The brakes are fed with a single Lockheed master cylinder . Some of the wheel cylinders are made with two different metals..know this, as the owner of 0969gt is a retired analytical chemist...who used a gas chromatograph to determine why they were seating up...dislike metals tend to corrode/oxidize. May be main reason why he doesn't have a responsive brake pedal. I drove his as the mechanic/transporter at FCA 2015 and found this same condition. 18 inch drum brakes, when they work, reported as good as a 60's corvette. Somes drums have six/eight fins that are there for cooling. Beautiful car!

This car is simply stunning. It is actually the first car that I have ever seen that I would say is worth every single cent paid for it. Will it go 0-60 in 2 seconds? No Will it top 269 MPH? No Will it pull 1 G in the corners? No Will it bring a tear to your eye, every time you look at it in the garage, and a put woody in your pants, every time you drive it? Yessir, and the world is better for it.

+1997TL1000 A quote from a TDF owner in the know. " Early in the video Chris Harris introduces Max Giardo from RM Auctions in Europe (www.rmsothebys.com/specialists/specialist.cfm?specialist_id=55) Max is a typical car salesman. He spews facts mixed with a generous amount of pure crap (but I know that he speaks fluent Italian). The car in the video is 0563GT. It was 5th in the 1957 TdF as car #171 (The TdF plate is placed on the trunk in the video but not mounted). It is the 19th car of 93 listed in John Starkey's second book (including 6 "interim" berlinettas). Max says "only 9 were produced". I don't know what he is counting. There were 11 without louvres plus the first 14-louver produced just in 1956. Max also says "Imagine driving 165 miles per hour on dirt roads." The top speed for a 3 liter TdF with the tallest gears is 158 mph. The TdF included 7 hill climbs (where most, if not all, of the dirt roads were) so most competitors used lower rear end ratios. At about 5:50 in the video, Chris Harris who is relatively short) is driving slowly on a one-way road through a small town in England. He says to Max "The brake pedal, I'm pushing it quite hard now, there's not much happening ....The brake pedal is remarkable for its lack of cooperation but you can't really get to it because this beautiful wood steering wheel kind of fouls your knees." When I was driving my car on a regular basis, it stopped as well as my 1960 Corvette with competition drum brakes. I am determined to get it back to that state." f

+wing walker Isn't that the thing about cars though? The mystery of a car and the history, mostly a bit foggy a few lies thrown in, "Oh yeah she'll do a thousand miles an hour in a pinch, but only on the third Sunday of the leap year of every other millennia." But my word, this thing is a think of beauty that just kinda, warps your sense of reality to the point where, piss poor mechanical engineering is simply forgiven. Just simply because of the aching beauty, and amount of wood it produces in your tingly bits.

+1997TL1000 Yes, an apt description of the effect of the Ferrari name itself. At FCA 2015 at Laguna, the 0969gt was in garage 2. A lady of about 45 vintage was dressed plainly, standing about 6 feet from the right door, for about 45 minutes without moving from the spot...I finally took a moment from the preparations and asked her if she would like to sit in the car...she came unglazed for a moment...said it would detract from the experience and declined the offer... without being rude, I would say i had just witnessed a Ferrari-gasm. When we were given access to garage two, I had been rushed to transport the car to Laguna, it had been setting hidden for 47 years. The owner provided his own loading ramps, a poor second to the ones he has now. The very finely dressed lady in garage 3 was laughing at our attempts to safely unload the car with these old ramps...until she saw the TDF safely on the tarmac...very quiet after that. Many different emotions espoused st the meet.

What i mean by " killed their channel" is their reputation. They are the only channel of automotive show ( i think ? ) that you have to pay for watching the full video. Come on, it's youtube, it's meant to be free ( imo ) Theirs last video were full of red thumbs, etc ... Of course i understand it allows them to survive but it's not the right way i think. If some people like me realize that they need the money from ads and disable adblock for theirs vids, it would make a huge difference and that stupid Drive + thing will go away.

