the curse can feed off his negatively, at least, that's what I think.

i can’t help but feel like the grass curse is symbolic of disability, particularly neurodivergence. i’m autistic. autism has given me a lot of problems. in particular, my autism makes emotional regulation difficult, resulting in me suffering from terrible anger issues my entire life, up to and including violence. but, autism is a core part of who i am. autism doesn’t just cause me problems, it gives me benefits - just like how there are certain undeniable benefits to being a grass demon. if you were to solve my problems by getting rid of my autism, you’d have fixed a lot of them, but at the cost of me being… me. for all intents and purposes, i’d be dead, and someone else would have my body. in fern’s case, it just happened to be that his disability was also responsible for him having a body. in many regards, i think adventure time had a neutral ending. it isn’t the best, happiest ending it could’ve had, and the writers KNEW that. and if fern had the time to work around and on his disability, i don’t doubt he’d be more stable and happier, like how i’m less violent after treatment. but just deleting the disability means deleting all that comes with it - including the positives. including yourself. i’d like to compare fern to simon for a moment. simon’s in a similar boat, which is that he lost his curse, but didn’t get the treatment he needed. i’d argue both the crown and the grass curse are representive of mental health in some capacity, but the crown is more representative of things like addiction and depression, which can be cured but requires a lot of time and energy with relapsing being a constant threat, while the grass curse is more representative of disabilities that can’t be “cured” without erasing who the person is, like adhd and autism. tl;dr fern didn’t need the curse to be removed he needed a therapist

We see 3 Finns in the show. The original Finn ends up becoming Farm World Finn because of Finn's wish. Jake's wish ends up creating a new Finn. So now comes the fun part... Fern is Finn 2! (From viewing perspective) Here's way fan fam. When Finn gets the grass blade, he gets a nightmare in which he turnes to grass and dissolves. We know from several episodes that dreams in Adventure Time are extremely important and forshadow a lot of events. Now, which Finn gets turned to grass and then disintegrates? The answer is Fern. If anyone feels like having a friendly debate on this topic, I'm all ears. (Also this does technically mean Fern isn't from a different timeline, tho PB was just saying BS).

Farmworld Finn is not the original Finn. He is a product of Finn 1's wish. Finn 1 gets brought back once the Liche's wish is changed. Farmworld Finn is one of those alternate realities Prismo talks about. I'll explain some of it in an upcoming video.

Fern is NOT Finn from another timeline, because there is no other timeline. Let's say if you travel back in time, and create a new timeline, you would disappear in the original timeline. But Finn did NOT disappear because that timeline doesn't exist. Look at the episode with LSP, time travel in Adventure Time does not allow yourself to meet your past. If you move back in time, you will move back yourself, to whatever you were doing at the time. But Prismo's Timeroom does not work through real time, it's static. Because Finn was able to walk around and back into a room he never left, he was able to see himself through a paradox, that is Fern They were one in the same before they interacted, and they share the same timeline. They are the same person, just only NOW going down different paths Finn did not travel through time, he traveled physically behind himself In other words its like a past self, but they're not in the past they’re still here and your not traveling through time at all. Everything in that episode was happening meanwhile to eachother

When I first saw the "oh, should we do sword tricks then" scene, I was kinda horrified, haven't really liked Finn much since, especially after I found out he doesn't even have the excuse of being a child, only looking young... Like, that is a very f-ed up thing to do to someone, especially when they're already probably doomed to stay a completely helpless observer for the rest of their lives, and the only thing they can do is communicate with you, and yet the one time they disagree with your opinion... Like, that's just so messed up, especially if Fern heard Jake say "we can just make a new sword that looks like you", like, he was just Finn, trying to wake up Jake once, and the next second he was "Finn sword". Not even "Sword Finn" or smth, just a sword, an object, and everybody treated him like one. While the whole Bandit Princess thing might've been one of the worst parts, the version of himself from a few minutes into the future and his best friend weren't really nice to him either... I really wish the series could've been from his perspective since the creation of the sword, tho ik it's too dark for a kids show, and would've just flipped the vibe, the show is just nothing like his story... But, like, could've at least given us a scene of Fern helping somebody in a similar situation to him, while Finn being unable to and lacking empathy for the person... Tho ig that would've stood in the way of building up Fern's jealousy for Finn... Bit c'mon, at least acknowledge that Fern would definitely be more mature after everything he's went through... I don't use Tarot, I like oracle cards more and I've had multiple experiences where I was a bullseye for myself and others; still learning though so will not claim I am the all knowing . You can claim as much as you want "I can definitetly read cards" but at the end of the day if we put it to the test the conclusion will be "yup it was all in your head". It doesn't take away from the practice. The whole thing can be still be pretty cool to exercise even if it doesn work. "Just be open to it" is kinda the standard phrase every woo woo pendler uses to cover their ass that it doesn't "work" for everyone. I can assure you I had this conversation with many other people believing in many other things. They all disagree individually with each other. I just disagree with all of them.
