I absolutely loved this game! I was lucky enough to be chosen to be part of the public beta test for the PS2. Sony shipped an early version of the HDD along with beta software in order for gamers to stress test the network. Knowing that they had just sent out what was then $100 worth of product, Sony "promised" that if we sent everything back we would be sent final retail copies. We were all skeptical and I know some folks chose to keep the hardware. I reluctantly packaged mine back up and shipped it back to Sony. True to their word I received a final retail copy of the HDD and FFXI in the mail many months later. I played the game for many years, such a wonderful experience. I wish more games would support the HDD but I am not holding out hope.

A++ video. I was manager in a videogame store, and we had access to beta FF11 back then. Got addicted to the difficulty quickly, even thought i probably liked nothing about the game. The challenge of getting even small amount of gils (money), the unforgiving loss of xp if you "try", the almost impossible items to get, waking up, at 3 o'clock in the morning with some linkshell friends to camp "Malborger" (The malboro that gives the item 1/3 for monk's brown belt), being stuck at CoP early missions until they unlocked them at 99, etc. I've played almost all mmo's. When i meet ex linkshell members irl, they always have this special look in their eyes meaning "I know, i suffered too, but we were together".

I was a DRG on Asura which had 2.4k at peak and 1.8k off peak. if you were to /sea all there would only be around 60-80 DRG on at any given time and only a handful would be 50+ so whenever you seen a DRG run past we always used to /salute each other. It was camaraderie at its finest because we all knew that people who mained DRG didn't do it for the prestiege but only because they loved the job

The pride you felt when people would immediately ask you to join their EXP party as soon as you logged online or the moment a piece of gear dropped to you that had a 5% chance to drop...so exhilarating. The good old days when Nyzul first came out or the time a Defending ring dropped when fighting king behemoth. Good times.

You guys reminiscing about the old FFXI is exactly how I reminisce about the old MapleStory. It was addicting, you needed dedicated friends if you wanted to run party quests (dungeons), rare drops were actually RARE (and you were praised if you had such gear), dying took so much hard earned exp (didn't de-level you, but still sucked compared to the tiny % you lose now), getting to lvl 30 took as long as it takes to get to lvl 130 nowadays, I could go on forever... Basically how it is nowadays is how Pete described how FFXI is nowadays.

I had this same experience except with Runescape instead of FFXI. The game took over my life for a while, and was my first MMO I had ever played as a kid. It came down to the point where I cared about my in-game character and the life I had in-game more than my actual life in reality. I would literally be in school just thinking about what I'd be doing when I got home, and planning out every little thing I wanted to get accomplished that night. When I met other people like me later on in high school, we like instantly became best of friends and shared all of our knowledge and experiences.

To sum it up, FFXI felt like real life. Where there was endless possibilities and social interaction paired with a sense of accomplishment for the things you did and completed. Non of this new streamline bullshit that allows you to que into dungeons within seconds and basically making gear easily obtained by everyone which in contrast to FFXI where you had to work for hours and days and weeks to get shit done and separate the casuals from the hardcore niche. Eliminating HNMs and making them force pop was a slap to the face for all those who camped endless hours of Fafnir for a ridill or Aspid for that rare Dalmatica and my personal favorite King Vinegaroon for dat Ace's Helm. Hopefully it is remastered one day without a post 75 CAP abyssea. Repping for FAIRY SERVER XODLA - 75 SAM/NIN/PLD/BLM

Level 99 BST here. I loved that job so much. You could solo back before every job could solo. You could help diffuse mob trains back before they despawned. And you got to do your experience leveling in very unique places where most parties never get to explore. It was a terrific and challenging job. I played for years, and honestly Black Mage was my first main to 99, I also had Red Mage and Corsair and Samurai leveled up. And even though Black Mage was probably my favorite overall, I had such a great time and wonderful nostalgic memories playing BST. It's very close to my heart.

