It is painful. Some of the reason why the system is ultimately bad. It doesn't do a good job of telling you about the refine abilities.

FF 8 was my very first part of the series and to this day my favorite. I think the junction system is kinda difficult at first but once you get the hang of it you can deeply customize and strategize for fights and your team in general. Also loved the cheesy story a lot.

Same here. It has some of my favorite video game characters of all time. Same goes for the soundtrack. One of the best ever made. I never had any issues with the junction system. I actually found it to be really straight forward. You can attach magic to stats to strengthen them. Some magic works better for certain stats. That's basically it besides equipping abilities and choosing new ones to learn with your GF's.

Preach just running the training area a bit too early and then getting stomped by a T-Rexaur that's harder than the first boss because it's HP is over 10k.

I think everyone gets stomped by that their first trip into the training area lol. I was thinking it has about 30k but I could be confusing it with the one in the Estersand in XII. Edit: I wish I could see the chat during that encounter lol

Oh and by the way, the "card" command by Quetzacoatl isn't for playing cards, it's for turning enemies into magic with GF abilities.

To be exact, it turns enemies into cards. It's another GF ability that can transmute cards into magic, and other ones for transmuting items into different magic.

I know FF VIII gets a bad reputation, but especially Disc 1 I really love. Also, I love the tinkering with the junction system, it's so deeply integrated with the triple triad card game and a great power boost if you know your way around it. But I can get it why most people aren't very fond of the system, too(it actively discourages using spells). Still, I think it's really cool hunting for cards and making those into spells and powering up your characters that way, much more involved than "grind here for 1 hour and you'll be strong". Also, for its time the cutscenes blew me away, though the ingame graphics are really not very good and borderline ridiculous(although fixed in remaster I guess).

Final Fantasy 8 is the dumbest of the entire series...and I love it for it. I can't help it. It was my first entry into the series and everyone has a soft spot for their first Final Fantasy. That being said, yeah, it's totally dumb. The Junction System is one of the most obtuse systems in the entire game, and once you learn it's intricacies, is one of the most overpowered. The Weapon Upgrade system is equally overpowered and dumb because you can craft weapons that you shouldn't even know about until MUCH later in the game. And when one of the weapons gives you access to the second best limit break in the game...the game can be broken forever on the first disk. The Limit Break system is so ridiculous and abusable. Aura is just stupid because of it. You can see why they only used this system of limits once before switching back to a bar you filled. Magic is completely pointless because the best spells in the game are those that you want to Junction to your stats, and it's this weird push-pull gimmick of sacrificing your stats just to cast flashy spells when basic bitch attacks are way better (outside of certain limit breaks). The plot...dumb and contrived. The love story itself is handled REALLY well, but the villain's main goal is just weird. As is the main cast's...past. It DID give us Triple Triad though! And I have a nearly complete collection of cards in FF14 because of it. There's so much to love though. The Dollet intro cutscene and music that follows is one of the most masterful sequences in the game. The entire soundtrack itself is, as always for Uematsu's work, spot on. And the visuals were a huge step up from VII at the time. I love this stupid game. Please send help.

I am happy to see, I am not the only one!! I have gotten sh#t all my life because FF8, not only is my fav FF game, but my #1 game of all time. I LOVED the story. But, I was 20 at the time, so I guess nostalgia plays a big part.

By the way, as a piece of advice, early on GF summons are pretty OP so there really is no point in drawing weak spells like thunder or fire, it's just a waste of time and I certainly wouldn't do it. There are some spells worth getting(quake, aero, tornado etc) which you can later grind with GF abilities really quickly to max stocks. Actually draw spamming you should practically never be doing, but I guess you can't know that.

I've beaten 8 of the main Final Fantasy games (6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13 & 13-2) and this one is in my top 3. It's an incredible game.

If you didn't enjoy FF7 that's fine but don't try and attribute others love of the game as nostalgia. It's a highly regarded and loved game because it WAS an amazing game.

I mean, it's highly regarded for the time it came out because it was a lot of people's first Final Fantasy. The characters are hardly memorable and Sephiroth is a pretty one-note villain. It's just simply the FF game that casual fans first heard about. The game isn't bad by any stretch, but there is a LOT of nostalgia backing FF7. I say that as someone in their 30's who played it on release. In terms of standalone quality, it's hard to say that it rates higher than the middle of the pack for FF games.