I know the 250 GTO's and 250 testa Rosa's go for more money but this Tour de France is just so elegant and I totally agree with Chris and Max- that light blue is the perfect colour for that car. Ferrari should show this car to all of their current design team.

Because my Honda Fit will outperform it in 99.9% of all driving situations. My Fit would destroy this car in the 1957 Tour de France. This is an over powered, under braked, dangerous piece of death. Now it is just a ornament of wealth, traded between speculators, all hoping to get the better of the next buyer.

Your Fit "outperforming" the Ferrari is totally beside the point, and to chortle about "destroying" it in the 1957 Tour de France shows that you have little appreciation for craftsmanship and sheer style (if any at all). Bet you simply adore your iPhone.

An upshift blip of the throttle ? Why do people do that ? It serves no purpose. Please explain.
@MrGaryGG48
@MrGaryGG48 5 жыл бұрын
In a car of that era, there was usually no syncro on first gear and the syncro on the top three gears (4sp boxes back then) wasn't what you expect today. The shift tended to be slow and deliberate or they got "noisy." If you wanted to hustle it along, a little extra blip on the throttle helped to keep the revs matched enough for a smoother shift. On the downshift you didn't have much choice; heel/toe/blip to get in quietly otherwise, another embarrassing grating of the gears. Modern cars have spoiled the driving public to the point that few are really skilled with the older gear boxes. I drove a friend's 1979 308GTB a while back. Older (late 40s through mid-80s) Ferrari gearboxes didn't like to shift quickly when they were cold, especially in and out of 2nd gear. I drove it gently, double-clutched carefully, and had no problems. He was really surprised that it didn't grind at all and asked just how did I get it to drive that smoothly right from the start-up. I took some time that afternoon showing him how to double-clutch a Ferrari gearbox. He's now pretty good at it and drives that car often.

When Chris asked "how would they drive it in period?" The answer is this. Flat out on any road all the time because they could. They also didn't complain about not having no assistance in braking (not that Chris does) they were just more instinctive than that back then... A car was a car and a man was a man and a mans car was a mans car and this is the perfect example. Although in the braking question I think it was a mix of pushing the brake pedal hard and engine braking. Cars like this drive 100% differently than modern design and the simply organic nature of the car makes it better in every way regardless of slow speeds by modern standards. I'd rather have this car or any ferrari of this period (1948-1964) over any car period.

+Adam Othman This car does not have a hydraulic vacuum brake boosted system nor electric pump. This is old school! A Lockheed( or similiar,much like an old VW ) master brake cylinder with a single brake line splitting at the rear and one single brake line splitting at the front, this system plumbed to all four wheels. So you have a large 18 inch brake drum and a hard pedal...but if this car were driven more than stored as a museum piece..the brakes would respond in a smooth,gripping manner as they should.

I don't understand why their videos have been receiving so many negative views. First, you people have to understand that this was inevitable. Let me repeat this because you guys still wont understand. INEVITABLE. NOT THEIR FAULT. They give us amazing videos, and if you want to continue watching them, you have to pay one dollar a week. I guarantee you that at least 80% of you can afford one dollar a week. If you can't? Don't get angry at them for not giving you free service, IT WAS'NT THEIR CHOICE. Why give them dislikes? Would you rather have Drive+ or nothing at all?

I HATE CHRIS HARRIS!!! The man is sooo lucky/blessed to be able to drive marvelous works of art and absolute historical masterpieces! - something most of us can't even dream of; let alone have the opportunity to EVER experience!? I really don't hate him folks ...although I AM extremely jealous! ;-)) At least we get to watch and "live" his experiences through his videos - I am VERY, VERY grateful for that. Thank you Chris!