I've watched so many videos of people gushing over FF11 and talking about crazy experiences. Hearing these stories and seeing the excitement just light up people's faces, it has me fascinated with this game and wishing I played it in its golden years. I was an FF player back then, but was heavily invested in 10 & 10-2. (I had excess of 1000 hours concentrated into just 2 individual playthroughs, don't ask me how) Plus I was deeply opposed to subscription-based games/services (and still am for the most part). To this day, the grand total of my MMO experiences is a 10-day trial of WoW back in 2005. I played basically non-stop for those 10 days and then stopped cold forever. But hearing these stories about FF11 makes me want to get the game and play on the private Eden server in hopes of experiencing some of the magic I hear so many talk about.

I think you could safely play the game again without getting sucked back in. The nostalgia will at max last a week. You'll be able to go through these old areas and see the sights and hear the music, but it will be deserted. When I played more recently, it was sad seeing so few players. But in a way, I liked wondering through these areas by myself. My more recent visit back to the game, the big memorable moment for me was visiting the area in the jungle near Temple of Uggalepih. I felt like I was walking through a memory. It was very surreal. But in that little visit, I was able to feel that immersion again. I just said to myself "I'm going to visit my favorite old areas and put this game to rest". For several days, I seriously just wondered around, occasionally hunting old favorite NM's, doing nothing but reminiscing about the time I played the game. I would recall wonderful memories of times with friends. The experience was enough to make it worth it to come back, but I didn't feel obligated to stay.

Bastok represent! When I first started playing FFXI way back at the original NA launch, I was completely focused on getting to Samurai, yet I had never played a MMORPG before in my life, so it took me months to get there. I remember my early Valkurm Dunes parties. None of the English speaking players had any advanced jobs yet, so all my parties were 4-5 warriors and a white mage. Sometimes 1 Black Mage if we were lucky. Those were such carefree days. I was working part time, still living at home, and spent all my free time every day sitting in front of my PC on FFXI. The funny thing about it is, back then I loved it so much, and I wouldn't have traded my time with the game for the world. But today, I could never play a game that hardcore again. I just don't have the time or the patience that FFXI demanded. I mean, the time effort, and suffering that just getting my SAM AF body piece took alone was insane. It was a coffer chest in the Temple of Uggly (that's that I called it. The Tonberry infested temple). It took so many people helping me to work through that place, check every coffer spawn points, farm the Tonberry for keys to open all the doors just to explore the place to check for the coffer, and farm the key to open the actual coffer. We had to glitch open one specific door and that always caused many deaths, then we had to fight and re-fight the doll that guarded another one of the doors each time we passed through it. I had a level 75 Dragoon friend who was with me helping for 7 hours. She was 74 by the time I got my coffer open. And the hell of it is that the SAM AF body piece isn't even good. It had tank stats on it.

Starcaises with the slimes was in Ordell's Caves. I spent three months camping Sozu Rogberry in Temple of Uggalepih against botters and killed it around 70 times before The Thief's Knife dropped (I kept a logbook of my kills). At the time it was so valuable that the selling price was higher than the maximum price you could set in your bazaar, well over 100 million gil. Of course as a THF I wanted it to use not to sell, owning one was a mark of your dedication to the THF job and going down into that hellhole and camping it for months till you got it was considered a badge of honor among thieves. They eventually introduced item levels to equipment (your total "ilevel" determined by your gear's item levels) and content levels now go up to around level 140 or so, if you want the best of the best gear you still have to group with other players. Also they now have "job points" that work similarly to merit points but have a much greater effect on your character and take a LONG time to cap out and the only effective way to earn them is by grinding on that job. Job points are exclusive to each job so if you want to get job points for MNK you have to grind them on MNK. A character with capped job points has a set of gold stars over their name and has a "job master" title.

