Journalists back in the day were comparing the design of the GT4 to the Lamborghini Urraco not the Countach.

I loved the fact that you've covered the V8 Dino. HARD FACT Ferrari did make that now famous 308 engine for the Gt4 [ 2 + 2] V8 Dino. Enzo liked the 308 engine but NOT the Gt4 chassis. 1978 . . . aged 10: Even we dumb yocals in faraway Australia had heard Ferrari's were cool. I played with the kids next door. Their uncle showed up with a Dino Gt4. Two days later, a Sunday, my dream came true. That great Sunday . . . We drove from my suburb of Stanmore to a suburb called Strathfield a distance off 10 kilometres or just over 6 miles. I sat in the back of the Dino. I could hear the engine roar but admit, I was underwhelmed. I thought what's the fuss with this brand. On the Way Back: I did notice the engine getting louder and the speed faster. Way back via Parramatta Rd . A major thoroughfare where the V8 could show its pedigree. Rude Guy in a Muscle Car: - The guy driving started over taking numerous cars. We got beeped at. Whilst most people smiled and gave a thumbs up 👍, we received some harsh words & blatant swearing. Australia 70's Muscle cars: Were mostly called Holden Torana's and SLR's. NOTE - More about these later. A brown Holden SLR showed up next to us. The passenger started yelling out obscenities and I heard the words 'Italian plsdtic poofer machine !". The guy driving us kept his cool and smiled. He said " $100 and I'll race you to Catherine Street." The two racist morons looked at each other. Our driver said, 'sorry you guys can't afford $100. ' He said it deliberately and it worked. They were incensed. It was on. I remember our driver, Jim, saying buckle up boys. He then told me to look alert as he didn't like the look of them or trust them. We raced up Parramatta Rd as we left Lewisham, passed the West Street intersection and headed toward the suburb Leichhardt and the next intersection, Norton Street. The SLR, a block mounted V8 was fast. The 308 less than half its weight but could corner easier. This is where the Ferrari showed its true pedigree. The old myth of the slow 308 was put to bed here. I had noticed that as the Dino's engine heated up we were going faster & faster. Jim was toying with him. Jim warned us. He said strap in boys as I'm going to red line the engine after the 3rd gear. This guy is angry and will try to side swipe us. Long Story Short The Ferrari left the SLR for dead as we had a hot gear box and Jim went up through the gears. We would now easily pull away from the heavy SLR. The road wasn't dead straight and as Parramatta Rd kinked left or right the SLR lost speed dramatically. In contrast Jim would just gear up and down. He finally did this so quickly that the SLR driver was going way too fast for his car's weight and was watching the Ferrari perform the U - turn when he smashed into a series of cars waiting for the lights to change. We sped off the other way. The V8 was roaring and the Dino flying. Again, this was the Seventies. Some muscle cars could possibly keep up with the speed, BUT, the Dino Gt4's versatility and light body made it formidable. For me, a fantastic childhood memory. Ferrari's in Australia were as rare as the proverbial 'hen's teeth.' POSTCRIPT These SLR's are now expensive collectors items with an SLR recently selling for $AU220,00 OR $US150,000. It was a restomod. A genuine SLR sold for $US1 Million earlier this year. It was bought by an American with a thorough knowledge of Aussie Muscke cars. Holden was then owned by US General Motors. It also made the GTR range if cars which my cousins had many. Unfortunately they didn't keep any and are kicking themselves. Depending on age, condition and rust you could earn everything from $US100,000 to over a million.

This will make me unpopular. But the 308GT4 Dino is my favourite Ferrari of all time. I am however biased. My uncle had one when I was a kid and he took me to school at one day and I was the king of the school for the rest of the year. I absolutely love these cars I don’t know what is about them they were the best Ferrari ever but it’s my favourite. Whenever I see one on film or in real life all the hairs on the back of my neck and arms just stand straight up. The passion in this car for me is wonderful. And it was a monster of its day. When you compare it alongside the Ford Escort and the things that were out around about the same timeIt was an absolute monster and a beast of a car. Very heavy very powerful very very solid.