I don’t know that Lamborghini engines have that metallic ring in their exhausts....Chris seems to express that about the TDF he’s driving....and I can recall one evening walking home from a friends house in Brooklyn.....a black, low shadow of a car moving slowly but steadily up the street, it was dark and the object seemed to be half the height of any AVERAGE automobile you would see ...and moving quick enough that I couldn’t identify it exactly at the moment I saw it.....I was however distracted prior to having it in my field of vision by it’s engine note......it sounded like metal disks sliding around against each other....like metal saw blades spinning up to cutting speed....and it was jet black and Soo very low .....it as a Ferrari 348 Spider....and I want one to this very day....the rear proportions of that car and the subsequent 355 are so beautiful....that Ferrari V8 is a very different proposition to the American V8.....I guess that’s why I love the idea of a 305 Chevy small block being raced in Can Am by Mark Donohue.....as opposed to a 500 cid monster with a blower on it

Beautiful car. Its amazing that a car that was made for driving can fetch a $8.2 million dollar price tag. You see the La Ferrari and all the new era super car where technology drives the price up. Here is a classic driver, driven thousands and thousands of miles over roads that would be consider third world to us in this era. You wouldn't dare drive a new super car like this Ferrari 250 GT.

Beautiful car, and thinking about it, V12 with 3ltr sounds huge, as V12 is a huge engine in any era, specially back then. However, 3ltr was considered a big engine back then, but now it doesn't make sense to put 12 cylinders only on a 3ltr displacement. There is simply too much shafts, and crankshaft, and cylinders, and heavy metal components to spin up fast, and rev out quickly. You can have a straight 6 with 3ltr, and single cam shaft with well balanced valves at the time, and the engine should be coming to live faster. Really strange from today's perspective a 3ltr V12, but at the time it must have been insane, and the looks, and the suspension...awesome Ferrari.

Am I the only one wishing they'd ditch, or rather, park, the car and Chris would take Max for a brisk ride??? Now THAT would be a great video! Max is such a doll. So's Chris. As for the car, I'm more of a Lusso man.

Only in one man's opinion... if you can settle yourself mentally into an old car, period correct drum brakes, "power nothing in the car," period correct horsepower, you don't expect to stand on the throttle to the last possible moment before braking or seeing how far sideways you can get it before everything turns brown & sticky. I have a 16 year old BMW with a healthy 3 liter straight six, 5-speed and all wheel drive. It's probably the most responsive car I've driven in many a year but it's far from the fastest. There's a difference between "oh my god I'm gonna die" acceleration and ripping down a narrow back road in a responsive, quick, tight handling small car that just makes you smile. The car that Chris showed us, while being worth a hundred times the value of my old Bimmer, is similar in that it doesn't try to throw your glasses into the back seat when you stand on it, it rewards your measured inputs with a great deal of satisfaction if you can appreciate that. Thank you Chris... I really enjoy your presentations.

Enzo himself, the very man was a massive Francophile - He loved cycling and French cheese in equal measure aside from creating V12's from the Italian gods.

The car is amazing! The info about it is very complete too! But the video is not well done, imho. And the sound is terrible. Voice is too low in the beginning, then gets a little louder but still the noise of the engine is very low, and then voices are too loud! I think I am very disappointed because of the quality of Petrolicious videos. Maybe are my expectations too big. Although this video is from 2014, so not same technology available either. Aniway the car is wow!!!

You "...know nothing about this car..." How is that possible? Driving cars is your gig and you don't know the Ferrari 250 series or about their mechanicals? I take from that statement that you are not a true car person. Please step aside and let a passionate car lover host.

We should really donate to Drive. I mean this video alone was spectacular to say the least.Yes, I know they have a subscription now but that is because they do not have a budget like Top gear but they can produce Top gear like material. If we all donated a little bit the could get rid of the subscriptions and increase their budget.

I can't imagine any good reason that only nine were built. Seems a perfect car to pull the plans out, add disk brakes, and produce a goodly number to satisfy a hungry market. Could develop an engine a bit more economical to maintain for today's market.