The difficulty of the game really brought people together, not just monsters or the fact that you had to party up to get anywhere, but the lack of information too.. Chats in parties or on Linkshells could and often did lead to new adventures. The world held that kind of wonder and danger to it that made it really feel like you were living the life of an adventurer in Vana'diel. It makes me sad to think that in the current times a MMO like this one will probably never be possible again.

I started ffxi around the end of July 2004 a year after I got out of high school. I remember some of my early memories was thesummer festival. It felt like a real life event was going on. You had fireworks going on at night, you had that awesome Japanese summer music playing. I remember gathering goldfish for thr event, it was a blast. Oh man Christmas was super awesome, you would get a Christmas Jueno theme I believe the 1st year I played was when they had the Santa hat. The game was just amazing. I still play every so often but the game has definitely changed to a mostly solo experience. There are some big party end game stuff left but not a whole lot. This was my addiction threw out my 20's up to 30's. I'll be 34 this year....

I played Beastmaster and it was awesome. We were way too busy soloing it up and trying to survive to ever say hi to passerbys. And yeah, it was a ton of fun to join a party as BST and prove ppl wrong about BST abilities to be effective in a party.

I wanted to shed some light on the tower/slime scenario you guys are talking about. So there is Delkfutt's Tower, which at the top has a Gigas. And the Lvl 60 Gigas NM's on the top floors drop Bracelets (hand gear) which sold for near a million gil for a long time. On the other hand, there is Ordelle's Caves in La Thiene Plateau. And they had a lot of stairs where slimes would spawn. The Slimes had a lot of RMT(bots) camping them for the Ring than can be crafted into a Snipers Ring. Those rings often sold for 500k to a million gil. It was basically the same price as a snipers ring since it was the main ingredient. I'm not sure which of the two you are refering to when you are telling your story but the info im giving may help you remember and confirm the exact details.

I came back two years ago after I quit to play XIV. I missed XI so much that I returned and lot has changed but the nostalgia is still there. The feeling is still there. There is no other game like XI and XIV has been dead to me.

I stared with EQ1 while in the Army. After leaving the Army I started on my PS2 Day One. No job = TOO much FFXI. I Loved this game. I can't imagine playing this game while in school, holding a job or having a SO. I still dream about the music...:)

There is a population of gamers that are dying for a game to come along like FFXI. Give me horrible graphics, give me no voice acting, give me a GAME.

Loved FFXI, no experience can compare to playing FFXI back before Abyssea era. I lived in San Doria close nearly ten years, it was home.

Thanks for bringing back those memories!!!

There are plenty of people who play still. There are still around 100,000 players between all the servers.. Abyssea xp pt's don't exist anymore, and grinding to get job points feel like old xp pt's since you have to skillchain and magic bomb. to kill mobs fast enough. I came back to the game in April and have been loving it.

Safiry Productions 100.000? where? when? every day on sylph theres no more of 400 player online, prolly we are 7-800 if we all login, so i think its the same on the other server and if we pick them all 10.000 player in the end? hoping in a mega world merge and make only 3 server for the final FFXI era, before the end.

@@cedeking3855 Asura has over 2900-3100 players on at any given time. The last subscription numbers were around 110,000 subs. That's more than 99% of mmos out there

@@tjtower well im happy to hear this, my comment was about more than 1 year ago anyway and in 2017 Sylph was really empty.

I always wanted to play FFXI back in the hey day but it was really cool hearing about how hard things were. I definitely had similar experiences when it came to the first 3 years of WoW compared to where it's at now

I remember my LS trying to get a R/E weapon (can't remember which) and a load of gilsellers showed up. I stood on top of their party, spamming every animation that I could to hopefully get them to lag into losing the NM (some kind of bat), including curing their tank. Unbelievably, as a Black Mage, I drew hate at the last possible moment with my cures; my shock spikes actually killed the NM and we got the drop. What an evening

Kraken club was like lvl 34ish and attacked 1-8 times. what made it really epic was it stacked with dbl attack, and also when DRKs used them to 2hr HNM's
