@@barrierodliffe4155 Yeah Mansell would not have had to overtake Berger if he had not spun, but that does not neglect the fact that the overtake by Mansell on Berger is legendary in itself, on the outside of one of the most feared high speed corners back then, and on knackered tyres as well. Yes, I know Prost is a better driver but Mansell had his great moments and also quite a few moments of bad luck.

@@r.dekker858 While I hate to spoil it for Mansell fans, it has been said that Berger felt bad about the way he had got past Mansell and he did not put up much of a fight. I wonder what all the bad luck Mansell had is meant to be, he was lucky to drive for the best teams so often, and I would say Prost had a lot more bad luck than Mansell.

I remember this race very well. Alain Prost had started so far back you’d think he had no chance and then you watched as he progressed through the field. BBC coverage jumped live into the race in the final stages as Prost closed in on the top three if I recall correctly, swiftly dispensing Mansell and then took off after Senna. That pass must’ve been so sweet for him after the shenanigans of 1989. I was dancing out of my seat. IMHO the best ever F1 champion of my day. I never saw Alain put a bad move on anyone, ever.

Yeah, this was one of best Prost victories, if not the best. BUT... you forgot to mention that in this season Prost had a car which was strong enough to fight against Senna throughout to year... and he lost the battle. Go watch Spa, Monza and Estoril and you'll get the point. 91' maybe few people remember but Ferrari wasn't worse than McLaren. It was just another massacre. Then Prost resigned in the second half of the season and ended fired... Senna defeated Prost from 88 to 91, all seasons, but had 89' title took away by Ballestre and poor reliability in his car.

@Crixus Mauperthuis Exactly. Senna has a lot of fans because she was spectacular, but that doesn't mean she was efficient. Saving the distances, the same thing happens with Gilles Villeneuve, although Senna was much superior. But people are left with the spectacular rather than the efficiency. That added to the propaganda of movies like Senna, they make the legend surpass the person and people believe lies that are established as truth.

Prost coming from 13th and overtaking them all including Mansell and Prost made it look so easy, he then set off after Senna and overtook him too to lead, a lead never relinquished, Mansell should have had a safe second place but he spun. Prost was the fastest driver on the track with no drama or exactly how it should be done, Senna wore his tyres out. It just shows that Prost could be very quick and smooth like few other drivers. This was not the only race where Prost was the fastest on the track or where he had to come from behind. What is really impressive is that before the race he said to his team "I can win this race", they thought he was crazy.

Alain Prost. A genius behind the wheel. Super-smooth, super-fast. He could drive a car consistently faster probably better than any other driver of his generation. The only reason he's not placed on the same pedestal as Senna is...he's still alive. Sorry Senna fans. I have total respect for Senna's speed and commitment; and the Brazilian was the ultimate over 1 qualifying lap but... If I you wanted someone to help engineer/set-up the car and bring home more points, more consistently, Prost was the man. It's a shame the 'Senna' movie (good as it was) has coloured a younger generation's view of these two men. I saw them both drive in the flesh and they were BOTH great drivers.

