FF8 Selphie Tilmitt, a potential Sorceress? | Final Fantasy VIII Story Theory

So straight up, this is gonna be a nutty ff8 story theory & lore dive excuse, questioning if the energetic Selphie Tilmitt could be... a final fantasy viii sorceress!? This isnt some Rinoa is Ultimecia or Selphie is Rinoa, or Selphie is a pineapple explained video :P. Just a mash of various bits of scene dialogues, her diaries, gameplay mechanics, limit breaks & something about the Leviathan GF summon I'm not sure about. ENJOY! FFVIII remake or port square enix now plz!

A few years ago, me and a very close friend replayed FF8 together for the gazzilionth time or so. The perfect end of the playthrough came when we attempted Omega Weapon and the very first limit break that showed up for Selphie, was "The End". It was also the first time we ever got it to show up! We couldn't believe it and is still something that we talk about. Thank you for a great video dude. Learned some stuff I didn't know before!

Yeah, maybe focus on Squall and Rinoa's child trying to live up to their parents' reputation. You know, being the offspring of a Legendary SeeD and who is, probably, the most powerful sorceress in their world. I think it could make for an interesting story. But yeah, a remake could potentially ruin it. While a sequel risks doing so as well, I still think it would be the better route -- if not, a CGI movie.

TBH what I'd REALLY love is if VIII somehow got the Ivalice treatment. The world is dang deep and to confine it to just the main plot about Ultimecia and Time Compression wouldn't give it the full chance it needs to show off everything that can be shown. I'd LOVE to see things like different Sorceress and Knight dynamics or exploring the Shumi and the various forms they can take (including ones we haven't seen in the base game!) or more of the Centra or the initial war over Hyne's skin or what the heck are up with the Pupus or what goes on on the moon or even just a sidequest about a ghost story regarding a Sorceress who didn't find a Successor given it's said that Sorceresses who don't give up their powers become wayward spirits and can't enter the afterlife or how Guardian Forces act as nature spirits when not junctioned to humans and more people with Ellone's brand of psychic powers and- There's a lot.

Not sure whether it's intentional, but the pieces do fit, and it doesn't seem like nearly as much of a stretch as the Rinoa=Ultimecia theory that was going around. If nothing else, this spotlight has given me a greater appreciation for Selphie as a character. And man, I've finished this game many times but I can't remember that scene with Selphie's data at Trabia. I wonder what she was hiding...?

I agree. The MMO could build on SeeD and set the game many years before FFVIII started, maybe during Laguna's time period. Or have SeeD as a playable faction. You could choose to be a SeeD mercenary, a soldier of one of the major countries, or as a freedom fighter.

During the game when Selphie mentioned that she junctioned a GF as a kid and I remember thinking. "Yeah right. You're hiding something missy." Then later when I got the GF Eden my eyebrow raised at Eden's compatibility stat. "Why is Eden's summoning compatibility much higher compared than the others?" The stats alone made me question Selphie. How the heck did she junction such a powerful GF at such a young age? But with spells like that inside of her, she could easily take out any monster she wanted.

So in doing this video I got thinking, it might be an aweful lot of projecting (but wasnt that the beauty of retro characters in the day?), but I really think Selphie could be a heyoku empath. A term I only recently learned and has pulled towards my own understanding for a while. It's basically a term that means clown/fool & are type of people drawn to helping others along the way with outlandish/sometimes shocking actions. To see the reverse in any situation & have a strong, almost obsessive, control of the exterior emotions they portray. The crazy 'seemingly' extrovert energy storm that chases intuition more than logic, or what most would consider logical. Selphie has more than enough credentials under her belt to be considered a genius and a wise person that disguises themselves as a fool is always one to watch for. They always get underestimated and theres always a concious reason they act that way. I think even the idea, despite however nats fart chance this theory is, makes Selphie an infinitly cooler relatable character. ... damn I'm so deep in the FF8 tunnel right now, 21 hours editing does that to ya lmao. I always thought Selphie was a sorceress just because of her limit break. I always wondered if Mini Mog was her first GF though. I never had the pocket station thingy, so I was never really sure about how Mini Mog worked. Also with "The End" it's actually Trabia. If you look at the mountains they're snowy and icy, and all the flowers are white. If you compare with the Winhill landscape, the mountains aren't icy and the flowers are all colours.

Awesome & original theory peasant, FF8 is my favorite in the series as well as my 1st game in the FF series, but that's besides the point. There are so many theories/ possible theories to discuss. But one Theory I have always pondered but never seen anyone else mention, but I think Headmaster Cid is possibly a future version of Squall there are many reasons as to why I think this, but the moment that I think of the most is when Cid left Squall in charge of Balam during the battle against Galbadia & says to Squall " This is your fate, It is your destiny to lead the way in defeating the sorceress etc etc.." Also Rinoa & Edea have a lot in common other than the obvious fact that they're both sorceresses & its been theorized for years that Ultimecia is a future version of Rinoa but in a parallel timeline because Squall never returned to the flower fields. & we know Cid & Edea are married & Squall & Rinoa are basically a couple by the end of the game. What I think is that the FF8 timeline is on a constant cycle of "repeating itself" kinda like the Dharma philosophy but some how various versions of squall & Rinoa coexist within the same universe? i.e Squall=Cid Rinoa=Edea/Ultimecia.

