And he is humble too. Many mechanics call themselves technicians, and when they have a workshop with $4,000,000 worth or cars they act like they have royal blood, and come off as sanctimonious pompous blowhards, and oftentimes have little info other than wikipedia stats, plus how great they are, with the emphasis on the latter. This guy reminds me of my last great mechanic who was born in 1910 and died in 1989. Since then I have been through 25 mechanics, one of whom gave back the car with no coolant (hence no overheating shown on coolant gauge, since there was no coolant to gauge), and it burned up the motor in one day. And of course he pretended like he did fill it with coolant and it was just time for that car to die of old age on that day.

Awesome piece. I owned a 456 GTM for 18 months or so 10 years ago and loved it. I had to choose between it and a 550 and though the 550 was fabulous and a more muscular drive, the added practicality and sheer beauty of the 456 swayed me. I quite fancy another if I can find the right one. Edited to add.. and the pop up headlights. I never got sick of playing with those. Plus, it was one of the easiest cars that I've ever driven to have a little slide in... super progressive and very manageable. Brakes were a bit of a worry from high speed, though. They gave me a nervous moment more than once on the autobahn.

What a great summary of the 456. I agree it has an understated elegance that has been missing lately, although the Roma is a return to form. The long intake tracts across the engine were also there to boost torque, and of course now things to improve the torque/power balance across the rpm spectrum are a lot more complex. First came variable tract length and then, from I think the F12 onward, a pair of resonance chambers on the front of the plenums. These help form standing pressure waves in the plenums, again to ensure high pressure arrives at the end of each tract at the right time to help the mixture into the engine. All too clever for me!

Great video. Years ago on my Alfa Romeo Busso V6 3.0 I had the throttle cable adjusted and it dramatically improved the responsiveness on initial acceleration and fully opened.

Came along with Harry’s Espada and definitely here to stay, thank you so much for opening your Classics vault for us! Don’t know if anyone mentioned it before but when I close my eyes sometimes I hear Alan G Partridge talking, such a nice touch.

A youTube channel where the author actually knows what they are talking about - brilliant. Reminds me to lift the bonnet on my V12 and adjust the cable. 168k miles, it will definitely need adjustment :)