Mateus Hokari the fact is that Senna's block-pass attack was suicide and Prost warn him that he won't let him thru and closed the door. The Balestre's episode show us that Prost could only count on himself and not on his team to get the rules respected. Senna's fans hate Prost for that but none of them hate Senna for what he did a year later in Suzuka..
@knightm27
@knightm27 7 жыл бұрын
On that occasion (I presume you're talking about Suzuka '89) Prost simply decided to 'do a Senna'. Historically, for the good of the team, when Senna had launched his car up the inside Prost had left racing room. Senna's tactic - as it had been since F3 (see the excellent Senna Vs Brundle movie) - was usually to launch his car up the inside and leave it up to the other driver whether they choose to have an accident or not. Prost had, by this moment, said 'no more' of the kowtowing to keep team harmony; the team had already stopped supporting him (see the story about Monza '89) and essentially told Ron Dennis that if Senna used the same tactic again he's not going to yield this time and the door will be slammed firmly closed (as Senna had done many times to many drivers). Prost deliberately DIDN'T go for pole and set his car up for race pace (he was demonstrably (almost 1 second) quicker than Senna in warm up), kept Senna in his dirty air and was planning his strategy for later in the race when Senna launched that famous pass attempt from a long way back. It looked so bungled by Prost as he simply wasn't used to using this kind of strong-arm tactics that Senna usually employed - in fact Keke Rosberg joked about that at the time! Senna was a warrior, Prost an artist. There's two sides to each story so let Prost tell you in his own words: By now McLaren-Honda essentially worked as two different teams, which happened to operate out of the same pit. Once again, the two red and white cars were in front row, both its drivers in defiant mood, Senna knowing he had to win, Prost making it clear he'd be no pushover. "I told both the team and the press, 'There's no way I'm going to open the door to him any more.' We talked very often, you should know, about the first corner, the first lap, and Ron always said the important thing was that we shouldn't hit each other, we should think of the team. Well, as far as I was concerned, Senna thought about himself, and that was it. For example, at the start of the British Grand Prix that year, going into Copse, if I hadn't moved three or four metres out of the way we'd have hit each other, and both McLarens would have been out immediately. That sort of thing had happened too often; I had had enough." "As for the accident between us at the chicane, yes, I know everybody thinks I did it on purpose. What I say is that I did not open the door, and that's it. I didn't want to finish the race like that - I'd led from the start, and I wanted to win it. I had a good car; I'd been very bad in qualifying, compared with Ayrton, and I concentrated entirely on the race. In the warm-up I was nearly a second quicker than him, and for the race itself I was quite confident, even when he started catching me. I didn't want him too close, obviously, but I wanted him close enough that he would hurt his tyres; my plan was then to pus hard over the last ten laps. As it was he tried to pass - and for me the way he did it was impossible, because he was going so much quicker than usual into the braking area." "I couldn't believe he tried it on that lap, because, as we came up to the chicane, he was so far back. When you look in your mirrors, and a guy is 20 metres behind you, it's impossible to judge, and I didn't even realise he was trying to overtake me. But at the same time I thought, 'There's no way I'm going to leave him even a one-metre gap. No way'. I came off the throttle braked - and turned in."

@@barrierodliffe4155 So Prost lead Mansell 9:7 in fastest qualifying laps but because he had the better equipment. I think that's common knowledge today. It also makes sense considering Prost's knowledgeable record of being a 'behind the back' guy. Ask any driver of that period and they will tell you that Mansell had more speed and heart. Again, I think overall Prost had the better package, but also more luck.

For Mexico 1990, Prost decided to prepare his car for the race rather than get the best qualifying result. So he did the qualifying with hard tyres and a half full fuel tank and got only the 13th position on the grid. This strategy payed off for the race as he got the best out of a nicely tuned Ferrari.

McLaren vs. Ferrari - always a classic rivalry. It's sad to see McLaren struggling with their Honda Engines, and Ferrari lacking the poise to finish strongly (with this all-Italian management line up). Alonso would have had at least two more titles driving for Ferrari if the team didn't commit strategic blunders. And if it isn't strategy blunders, it's reliability problems like this year (2017).

That's why Prost is still called "The Teacher" ! He knew how important saving the tyres was ! Senna was probably faster than him but his tyres just couldn't keep the pace.

@Flash224

No one was at fault for the start collision in Singapore. Vettel tried to block off Verstappen and Raikonnen came up with a mega start that Vettel couldn't see. Verstappen then got into a sandwich and the rest was just bad luck. To blame anyone for that isn't really fair.

i was hoping to see the full battle for the 2nd place... Mansell gave Berger so much ferrari RED in his mirrors he left the space going into the last lap. and best with the commentary from the BBC and Murray Walker. if it isn't exciting enough, listen to Murray talk about it.
