Paddle shifters clicked with me when I spent a day at the Jonathan Palmer motorsport day. Quite a few of the track cars had paddle shifters and on track they worked so well and with my years of motorbike experience I took to the sequential nature immediately. A day driving Radicals also showed how good they can be when pressing on

Does anyone else think it's funny how the term 'flappy paddles' caught on so well?
@pistonburner64483 жыл бұрын
More like tragic. None of the SHIFT PADDLES I've used have ever been flappy. If they'd be flappy then they'd be impossible to operate or something would be broken. That word describes them so poorly overall, I've never thought of my shift work or the functioning of an electro-hydraulically or electrically (?) actuated manual gearbox to be anything like "flappy". They are shift paddles. And the gearbox system is semi-automatic, or automated manual, or nowadays double clutch. Could be actuated by buttons, and most non-gearheads don't even shift themselves but just leave in on automatic, so the paddles themselves don't describe the gearbox itself.
@DontPanicDear3 жыл бұрын
@@pistonburner6448 I’m fine with it, as it’s just light hearted vernacular 🤓 There are loads of examples like this though….. “Driving Stick” always makes me wince by the same measure. It’s a manual gear lever, and a manual gearbox. Nobody is driving stick 🙄

I'm a manual guy thru and thru. I take pride in having earned my license in a manual car. Something of a rarity even in 1989 North America. If you want the engagement of playing with your drivetrain and engine get a manual. If you care most of all about getting your car to perfectly enter and exit the corner it is so much more fun to drive a paddle shift for all the reasons Henry mentioned. For how fast even slower cars are a manual is simply far too slow. The ability to do a flurry of downshifts while left foot braking and with the car loaded perfectly entering a corner is a conpeltey unique and incredible experience. Also with modern manuals stupid long gears it is more rewarding to accelerate with tightly spaced automatic gears.

2:55 That's so true... Worrying about 💰 shifting your car, in an attempt to get more engine breaking, is very prevalent with a manual (mainly due to when you have the time to accomplish the downshift). That's not saying it's better, but some times an automatic just fit certain situations better
@paulredding58643 жыл бұрын
Totally. Been saying the same for years, who needs a gear lever. The 2003 RS6 I had, with the stick in manual it would hold the gears until you changed them on the paddles, brilliant for entering corners with balance
