Drouin's injury is really the turning point if we look at the results: He has been placed on IR on November 16th, they were 11-5-3 at the time. Immediately after his injury, they went on an 8 game losing streak and are 7-14-4 without him. I know there are other factors, but I think it shows Drouin is probably more important to the habs than people think.

With the intensity he played in games this year he definitely was a huge part of that team. When your most skilled guy is working the hardest (like drouin did). They said gallagher is the pulse of that team, might have been right last year not this year hahah it was definitely drouin

Or maybe the law of averages are at work...the more they play, the more they play like what they truly are which is a bottom 10 team. They played out of their minds last season and still didn't make the playoffs. If Drouin is what your success hinges on, you were doomed from the get go

@Jessie I am a Habs fan, the media and the fans overrate the core of the Habs to the extreme. Last year they played as well as they ever were going to with those core players and still missed out on the playoffs. There are 31 teams, relative to other teams if my core guys are Gallagher, Domi, Webber and Price, I will likely finish as a bottom 7 team. They just lack talent. Its that simple

As much as I love to see the Habs struggle, I kinda feel sorry for Price. Year after year, all the TV personalities can’t talk about him without saying “best goalie on the planet” “future hall of famer” but is he? What has he done? Does one good season give someone these titles? Only one 40+ win season while playing in an era that gives goalies wins for shootouts. Never made it past the second round of the playoffs. People will say “ya but he won a gold medal!” So CANADA, the deepest talent pool of hockey players in the world and favourites wouldn’t have won without him? He’s the reason they won? “Ya but he won the Hart trophy” There have been goalies that have had better seasons that didn’t get the Hart trophy! “Ya but it’s the team in front of him” Elite goalies of his status are able to take mediocre teams and make them contenders, make them go on magical runs consistently! Put him on any small market team with the exact same career and I ask, would we have the same conversations about him, would he be “the greatest goalie on the planet!!” and “future hall of famer!!!”?

I'm a Blue Jackets fan and season ticket holder. I watched Bobrovsky's act for seven years. He runs hot and cold. When he's on, he's great, when he's off he's bad and he sulks if he's criticized. The Jackets have been fine without him. Ferraro is right when he says Florida dropped the ball when they gave him 10 million a year through age 37. They had a "meet and greet" for Bobrovsky down in Florida when he first signed. About 50 people showed up. The fact that the fan base was underwhelmed by his signing was the first sign of trouble in my estimation.

As a goalie I'll say I get too much credit for low GA outings and often too much blame for letting in 5+. The stats are only meaningful over a long sample size and taken in context of team defence and coaching style. Too often a gosling makes a pure luck save and gets heaps of praise meanwhile nobody notices the 10 solid positional/play reading saves. Or the box-out work and rebound clearing/ stick checking abilities of the defence goes under the radar.

He did it for a couple of seasons circa 2014-16 but it’s simply unreasonable to expect one man to perennially carry a franchise. Ffs they haven’t had a decent, reliable backup in years and he’s had to play multiple back to backs. Try actually watching the games every now and then and you’ll see his mechanics and technique are fine, he’s just overtaxed.

That is a great point that Ferraro makes, that the NHL has done everything it can to minimize the effect of a great goalie and Patrick Roy revolutionized the position to the butterfly style in the 80-90s. Even back then, Roy's teams had great forwards (for example, Sakic & Forsberg plus high-quality defense like Foote & Blake). It used to be that you build from the back, starting with the goalie and defense -- they are on the ice more than the others. You still have to do that, but the Habs have gone without any game-changing forward since Kovalev. Centers have become more and more important, for sure. Maybe some of the young ones -- Kotkaniemi, Suzuki & Poehling -- will grow into that role, but a lot of the time the true greats start off great (by any standard) as rookies -- M Lemieux, Crosby, Gretzky, etc. It's too bad, I really like some of the hard working Habs forecheckers like Thompson, Cousins, Gallagher, and Armia. But you really need a game-changer or two up there too.

I agree with Ferraro. From 1990 to the 2005 lost season, you almost needed a Vezina goalie to win a Cup. Brodeur, Hasek, Belfour, Roy. I’d say Mike Vernon was the worst of the bunch but he was still an All-Star. Now, look at since the lockout. Lundqvist, Price, Rinne, Bobrovsky, Luongo have combined for 0. Instead, rookies like Cam Ward, Antti Niemi and Jordan Binnington have won. They’re cheaper options that in today’s game allow teams to put their cap into the rest of the team. All goalies need to do is make all the routine saves. The advantage of having a Vezina supposed to a league average goalie is drastically smaller than it once was.

It doesn't matter whether the goalie position is "dominant" or not. What matters is how many more saves a goalie makes compared to the other goalies in the league. In a league where teams score on average 5.00 goals per game, a goalie with a 4.00 goals against average is just as valuable as a goalie with a 1.60 GAA in a league where the average scoring is 2.00 per game. In the 1980s, Grant Fuhr could "steal" a game for the Oilers by making 2 spectacular saves while letting in 4 goals - because the opposing goalie couldn't make those same 2 spectacular saves against the Oilers, who would pot 5 or 6 goals and win. Fuhr's 2 extra saves per game contributed as much to the win as Gretzky's 2 extra goals. A good GM looks at the analytics. And none of this even matters when it gets right down to it, because salaries are based on supply and demand. If there is a glut of superb goalies wasting away in the minors, or in the KHL, teams will bring those goalies up and pay them less than the over-priced veterans for equal results. Whether the top-paying position in the league is the goalie, or the centre, or the defenseman, or the pure goal-scorer, depends on which of these is the most scarce in the pool of talent available. An excellent checker can be more valuable than a good goal-scorer: the plus/minus statistic is what really matters. It is said that a 50-goal scorer for Lou Lamarello was someone who scored 20 and prevented 30 over the course of the season.... How many times does the Stanley Cup go to the team with the best grinders rather than the best scorers?

