I think Zaouli is the most impressive dance in the world and one of the most complex ones too because the dancer actually sets the pace of the musicians and not the other way
@martinwinther6013 Жыл бұрын
Ive heard this several times before, but when you start to recognise the beats then it kinda falls apart. Not less impressive in any way. But it is what it is. If you know the track then youre not in control.. You just respond

@@martinwinther6013 You're right, I love the communication between the dancer and musician and how they just react to each other, the hand signals work very well too

@@pepemapache It is the core of REAL music and REAL dance. The interaction. You let the rythm take over. And nomatter where it comes from and where it goes to(is it the music that run the dance, or dance that run the music) - Then its just one of the most impressive styles around. Its up there with jitterbug, breakdance, ballet and that cossack soldiers dance. Jawdropping skills..

The dancing is awesome but let's give some love for the musicians!
@alexanderSydneyOz4 жыл бұрын
Very true. If you focus on the music, particularly the percussive part of it, and the leg movements, they are very closely connected. I assume the musicians are taking their lead from the dancer, but the reaction time to change their playing to match, is just about zero. I guess they are following well established patterns, and it isn't quite Beethoven's 5th, but even so....
@otalaedwin4 жыл бұрын
@@alexanderSydneyOz Yeah, like in most Afrian Dances there is a solid base of percusive patterns and moves that go along and are shared my most dancers/musicians then they take that base and are able to switch it up on the fly because they all know it aswell as special patterns only a group of musicans and a dancer know. These sort of masked dances are very endemic of central and western Africa with each region having it's own twist. The Ivoirian Gouro Might be the most technically impressive though. But if you're interested here is the version from my country, Gabon kzbin.info/www/bejne/pGLOmWhmZ9h6rqM&ab_channel=MADARAKYUBI Very close to what you would see in Cameroon, Congo or Angola (obviously, as they're basically the same ethnic groups as us) These things used to scare the shit our of me and they'd sometimes beat up nosy teens haha

This exact dance may be from the 50s but the tradition has ancient roots. Many ethnic groups and tribes throughout the sub Tropical and Savanna regions of Africa from Senegambia all the way to Zimbabwe, have similar 'masquerades' and dances. They are tied to ancient African spirituality, cults and secret societies.

The dancers are able to predict the music and move accordingly without a belief that the drummer could mess up. That shows how much they work together! Question: What are they celebrating?
