I'll never understand why American and Canadian ferries never adopted the Internal ramp configuration that others around the world have, no need for the installation of those huge land mounted concrete ones to access the upper car deck in my view great vid as always!

The double ramp systems we have here in BC significantly reduce the turn around time for our ferries, roll on/roll off in its literal form. Some of our smaller vessels that go between the small islands do have “European style” garage decks, and the turn around time for them drastically increases. Internal ramps unfortunately just wouldn’t make sense for BC Ferries. With that being said. These old Cowichan Class vessels do have them. On each side of the upper car deck, there are ramps that can be lowered to access each fixed gallery deck. This was due to the fact that some terminals hadn’t yet been upgraded to the double ramp system when the first two C-Class vessels were launched in 1976. The two C II’s launched in 1981 (Oak Bay and Surrey) also got these ramps as backups incase they were forced to use a single ramp (an example being Langdale Terminal’s berth 2 if berth 1 is inoperable).

CN used to have a Vancouver to Victoria ferry service where their ferry had the internal ramps, the loss of vehicle capacity to the internal ramping made the route unprofitable. Since then the external ramps leaving space for more capacity on board has been the choice. I was born in Vancouver, grew up in the lower mainland and actually remember using the CN service once before it got shut down.

This observation/statement is correct. As a European (and captain on European ferries for many years), I can confirm that loading and unloading with internal ramps takes considerably longer. Up and down takes time; on routes in Europe that need to be very efficient (such as Puttgarden-Roedby, Germany-Denmark) the systems are the same as in Tsawwassen, Swartz Bay and other Canadian locations.

Nice to hear about your memories of the CN service and the reasoning behind the external ramp design choices! Amazing that you got to experience that route firsthand before it ended-definitely a unique piece of ferry history in the area. Thanks for sharing!

Why are some faces blurred out & some not?
@JustFerriesOfficial
@JustFerriesOfficial 2 ай бұрын
Why do you want to know that? Can you be seen in a picture? If so, see the end of my text. It's quite simple, some shots were taken with a camera that was not obviously visible to everyone. The scenes where it wasn't blurred, the camera was clearly visible and sometimes people were walking into the camera path even they saw it. In this case, I don't make it unrecognizable. As a rule, I always try to make clearly recognizable faces of children unrecognizable. And then there are two different methods to make them unrecognizable. In one, which is unfortunately very expensive (pay per Megabyte), everything is made (automatically) unrecognizable, in the other, which is cheaper, it has to be done manually. All in all, a lot of effort. if you have seen yourself and are unhappy with it, then let me know and I will make it unrecognizable for you.