I coulda sworn the Habs were neck-&-neck with the Leafs in the standings at the Christmas break. And now I look and see the Habs have dropped 10 pts behind the Leafs and 7 pts back in the playoff race and have fallen from 2nd place in the Atlantic all the way down to 6th. If Carey Price were still playing like the so-called "Best goalie in the world" as people have constantly claimed millions of times over & over, then the Habs might still have a chance to rebound. But he's not. And neither are any of their back-up goalies. So I guess the Leafs aren't the only team that's had issues concerning their back-up netminding either. In any event....the Habs previously lost 8 in a row and now they've dropped 7 straight. You put two lengthy losing streak like that so close together in the same season.....can't say you're going to rebound from that pretty quickly. And now with Tampa having practically rocketed up the standings, you once again have Tampa, Boston, and the Leafs in the Top 3 in the Atlantic. The Panthers have a fighting chance to sneak their way in too. So this doesn't leave much room for the Habs to make any push in the standings given the circumstances.

What they need to do is get lucky and to get lucky you need to take a chance on somebody. Look at what Yzerman did with the Fabbri for De La Rose trade. So glad to hear that segment, i've been assassinated on social media because i was saying Brgvin was a bad manager dealing the contract of Price & that Price was weak mentally and that we had to pamper him so many years for one very good year. Also that Bettman want more goals, that why you don't put your $ on a goalie, you can replace a goalie but not your capspace.🥅🔟5️⃣💲🚫❌🚫...BTW, Miller & Ferraro the best 1,2 to describe a hockey game.

Vancouver's gonna have a hard time keeping Markstrom if he wants to go over $7 million a season and his negotiations will certainly start higher. Even if he gets Hellebyuck numbers in the $6-6.5 range the Canucks will still have to give up someone like Baertschi, Roussel, Myers or Beagle for draft picks to stay under the cap. That Luongo contract at $3 million a season is still biting Vancity in the ass until 2021-22.

Why does he have to face so many break always and 2 on 1s? Sometimes you see more than 1 player behind their defence. It is more of a defence problem.

There's so many good young goalies sitting on the bench because other goalies have huge 7-8 year contracts. No one in the NHL should be signed over 5 years, except maybe your mcdavid, crosby, datsyuk, ovi, mckinnons.

The defence is horrendous. How many times are opposing players wide open in front of the net. Yes Price is not playing good. We have heard this now for at least a couple of seasons. The backups are no better. Montreal needs at least 2 stay at home defenseman. Do those guys exist anymore, I do not know.
@jackjon77634 жыл бұрын
The best goalies seem to be young guys. Once they have been in the league a couple years every team knows how to score on them. Murray is a pretty good example of it. He has insane hot streaks and then gets beat short side 3-4 times a night.

Yes goaltending is a less dominant position than it used to be but Carey Price has already proven that he can play like a Hart trophy finalist with the smaller gear. At this point he is given a long leash in the hopes that he will eventually return to his former form. As far as goaltending dominance goes guys like Hasek, Roy, Giguere used to be able to carry teams over long periods of time i. e. seasons or playoffs. It’s harder to be dominant consistently now so goaltending is down to stealing games other than the rare occurrences of Fleury’s playoff run with Vegas or Price’s Hart trophy season.

I knew Montreal wasn't a great team before the season started. Just look at the best forwards they have! Their top guys are like 2nd or 3rd liners on a dangerous offensive team. And they don't play well enough defensively to deal with that. I mean look at who they brought in, Kovalchuk. Lol. A team with lots of talent could bring somebody up from the minors and move people up the lineup to fill the holes. The habs don't have enough

I understand he doesnt have much of a team infront of him and good for him to get the money he did but on the flip side montreal is not gonna win anytime soon so having carey price at that price is dumb. The leafs have alot of money on there top end and when anderson and rielly need contracts there going to have a really huge decision to make. Thats just the way it goes. Finding great scouts and signing entry level contracts that can contribute is key.

@@ugna2773 but when you dont have anyone else. You have to pay more for players, and when they signed the contract he was in Prime. @ugna27734 жыл бұрын
@@williamconstant3910 im not arguing that Carey price isnt good. Im arguing that its infact montreals fault for wasting his prime yrs and now there gonna be paying him big money for a team that cant play infront of him. Every yr Price is on a decline. Anderson arguably is the best goalie in the league right now and his contract is up soon. If i were the leafs i would be telling my scouts to look for the next best goalie because Anderson is going to want big money. And he probably isnt going to preform as much as the contract is going to pay because he s going to depreciate in his later yrs. Montreal needs to build a team from scratch to keep everyone in sync with contracts. Ofcourse id keep a few veterens but thats my opinion

It's funny as soon as Price starts to lose a few games, everyone's talking about how the position isn't as strong as it was, and shouldn't command that much money, no one says shit when he's winning. Look at the team he's playing in front of, if he went to another team, i bet he would be the same old Price.
