Craig Burley, Steve Nicol, Alejandro Moreno, Raf Honigstein and Adrian Healey of ESPN FC reflect on Fernando Torres’ career after the former Liverpool star announced his retirement. Burley explains why he thought Torres was the best striker in Europe for a time after he joined Liverpool from Atletico Madrid in 2007. Plus, the panel examine the decline of “El Niño” after leaving Anfield in 2011 and explain why it all went wrong at Chelsea, AC Milan, Atletico (the second time around) and Sagan Tosu.

That link up play for Gerrard's goal at Anfield vs Everton, that goal vs Blackburn!!!, my word that boy was a star. ''You can't buy that I'm sorry, you can't make it, you're either born with it or not, and that young was undoubtedly born and blessed with a unique talent!'' (Andy Gray)

Injuries and also the way Chelsea played didn't suit him. He was also in Drogbas shadow. Probably caused confidence issues. After all injuries alone don't make you miss easy chances when you're as good as he was at scoring

He said in an interview recently that from day one it felt like he was being welcomed into a warm home at Liverpool but he never got that at Chelsea and it felt "cold" in comparison, I think he lost all his confidence when he moved and I don't think injuries helped that. Even though goal scoring wasn’t his main attribute after his Liverpool days he still remained a vital part of both Chelsea, Atlético Madrid and Spain. We should remember Torres as the absolute monster of a striker when he terrorizes world class defenders in PL in Liverpool Reds. It was just unlucky of him to be one of only 2 World class player in the Liverpool team, with Gerrard. The team at that time was unable to fulfill his personal dreams of winning titles. In a way, titles that he won with Chelsea is sort of repayment to his selfless games for LFC. Legend..

I'm not even sure he was a Ancelotti signing, more Abramovich. I remember his first game was against Liverpool and he got a rough ride from the fans who had idolised him, his nightmare continued from there and career declined from how he once was. Summed up perfectly with that open goal he missed against Man U. Maybe he simply peaked early in his career like some players do. What a player in his prime though hey

Injuries plain and simple, the numerous injuries her had robbed him of not just his pace but explosiveness. He was beyond quick up until the end of his second year at liverpool and it was by far his greatest asset. People say the move to Chelsea ruined him but as a Liverpool fan, he was badly declining in the season we sold him. We did very well to get the amount of money we got for him at the time.

Liverpool rushed him back from injury, he was already declining before he joined Chelsea. He may not be the main man at Chelsea but he was certainly adored by most of the fans and he contributed to two European trophies and a FA Cup. Happy retirement, El Nino.

If there was a template for how a number 9 should look like, that would definitely had been Torres at his prime at Liverpool. At that point he was the deadliest finisher I had seen since Ronaldo de Lima.

I am a Manchester United fan but a young Torress at Atleti made me love football. What a player and signing he was for the scousers. He was the only person who could make me clap for a Liverpool goal. What a human being as well. I really prayed for him to regain his form at Atleti and although he became slightly better, it wasn't enough. I still love the guy.

same reason to Owen's decline... leaving liverpool. nah, it's injuries. even during the 2010 world cup, you can see that his injury hampers really hampered his performance. Shame that he never returned to his peak but it's crazy to think that he still got so many memorable moments.

The bloke started first team football as a young man and had a lot of miles on the clock. Injuries never helped nor did the transfer to Chelsea. At his best was at times unplayable but unfortunately that feels like aong time ago. Deserves respect and all the plaudists that comes his way.

If I could bring back one player in his prime out of Rush, Fowler, Suarez, Owen and Torres, it would be difficult but I think I would give El Nino the nod. He killed united and chelsea, some of his speed, athleticism, self belief and deadly accuracy was phenomenal. I miss him a lot. Would love for him to come back for one of those old Liverpool Legend games. I want to see Gerrard and Torres just one more time.

@@manimavuso like they say in the video. Torres story has nothing to do with Liverpool or the big money move. Torres career should be viewed pre injury and post injury. That pre injury period, he would have outperform in any team. That period happened to be in Liverpool is not related to his form.

Torres started out Atlético Madrid, who were a 2nd decision team at the time. They got promoted. Torres made his Spanish National Team debut in a friendly. He moved to Liverpool, we all know how that turned out. Spain won the Euro's in 2008 and the World Cup in 2010, all of which El Niño was apart of. He unfortunately injured his knee, something that I know does take a long time to heal, and it does knock your confidence down a lot. Torres then moved to Chelsea, which wasn't his best of days. However he did have some key and very important moments at the club, for example, the goal that lead them to the Champions League Final. Once his time at Chelsea came to an end, he moved onto A.C Milan, he played much better there than what he did at Chelsea. After a short spell there, he returned home to Atlético Madrid. There he got the momentum back, He gained the confidence and was like he never left. Atlético Madrid came 3rd in the La Liga in both the 2015/2016 and 2016/2017 seasons and 2nd in the 2017/2018 season. Atlético also won the Europa League Cup in 2018, all in which Torres was apart of. So next time you want to make a video about Fernando, at least talk about both the lows and the highs. Not one footballer is perfect, no one is perfect. We all have hic ups here and there.

Unfortunately injuries caused his legs to never have the same speed and accuracy he had initially at Atleti then at Liverpool. His goals at important games cement his legacy. Euro’s 2008 Final, against Barcelona Semis Champions League 2012, Euro’s 2012 Final. He won World Cup, Champions League, Euro’s, Europa League, Premier League. Not many can say that. He will always be a legend at Atleti. Now he will go back to Madrid and work for his boyhood team with Gabi, preparing to take over after the Simeone era ends in a few years.

Usually, when you're play awesome, you will be trophy laden..... Behold the power of Fernando Torres. The most anti-thesis football player ever. The most inversely proportional situation. Why? First half - An absolute monster of a striker, almost no one can deny him = barely any trophies. Second half - Declining and a gamble striker, sometimes good, sometimes terrible = clutch play and loads of trophies. Never won a league title, but won all major titles that matters. Whether he is a legendary player or not will always debatable between both sides. He will be the most enigmatic strikers ever play this game. Enjoy your retirement EL NINO!
