Picked this up locally for cheap. Watch as we give it a check out to see if there is any life left in it. We were surprised by what we found.

SO funny... when your son said, 'I think have some in stock', regarding the sheet metal cover for the cylinder head. Must have got that from grandpa. :)

Seen this happen many times. Its from running hot, valve seat pops out and rattles around making that worn area you saw. I think that electric motor idea might be cool to see if you go that direction. Also you can adapt almost any engine into this tractor pretty easy.

I'm no expert on these things but I have heard that the exhaust valve seats have been known to pop out of the aluminum block. Maybe that happened here and what you are seeing is the worn area where the dislodged seat was being slammed against the block every time the valve closed. Bet a competent welder could build the worn area of the block back up and you could re-machine the pocket for the valve seat!
