Depending on the application, a more compatible hole to the screw size would provide a better solution, or simply adding a couple washers on each side to give greater holding power.

For this case, your wobbly bolt would have been fine if you'd used the correct tap size twist drill to make the hole. You hole was oversize, so your tap barely made threads and the threads didn't reach to near the bottom of the thread groove on the bolt. Proof: same tap in the slightly smaller hole gave a tight bolt.

They sell drills that use fricton to drill holes in tubing and sheet metal. There is also a product called "nutsert" that is basically a rivet with threads. The inserts come in many thread sizes.

This is bunk....you can't drill thick steel using the ceramic bit of a spark plug in a drill press. Also, if you tap a hole correctly the bolt put in it won't wobble about.

That box section is Steel not Iron good luck doing this in Iron. Also using the correct size tapping drill would help.

Ohhhh I see .. . It doesn't cut the metal away like a drill bit. . it melts it creating a much bigger flange for the thread so a more secure fit with the bolt . Like the same as a captive nut

Есть клепки уже с резьбой , если такую хрень собрался делать , то позаботится об этом и приобрести ,а если это одиночная нужда , то приварить гайку будет быстрее и проще.

Есть термосверло как раз для таких случаев. Гайку не приварить в скрытые полости а заклепочник не у всех есть.

You can also just make a small hole by using a nail and hammer and then use a self drilling metal screw that is designed specifically for use with holes made in such way.

I guess airplanes are set the same way. There is a dummy spark plug tool used on piston airplane engines that hits the piston, preventing full rotation. You hand a protractor on the propeller and see where the engine stops, set the protrator indicator, the rotate the engine in the opposite direction. TDC is the number of degrees split in half. You set the magneto timing accordingly.

You might have done considerably better if you setup to drill and tap your hole using your drill press. A hand drill is likely to leave an over sized hole. The would have worked better if you started it in the drill chuck on your drill press.

One of the biggest mistakes I see when people drill holes for tapping they use the wrong size drill. Often a letter or number drill is needed. Your right about a hand drill and if the metal is thin twist drills don’t create a round hole.
