Ferrari And McLaren’s Strength Is Red Bulls Weakness
Charles Leclerc has finally broken the curse and Ferrari now have 2 wins and we have 4 different race winners! Red Bull has an inherent problem that is plaguing the Rb20 and holding back there true pace from race to race. The Ferrari sf24 has proven it can fight red bull and so can McLaren. So is the title battle truly on?

Agree, but it is possible. A good chunk of the tracks require kerb riding, including 4/5 of the upcoming races to various extents. And with Ferrari and Mclaren being within a tenth, those kerbs, tho not to the same extent as monaco, could make all the differnece. And R&D will play a big role. Apparently Ferrari have a relativly large package coming to silverstone

I agree which makes it the more baffling to me that RB is seemingly not considering changing their second driver. I actually think there is a great chance Ferrari or Mclaren can take the WCC. Especially considering the fact that Checo could easily have a couple DNFs along with some 6/7/8th place finishes.

Really accurate report about performance. Myself, I am not getting sucked into an exploded faulty Brembo rotor, a "safety car win", and Monaco's "parade" to sway my bias into it being a now tightly competitive season. Track to track performance is a season long series of compromises, and whichever basic design along with targeted, strategic upgrades navigates those compromises the best SHOULD become Champion. To Me, Monaco didn't really indicate anything except that Fredarri and McLaren can ride the curbs higher and therefore leak more air from Their floors on proper F1 tracks.

I don't know how many times at the beginning of the season we were told that this was going to be the most boring season in history, with one driver winning them all. Well, after only eight races we now look at the scoreboard and we have two contenders, perhaps even three. And there are 16 races left. Personally I think 2024 will go down in history as a grand cru. All the ingredients are there: incessant upgrades, unexpected breakdowns, stunning accidents, medical emergencies, damaging controversies, spectacular transfers, staff drama, and to top it all off a glorious fairy tale. I cannot legitimately ask for more.

The next few races could be telling. Canada has bumps which RB don’t like, unpredictable weather and a long straight so you can overtake. Spain is where McLaren could cook as they were supposed to do last year if they had the upgrades and their tyre wear is solid. As an Engineer, I think the main concerning point regarding RedBull would be its Suspension Geometry, Particularly at the Rear. We know that RedBull and Mclaren both have same suspension yet RedBull is struggling to even touch the kerbs while Mclaren is riding them nicely. RedBull have hugely updated their suspension geometry over the years which aided them in tyre wear and porpoising but this year they might have downgraded it in order to gain some aerodynamics gains. We can see a clear difference between RB19 and RB20 Sidepods with RB20 adopting the "Waterslide" Style shape like AM and Mclaren and Redesigning whole rear Engine cover / Coke Bottle area for it. I think they still are pretty good at conventional circuits but we have to see what they come up with for bumpy tracks next.
@Scronx-mc3uj
@Scronx-mc3uj 4 ай бұрын
they copied the abandonded idea of mercedes w14 with minimilastic sidepods,the engine cover and some similar traits. Mercedes design seemed well on the simulators but was really bad on track and same can be said with rb20. Max has been complaining about loosing the rear with no grip which was the similar problem with the mercedes w14. This rb20 isn't anywhere near stable as the rb19 was and actually has lost much of the stable characteristics. Not to mention that the rest of the field has caught up to redbull too. We had a bad ferrari, a slow mclaren and a broken mercedes concept last year which is not the case this time
@optyfen5276
@optyfen5276 4 ай бұрын
But is it actually a suspension problem or is it an aero problem which therefore compromises the suspension they have to run? With suspension being relatively simple these days I reckon it's a trade off between McLaren being more balanced of a car and the RB being better on tracks they strive which is also the majority of the calendar.
@Scronx-mc3uj
@Scronx-mc3uj 4 ай бұрын
@@optyfen5276 problem with both. The aerodynamic platform of the rb requires to run at low ride height with a very stiff suspension. This makes the car faster in high speed corners but a lot worse with kerbs, bumps and low speed corners

@BrianBoulter-g7w 4 ай бұрын
@@Scronx-mc3uj The current Red Bull sidepods have nothing to do with the Merc zero pod concept… which didn’t have any noticeable aggressive undercut. Mercs problems with those cars were largely suspension related (which you can’t test properly in a windtunnel) and that the zero pod gave them less floor area (which was also structurally weaker)
@optyfen5276
@optyfen5276 4 ай бұрын
@@Scronx-mc3uj Yeah but what you describe is an aero "problem," at least it is on a circuit such as Monaco. And not so much a suspension problem, the suspension in this case is less important and therefore it is the suspension that get's compromised so the aero works. Otherwise they would run soft and have no trouble with kerbs and bumps. Especially if people say that McLaren have the same suspension philosophy as RB it therefore would be very interesting if McLaren is able to make it work with relative easy suspension rules these days and RB not.

It is the dream of 19 drivers to dislodge Max from the top. True, the RB 20 has some inherent weakness that is exposed at certain tracks but I doubt that it is big enough for others to write off Max and his car. Every time he is down, Max has come out fighting. I don't think either Lando or Charles will be able to repeat their P1 finishes in too many races to overtake Max. It has thrown the doors open for a great season of seesawing fortunes but I doubt Max will allow anyone to take his 4th 🏆 away.

