This type of machining seems lost in the automotive world, but is alive and well in the motorcycle world. I have a 70s bridgeport and a lathe and do much of the same work for myself as a hobby. I mostly work on older air cooled motorcycles that do not have the amazing aftermarket support that cars have. I make my own guides, seats, bearing adapters, re shaping ports, line bore crank bearing journals, and more to make old engines run better than new. In some cases more than doubling the power output these machines originally had. I love seeing the tooling you use and seeing much of techniques I use being used in your shop as well as some new tricks I am learning from watching you.

Josh, newbie sub here, your 8100 content got my attention, Love it bro! I’m an older dude 56 years young, brought up with the mark IV BBC, my fave engine, I knew a loooong time ago the short comings with the long/short intake port plus the “missing” head bolts, chalk that up to the pencil pushers back in the day. The 8100 is VERY similar to the mark III that never made it off the drawing board . Symmetrical intake/ exhaust and a beautiful head bolt pattern. This is the way the big chevy was supposed to be! Just bought one for 200 bucks ! Take that LS boy! You might be getting some biz from me josh !

If your a hobbyist then your right up my alley, I loved when this old tony would post up! 😂 and for the collet bit, he kinda proved that some are junk, just cause it’s suppose to be better it’s not always the case. It’s a get what you paid for type of thing I think.

As a fellow Josh that’s also a car enthusiast, I need to say you are living my best life. Teach me your ways! I’m about to pick up my first mill (had a big old lathe for a while) but had no idea I could do my own engine work. This changes everything! Question about surface finish for MLS or similar gaskets, what process/tooling are required to achieve 30 Ra? Best I would think you could do is massive fly cutter with a real slow feed but have never had tools to measure surface roughness.
@EngineRehab
@EngineRehab Жыл бұрын
The average Josh is still a god among men. This is easily done in a milling machine. You need a large flycutter, big flycutter is a brand that I recommend to people. 30ra is easily achievable. The stuff I produce generally is a 12-18 RA. I can get it to single digits if I run it slow enough and the material is nice. 30 is easy.

It’s not the machine that makes a quality job, it’s the person running it. A knowledgeable person can make do with simple tools, like your speciality socket for the valve guides.

0:57 'Yeah yeah but but have you blued up ya mill and rubbed it on a surface plate tho! Didnt think so!' 😅 13:30 Thats some understanding there, Ive noticed the same scraping machine tools. Things move around when stress goes into or out of a component, order of operations is super important when going for quality. Cheers D

Love the rick and morty morty socks followed by multiple bubble level references "true level morty?" I just had to pull my 8.1l heads over broken exhaust manifold studs. While in there noticed carbon buildup so bad a few looked to have been dipped in rtv lol. Brass brushed the combustion chamber face, once they where out of the head, they look new on that face. My question is, can the coating on the back of the valve handle the brass wheel as well? Planing to re hone the valve seat with compound after shining/polishing...just don't want to chew up valves from removing the coating..you sound experienced enough to know if brush wheels remove the valve coating..new valves are only like 200 or 500 for titanium in some places so if their toast so be it.. but they cleaned up well and I'd like to reuse them.

Lost a TCM25 in a divorce mess . now 20+yrs later , have a LOT of NEWAY stuff and a walker/turner drill press that work well enuff for antiques . and i had recommended ; radial arm drill press let alone overhead mill/bridgeport , for cold cast repair .... shorten story , imho and experience from others ; anyone griping about mill vs seat/guide machine is ignorant or narcissist & ignorant . wish i had mill OR radial arm drill press . now funny thing , i do believe that seat pocket cutter and guide trimmer for seals , many were built for a HAND DRILL . so many arguements moot . enjoy bud . even a 62 , love learning . BTW , how are the inlaws ???😮😅😊

For the kind of money that Raylar charges for these cylinder heads... you shouldn't be able to find a single microscopic flaw on any of them. What a disappointment those heads are. It's too bad the foundry cant sell bare castings for a competent machinist to build on.

how does that old saying go "those that say you can't are usually in the way of those doing it" or something like that. that being said i just want to comment on your constantly putting every other persons work you see down while blowing your horn, you do good work but you should work on humility cause dude you're not all that none of us are, and one more thing that Arca milling machind IS NOT a Bridgeport it's about half the price of a bridgeport I used to work in a machine shop where we had genuine bridgeport's it wasn't a engine machine shop we made other things we used from shim stock all the way to 5" thick steel we made our own dies and repaired our own stuff we had 1 old bridgeport like the machine you have the rest were cnc machines. we had a cnc punch that could do amazing things. and of course we had shears and brake presses tubing benders for with dies for round and square stock we could make repair or do anything we just didn't concentrate on engines, but we could work on our own stuff off the clock. I really enjoy your content just not all the bragging

Definitely never talked down on anyone. And calling any knee mill a bridgeport is pretty common. It’s like calling containers tupperware.

Your holes won’t be drilled on the correct angle with your ram turned to any degree other than perfectly perpendicular to the X axis. It will be close enough for what your doing, but if your counting on them to be on the exact angle you need to indicate your ram parallel to the Y axis. And I know that there will be a lot of machinists out there that will disagree with me. But stop and think about it before starting to run your mouth about how wrong you think I am.
@EngineRehab
@EngineRehab Жыл бұрын
Wait, are we saying that things need to be drilled straight in order to work? That sounds pretty basic!
