I always chuckle when I think that the Mike of even five years ago would be aghast at what he has become. I doubt that if you told him he'd be streaming JRPGs and voice acting all the lines (really well even!) he'd think there was any chance in hell that would happen.

In the original, if you had multiple characters attack the same target, and that target died before everyone took their turn, their attack would just miss and be a wasted turn essentially. It was really brutal

That run back to the town after getting out of the Marsh cave barely alive is what made these old school games better. Limiting your resources and forcing you to plan ahead made it a survival game with real RPG elements.

When Preach started with the default party, I was basically Walter White screaming in the car for him to get a Monk. Holy moly they outclass everything in the remaster. Also that damn poison cave drove me nuts when I played it last year, glad to see I'm not alone.

I played the shit out of this game at 8 years old lol. The game came with a huge world map that I hung in my room! Nintendo power had a semi-walk through for it too!

Woah you’re doing this? I played the NES original when I was in kindergarten. And I’ve beaten this game 20 times since then for some reason. I don’t know why but I love this game. Maybe it’s just the nostalgia speaking.

No Red Mage? Absolute crime. Amazing the opening text from 1987 is so much better than what they turned it into... And for a pixel remaster it looks, a bit worse. All that said, at least now he can spend months reading the 8-bit Theatre comic and find it more amusing with context. Level 3 and complaining about how bad the Black mage is. Oh for the future revelation that it's absolute trash in FF1.

BLM in FF1PR is amazing due to temper and saber actually working (and they stack), and magic actually getting a benefit from the int stat, so their spells are now MUCH stronger at high levels. This also means that Red Mage is actually worse than WHM/BLM as they originally intended, and is more of a jack of all trades master of none instead of a perfect all-rounder like in the NES version. In fact, the only bug remaining from the original is the increased critical hit rate.

Preach, I love the franchise, but the first two are ruff. We get some good introductions to characters that will reappear in this one, and some core job classes. The 2nd one is where FF really starts to get into the Story, but the gameplay mechanics are kinda bad haha. (story good though, can't lie) I'm excited for this haha.

3 and 5 are going to be BRUTAL aren't they?

3 and 5 have the job system so the difficulty is screwed in particular builds. Some builds suffer through the games and some just clown on everything 😂. 3 has a brutal early game and 3 final dungeons. 5 has a rough 2 final dungeons.

Honestly pixel remasters are fine on difficulty, very easy compared to the originals (you can almost not grind at all and reach the end).

5 isn't that brutal unless you're VERY new to FF games and don't leverage the advantages the game gives you. I've beaten 5 by never using the job system and leaving everyone as freelancers for the entire game and it taught me how good some of the equipment in the game can be, like how whips paralyze enemies, there are instant-death axes in world 1, rod breaking, and swapping protective equipment for elemental resistances.