A correction I'd make is that there can be multiple sorceresses at one time, so Edea and Adel were both sorceresses during the same period, and other eras have had more than one as well. Also, it wasn't too clear, but not just anyone can be a sorceress, only candidates can do so. Adel wanted to find candidates, and that's why she was searching so long and hard. This seems to imply that candidates are rather rare, since she already controlled Esthar and would have been able to find one there if one existed. Maybe she was just eliminating them all, or there was another reason, but it seems like if she'd been able to find a candidate in Esthar she wouldn't have gone to Winhill to hunt for more. This is all to say that, yes, between Quistis and Selphie, the latter is probably the candidate, but that she'd be pretty rare and probably unaware (as Rinoa was) that she could become a sorceress. Good theory though, always down for more FF8 videos.

Selfies limit break is “the end” which is also the beginning of the game and also the end of the game, and also the art in Ultemecias Castle. The Latin literally, means that Selfie is the messenger of a sorceress fueled future where they cannot die and all fo mad. The hidden “sleeping” is Selfie in both Trabia and Balamb garden. Selfie and Rinoa become sorceresses as a result of the events of Final Fantasy eight, so Rinoa will out live squall as will selfie. Using GIFs overtime Rinoa and selfie forget who they are and don the names of the Ultamecia and Adele, knowing the events of their own deaths and unable to die, Ultamecia/Rinoa sends selfie/Adele back in time, only to repeat the events of Final Fantasy so that they can finally die with the very creation of SEEDs. Or whatever, I dont know, thats my tin foil theory.

That you can draw the missed GFs in Ultimecia's castle is something that was added into later versions of the game by popular demand, but the original Japanese version didn't have them. If you missed Levi from Nog you missed it for good and would never get it without restarting the game.

Strange you made this, because I was just talking on Twitter the other day how FFVIII still has the best overall FF story of them all. I Also got my masters in theoretical physics, believe it or not, from Georgie Tech before going into computer science and development, so Ultimecia's whole concept of Time Compression was incredibly fascinating to me in how it's done and what it actually does. People don't realize the entire Omen trailer of FFXV is like total homage to FFVIII, even. Another interesting fact, the Ring of the Lucii is Indeed first found in FFVIII as a secret item.... And guess what? Not only does the item description discuss the Reaper worshipping family from the original VS plot, but is used to summon Doom Train when one has 666 items..... And is marked with the Seal of Solomon, the mack daddy of all magical symbols in historical and Biblical lore, used to take dominion over divine and evil beings alike. Sooooo many secrets still hidden in this game. That being said, a few rapid fire thoughts I still believe, no matter what the team says. 1.First game to explain magic was never intended to be used humans, and how you must, 'draw' it from demons. This opens a whole can of worms for every FF story. 2. Squall indeed died. 3. Rinoa did in fact go back in time in one alternate dimension and achieved time compression using technology and magic, splitting the time lines, becoming Ultimecia, and bringing back Squall as Grievera, the summon. 4. The witches are dope as fuck and fascinating. The power that is passed down is more like a curse and always deals with death. 5. The ultimate power of a witch is the ability to travel through time. 6. I love the music, especially "Compression of Time" (great for chilling while coming up with theories. Helped me come up with some of my best.) Edea's theme has the best harpsichord ever and is oh so creepy. 7. Seifert is such a pimp that he legit beat Odin fair and square, in one hit, straight up. 8. I could go on forever, but I have a million different ways to logically prove that FFVIII and FFXV are indeed linked. 9. I still drive around with my sterling silver Sleeping Lionhart hanging on my rear view window in the convertible. Coolest trinket Square ever made. 10. Your ideas in this video are all valid. And yes, Square Did go this deep with the story of FFVIII and it is extremely occult based. I will do a video based on SE and their origin in the occult as source material one day. I got to admit this could be a possability, the fact she has magic in her limit break kinda screams that she has some form of magical power, the question is...is she aware of it or is she trying to hide it? alot of the stuff you said (ie she was top of the Class A in SeeD) adds to this aswell but theres no hard confirmation within the story to confirm once and for all that she could be a sorceress, or at least have the ability to become one Giving that the game is heavy on "Time Compression" anything could be possible, like maybe Ultimecia is Selphie's mother without realizing, Riona and Selphia could be sisters, anything is possible with Time Compression :P Overall, i would like to believe Selphie is a sorceress and she knows it, but is just trying to hide the truth from everyone incase she is branded a villian.

