He had not an university degree so, in a way, I see what you mean. But honestly, I don´t find it so amazing as we, in the South Europe, have "similar" languages so, "if you use your brain for a little", you can understand what they mean. Remember that the Roman Empire too over all South Europe and left a lot here, being language proximity, one of them. We also deal with our "neighbours" so, we have to do it by force, if you want. Most modern people here, speak several languages. 3rd point: he was of old age by then and he had dealt with the French for a very long time by then: racing and business. Personally, I don´t speak Italian very well or very much but I understand it pretty well, as a simple example. Cheers from Portugal.

@ As a Scandinavian I should not be surprised as we understand our neighbours most of the time. But I have always understood the differences between the Roman languages to be bigger than the difference between, say, Danish and Norwegian, or Norwegian and Swedish. To my ears French and Italian sounds quite different to each other even though I know they both are rooted in Latin.

In the 50th Zagato built two Spider on the chassis of the 1900. One is in one hand since nearly 50 years the second disappeared completely. Three recreations are known of which I own one. In fact it seems the only one wich is religable and regularly driven (kzbin.info/www/bejne/kGOYppKVarukpLMsi=vpl3UeMgiLO7iQUW) after we restaurated the complete technique of the vehicle. The paint was not touched so it has a very charming patina. The second of this kind is offered in Belgium as a restaurations object for 195.000,- The third one known is in Germany, concour condition but with technical problems and was sold for 295.000,- about five years ago.