My first Ferrari was a 1975 Chiaro blue/tan 308GT4 with the factory front spoiler, bought it for my 30th birthday. Loved it! Sounded great and still made decent power, later cars were not as fast. Swapped out the Dino wheels for 3 piece Ferrari with slightly wider rubber and the rear sway bar off of a 328. Handled great and no one knew what it was, but when they heard the engine they knew it was something special. Traded it in for a Countach 5000QV, but wished I'd kept it. Thanks for the video, good stuff!

I much prefer these older Ferrari's to any of the new ones. Any Ferrari with flappy paddles doesn't interest me. I'd love to see a review of the beautiful orange Lamborghini Jarama parked in the back. I've always been a big fan of these 308 Dino's because they were bodied by Bertone. I studied cars and car design, as a teen in the 80's and 90's. It's great to see that this Dino is something other than rosso corsa red. I've seen a few of these for sale that are in a sad state. Great content. Thank you.

Very well explained, a credit to you and your father who raised you! You would have to be the only woman on earth that understands these cars like myself and brother who have owned many models and still do since our early 20s, I would like to add to your story that the greatest man on earth second only to Jesus Christ, being Elvis Presley with all his money and fame in 1976 purchased a Black Dino 308 GT4 so all us Italian fans of Elvis here in Australia have a soft spot for Dino 308s epically in Black Tony.

I like that Ferrari very much cause it was the first ferrari which was not designed by pininfarina but by bertone. Usually in the 60ies and 70ies Bertone was the designer from lamborghini. I like the clean style looks fantastic on that car. At Bertone the surface was alwys allowed to work.

I’ve had four 308 GT4, but now have a 1988 Mondial 3.2QV Coupe with ABS. The GT4 is a very nimble good handing car. My first one had the front air-dam which helps prevent lift. Never use 2nd until the oil temperature gauge moves off rest! Also bleed the radiator to take air out, these days people forget to do this! Great review.

Bertone originally designed this car to be the Lamborghini Urraco. But Ferruccio took one look at it and didn't like it. So they started over on a whole new design. Enzo was desperate for a replacement to the 246 but the Pininfarina 308 wasn't ready to go into production yet. So he bought this design as a stop gap and built these.
@timgosling6189
@timgosling6189 Жыл бұрын
Possibly. Gandini actually designed the Urraco first and offered it to Lamborghini in 1968. This became the 1970 show car. In '69 Fiat Dino coupe bodies had started arriving at Maranello for completion. Enzo had decided he needed a 2+2 to compete with the 911and was impressed by the quality of Bertone's work. Thus in 1970 Gandini was asked to produce a design for the 308gt4 based on a stretched 246 chassis. There is some opinion that Bertone was selected also because Enzo believed the 'wedge' look was the coming thing, but I believe that the project was an experiment, a toe in the water, and Ferrari indeed was still in a close relationship with Pininfarina on working up the new Boxer. The key point is that by the time the decision was made on commissioning the gt4 design the Urraco had already been shown in near final form on the Lamborghini stand. Gandini may have had another idea in his back pocket back in 68 but it would likely not have been more than a rough styling concept.

Also the Pininfarina GTB intro was delayed because of quality issues with the fiberglass body. Those issues were never resolved but the GT4 platform continued to be made until 1993 although it got a Pininfarina body and was renamed the Mondial so there definitely was a market for a 2+2 mid engined car back then. Interestingly there aren't any now.

@@pi.actual The Mondial did use a modified version of the gt4 frame, but I think by the late '80s and the introduction of the whole removable rear subframe it had changed quite a lot.

Did Enzo really expect his cars to be V12s? By 1973, he’d built V6 engines designed by his son (Dino), the V8 Dino, straight 8s, and more.

This was originally supposed to be the Lamborghini Urraco. Lamborghini rejected the design, Ferrari picked it up, made some changes, put in its newly developed 3 liter V-8 and there you have it...

So what's the trick to removing a spare tire & wheel -- even a 14-incher -- from its storage area without beating the crap out of the car? A front-tilt hood does *not* make this seem easy. I would assume the correct answer these days is to keep a can of fix-a-flat handy and forget the spare even exists! ;-)

It looks terrible with that federal front bumper and should be removed for European spec. The interior red colour also is a weird red but very striking. However the engine on the drive did not sound very much in tune and was not crisp on throttle from low down as it should be.