Or maybe what she's trying to "hide" is the violent and psychopathic part of herself that comes out from time to time rather than being a "secret sorceress." For examples, take the prison scene where Selphie suggests skinning a Moomba. Or her absolute glee at using destruction rather than diplomacy - "Blow it to smithereens with a rocket launcher!"

I love this theory! Selphie was always a favorite of mine personality wise. So much that yo this day I still use the phrase booyaka to this day. And it makes sense that she could've been the next sorceress given she was the 2cd character created in the line-up. Maybe after Rinoa was thought up and given to squall as a love interest they placed the sorceress bit on her and not Selphie. Who knows anymore

You know... I'm wondering if (now hear me out on this), Square had planned on making a sequel to VIII in the future if it had sold as well as VII. But seeing as how it didn't get as good of reviews, they decided either to put the idea of a sequel on the back burner and just eventually forgot about it... Or just scrapped it entirely. Either way, the whole deal with Selphie being a sorceress (or eventually becoming a Sorceress) would have made this game just that more exciting and would have been and awesome plot twist! Here's hoping Square does something like that with Selphie in a sequel or a Remake of VIII (PLEASE O' YE GODS OF THINE CRYSTALS, LET THERE BE ONE OR THE OTHER)!!!!

I doubt a sequel was ever planned since Hironobu Sakaguchi has said for decades that he never intended to follow up on the story of any of his games. He preferred to leave stories a little vague with suggestions of what might happen so that players could fill in the gaps and come to different conclusions. I would love to see a sequel or remake if it's done very well. This is my favourite FF game and Selphie is my favourite character in the game.

Always thought about this, I'm glad I weren't the only one. Other simple explanations for her limit break could be just that 1) her magic abilities are related to the forgotten GF, or simply 2) her weapon is some sort of spell casting device, since she obtains new limit breaks with new weapons.

Selphie is my favourite FF character and she'a a sorceress for sure, I spent ages working out my theory years ago and it had most of these points including a few others like high base GF compatibility (only below Rinoa and Edea I think, two other sorceresses). Glad some others have realized too. Also note at 18:56 where the first words Edea speaks after taking Ultimecia's powers are "Is this...the end?" Just after gaining sorceress powers she has a vision of Selphie's final limit break, while in the area where that spell visually references (the flower field is just outside the orphanage). Again in the ending, when Squall and Rinoa are lost in time, Selphie brings them back to the meadows using The End (she did warn the party not to get lost in the wrong time) you could say it was Rinoa but she looks surprised to see both the area change and Squall revive so it doesn't seem like Rinoa was responsible. At the very least if it was Rinoa then it still shows that it is a sorceress ability that Selphie uses. So then how don't the rest of the party notice or question when Selphie displays obvious sorceress abilities? My guess is she has them under that fascination spell that Edea/Ultimecia uses so they just kind of accept it. Oh yeah, and somehow Selphie is able to detect and manipulate Scan magic preventing her from being vertically rotated, it's the only explanation I can come up with why everyone else can be freely rotated except her.

I can remember summoning Levitation at Dollet in my FF8 demo disc. Holy crap this theory is amazing! FF8 was my first and I love it, only thing I don't like about FF8 is Irvine, he should have recognised Edea at the end of disc 1, but says nothing before trying to snipe her. And he had no problem leaving your whole party at the prison, he only helped Rinoa and she had to hound him to help everyone else, what an asshole. He was seriously gonna leave them there!

Irvine did recognize Edea at the end of disc 1, that's why he hesitated on shooting her. Didn't want to explain that to Squall though.

"Rinoa can't Angel Wing without junction" She actually can - she'll still use any spells in her inventory. In fact if you're doing a No-J run, you can recruit Bahamut and use abilities he already has to put Ultima and Meteor on her. No junction necessary, just activate Angel Wing and watch her wreck stuff.

@21:29 Greatest fan-art ever! Also, to add to your last point, Selphie's highest compatibility GFs give magical buffs. Ruby Light from Carbuncle gives reflect (and shell?) while Cerberus (her highest naturally compatible GF) gives you Double and Triple. Hmmm, could it really be just another coincidence that its akin to her LB where you get cast random magic a random *number* of times (usually 2 or 3, like double or triple)?

Hyne kin of reminds me of Fallout 4.The Soul Survivor builds and leaves a settlement with a radio beacon turned on. Later on it is fully populated with people who can do very little for themselves. Kind of the Sole survivor's tools, they can farm corn, tatos and mutfruit for you to make into infinite adhesive. Yet settlers can do very little for themselves. "Ok, we produce 10 units of food but have 12 people. Wait till the Sole Survivor who hasn't been here in weeks visits again, they'll plant more. Only 10 beds, well crafting another two is beyond us. We need the SS"