The rb20 seems to be a very unstable car. Last years rb19 was stable and had grip. Max can be seen multiple times complaining about loosing the rear end of the car with no grip. Rb took inspiration from mercedes w14 which was really good on simulator but failed to produce results on track and same thing can be seen with rb. Rb doesnt ride well on kerbs and bumpy tracks and has a stiff suspension for that low ride height and that aerodynamic platform. I so badly want to see a competitive grands Prix again. I watched the entire Indy 500 this year and I have to say that these drivers are everything the equal of the F1 grid. The Indy 500 was riveting, down to the last lap with any of 4 - 5 drivers with a solid shot at a win. F1 used to be like this, even in doninant streaks. Yes, even in domminant streaks, we had races, more often than not, where the winner was still decided in the last stint of the race - think here back to the Senna / Prost years, think also Schumi (early) and part of the LH period, I say part, the first 3. Vettel was almost unbeatable, Verstappen also. This kind of domination, as I understand, does not occur in Indy and this is because Indy do not want it, it is bad for the sport !! F1 don't seem to have learnt this !! Part of the problem at present is the cost cap. I think the cost cap, although justified, goes too far , as it stands now, as it is killing innovation - all the cars look almost the same - except fot the ever diminishing colours. Indy 500 - 33 cars each with their own sponsors and colours, 13 teams and even some composite teams. F1 needs to leann some lessons from Indy ...... to be truly the pinacle of the sport.

Great video! How much of a difference do you think Red Bull's reduced Wind tunnel/CFD allowance is making? Could this be a simple answer to explain the performance gap closing after mid season upgrades?

I think Canada, Ferrari will be close to red bull due to the slow t1-3 with many curbs and the high-medium speed corners around the rest of the track, I think Spain McLaren will defo get a double podium and lando or Oscar may genuinely win, last year before upgrades lando was p3 so this year who knows. I think tracks like Silverstone and spa are red bull city due to the lack of curb riding needed unless the Ferrari Silverstone update is strong

Wait....if the Red Bull has an inherent baked in issue with kerbs.....doesn't that spell trouble for them in Montreal which is known to have some of the most severe kerbs in f1? And we know that they no longer have the vast top speed advantage they used to...? Does this suggest we have another "anyone's victory" race to look forward to or am I just dreaming? 😂

The Honda engine has subtly taken another step-up this year. Just look at how good VCARB is compared to the Merc and Ferrari customer teams (especially in qualifying). So Red Bull's straight-line speed should make up for any weakness in the corners. Suzuka is probably the closest track to Montreal, so I reckon RB is favourites. Plus not a lot of tyre deg at Montreal, so Norris is unlikely to pull closer at the end of the race. (unless he goes for a major undercut)

Not only the cars... but the drivers. Mclaren and Ferrari both have very strong 2nd drivers if you can call them that, and Redbull's is quite weak. We aren't even half way thru the season, and already 3 of the 4 Mclaren/Ferrari drivers are ahead of Perez. Pretty sure by the end of the year, all 4 of them will be.

At around 1:40 you talk about having a higher ride height helps in the slower corners. How exactly does a higher ride height help with being better in slower corners? Usually the rule of thumb is as low as possible for maximum downforce and a low center of gravity, no?

Let's be honest, the WCC belongs to Ferrari. In a season of such equality, they and McLaren have something that Red Bull lacks; two drivers. I appreciate Checo, but he can't continue on the team. Personally, I would like to see Yuki in Red Bull, his adaptation could be difficult and raise doubts, but I think he could end up being a more than suitable pilot. As for the WDC, although the points difference is not too much, we should not ignore Max's DNF in Australia. Plus, realistically, it takes more than just a car as fast/slightly faster to beat Max, just look at what happened in 2021. Regarding the cars, as a Red Bull fan I am somewhat disappointed (although it is undeniable that this equality makes everything much more interesting) since, despite the undeniable improvement of McLaren and Ferrari, I think that in Milton Keynes they have dropped the ball massively. They were able to start development of the 2024 car before anyone else, and yet they have created a car that is worse in every way. True, it has improved slow cornering and traction, but kerb/bump riding, the RB19's biggest weakness, is now even worse. It remains competitive in medium, fast corners, straight line speed and aero efficiency, but on certain occasions they are surpassed in some of these aspects. The car overall is still good, but it's no longer great at anything. Furthermore, its tire management is not too good, the front axle is weak, the balance poor, and the operating window, minuscule. I was expecting a car with a smaller overall advantage (3-4 tenths) but more versatile, and none of that. Lately, they are dedicating their FP sessions to making the car drivable instead of seeking performance, and that is hindering them. It's good for the championship, but I hope they soon solve some of their problems and be clearly ahead again (at least 2-3 tenths). I think they'll still be comfortably ahead on normal tracks BTW. Awesome job mate!

Last year the bulls weren't great in Monaco either. McLaren have historically always been good around Monaco. I'd love a fight between RedBull, McLaren and Ferrari for the remainder of the championship. I think Max is still going to make the difference between close running cars.

Have the kerbs at tracks changed from 23 to 24? and will they change any other kerbing at tracks to come in 24? i know it sounds like a conspiracy, but I'd interested to know if kerbs have been changed at tracks to indirectly hinder the performance of the Red Bull so that there will be more competition in F1 and the organizers of the sport can keep it more interesting. It's sounds crazy but when a team is dominating so much, I'm sure they think of subtle ways to narrow competition. I remember in 2021 when they changed the rear floor regulations and it apparently benefited cars with a higher rake and Toto made comments about how it benefitted the Red Bull car back then and it bought Mercedes and Red Bull closer that season, and in the end Red Bull came out on top that season.
