Also, unless they changed it for WotL a monk with Two Swords WILL still attack twice; once with each hand.

That's correct! Dual Wield on Monks is just absurd, though I would be remiss if I didn't mention Ninja with Brawler as well.

Because of its dependence in PA, Monk's damage is almost OP in Chapter 1 and 2 when weapons are weak. Falls slightly behind at Chapter 4 at level 40ish 50ish when you start getting the best weapons and equipment, but gets a comeback at higher levels when you grow your PA and HP (but equipment available is essentially the same). So it's an awesome job for beginners to use early on, spend some time, leave for a while (but keep the skills as a secondary), and then come back if they decide to level up well past past story levels.

My Monk build. I do not obsess with Maintenance here because the items can be easily replaced if broken. Monk Dan Brave 97 Faith 03 Punch Art Steal Blade Grasp Two Swords Move + 3 N/A N/A N/A Rubber Costume Feather Mantle

It may just be me but I like to stack as much move, evasion and status resistance is all it needs. If I have more time, I will level it up as a Ninja or Thief for the extra Speed.

this use to be my favorite class when I played single player years ago. use to like getting time mage to teleport but I noticed on a few runs they start to fall off guess it was the bravery dropping while grinding

Monk does well throughout most of the storyline game, and they are versatile and reliable. All around top use job for me. I'm not sure what the HP increase is, but I have had monks with more HP than my knights of the same level with the best armor I could buy.

Totally agreed, Ryan, and thanks for the comment! Since Monks have slightly better HP growth than Knights (9 vs 10) and definitely better class HP (135 vs 120), it is no wonder Monks will be the beefiest unit in your roster. You can also use Equip Heavy Armor if you want to really put their HP over the top! 💪

monks are always my fav class in ff games. they are unhingedly consistent while many classes fall apart.

Haha thanks J7Jase! I had the same experience, and I couldn't bring myself to commit to a Monk for anyone besides Ramza. Little did I know at the time it was because he had such better Bravery. Now that I am smart I play them with much more Bravery and let them level up for awhile for that healthy HP growth! 🧠👈

So you're telling me First Strike can be used with GUNS AT A LONG RANGE TO CANCEL ENEMY ATTACKS FROM A DISTANCE? I'm going to try this combo on my next paythrough for sure, thanks for the info!

Keep in mind if you're using a weapon with a minimum or strict distance like crossbows or instruments, then First Strike won't trigger. 👍 I'm a big fan of First Strike and guns on a chemist or orator, and I hope you have enjoyment with your combos as well! Any recommendations on secondary abilities for monks? I really like monks with dance (although I doubt it’s optimal by any means) since both scale off of PA and it gives monks something to do before getting in range of the opponent. I’ll usually take lifefont as a movement ability and something like bracer as an accessory without suffering so much from the limited 3 move 4 jump inherent to the class. Have yet to try in pvp but I def plan on it lol

Hey Dr Jay, that's a great question simply because nearly any other melee jobs abilities work well with a primary Monk! I like Jump if I can get my speed to 13. If you're rocking dual wield I might go arts of war. In that vein Steal is not a bad option with innate Brawler. I would stay away from Throw and Geomancy as you're going you have low move and MA to help those abilities out. If you're looking for something off-meta, consider summon to get a big Golem cast to protect your squad. 👍 I appreciate you checking out the episode and dropping a comment! You can use martial arts with a weapon, absolutely. You can even equip Brawler as a support skill to empower your martial arts and still have a weapon equipped.
