ok so I agree with everything you said - I need to add a small note however due to recent tanks I have run into in the dutyfinder - maybe they just arent used to tanking or are outright new to it and haven't bothered really looking at it and how things work? I don't know - but I feel it should be mentioned - maybe some of them will take note of it and change for the better - when pulling wall to wall - please keep some aoe mixed in - if your group is doing lots of aoe moves - then mix in more please lol - I have seen tanks pull wall to wall - and then start doing nothing but single target rotation recently - then when the group asks them to - mix in a bit more aoe please - the tank fully ignores it and then blames the group for the wipe - because the dps and healer quickly ripped most of it off the tank - emnity is stupid broken now - I honestly don't think there is a good reason for that to happen anymore - other than the tank dying - I mean your tooltips give you an idea what skills are aoe and what skills aren't - so it really isn't that hard - also if you have a whm in the group and they toss that bubble down - stand in it please - it helps heal you - its not a shield - inspite of looks - its something like a regen field - which gains a healing buff to those in it at higher levels - meaning it makes keeping you up - easier for the healer - generally considered a good thing. not a marker for ring around the dang rosey lol. another thing I have noticed is in trial content and such - off tanks not using tank stance - which unless you outgear the main tank - there really isn't any reason not to use it anymore - SE got rid of the negatives about it - heck its both a mitigation buff and a str buff - which while I can't say for sure to what degree - for tanks means generally a damage buff - to some measure - so even if your off tanking - unless its deliberate so the mt can mt - no real reason not to use it as far as I can tell. - and from what I have seen thus far - they changed how the skills that caused stance dancing to be a thing, so that it isn't a thing anymore - so no real reason to go out of it either lol. - again this is for those tanks that - perhaps don't know this stuff - maybe someone will see it and it will help them - one can hope. :D

2:31 The problem with that is that people who don't play multiple roles, or at least have knowledge of all the mechanics and not just those relevant to their roles, won't really know what someone else is going through. A DPS might take a hit and think "oh, the healer will just throw a Cure/Physick/Benefic my way and it'll be fine", but they might not realize the healer is already trying their hardest to keep the tank alive and that extra damage on the DPS is a mini panic attack. Likewise, if a healer isn't aware of the tankbuster and berserk mechanic, they won't think much of the tank interrupting the mobs. Or if nobody interrupts and the tank dies, they might just think the tank is dumb and doesn't know how to use cooldowns. But the worst feeling is when you, as a SMN/RDM, res the healer multiple times to salvage a run and don't even get a commendation :/ (mentioning it cuz that's what happened with my first run of The Twinning)

This is a solid guide, don't let the naysayers get you down. ShadowBringers has changed tanking in a major way in that you have to really pay a lot more attention and proper monitor your cool downs then you did before as non of the tanks are as beefy as they used to be in previous expansions due to the change in healing.

Something important for lower level stuff or if your gear isn't sync'd yet, is making sure you focus down the lower health enemies instead of just spamming aoe attacks. I know this might be basic to tank players, but I'm a healer main that's playing GNB for this expansion. I'm having a hard time working out when to use my cooldowns and which cooldowns to use on pulls. My damage is fine but I feel like I'm not properly mitigating or pairing my abilities together for these lengthy longer pulls. I would love a tank by tank breakdown on which cooldowns to use at which time during a pull. This would help me realize whether it's me that's not very good at tanking, or whether my healers aren't helping to mitigate damage properly.
@edbrown19655 жыл бұрын
Hi! I don't have a pull by pull plan for cooldowns in each dungeon, but I'll chime in and say what I do as a GNB in expert roulette. Most dungeons have two wall to wall pools before each boss which typically involve grabbing 2 or 3 packs. The way I think of it is to cycle your cooldowns. The basic principle with big pulls is to never be without some form of mitigation. For instance I'll pop Rampart during the first pull, and as rampart runs out I'll heart of stone or camoflauge. Only stack defensive cooldowns if the damage gets too much to handle, knowing when to do this comes with experience and might depend on the healer.. However, I do tend to stack Arm's length since the value of slow + dmg reduction is just really high imo. Keep in mind important abilities to interrupt like the berserk shown in this video and also the Evil Armor's in Akadaemia Anyder. If you prioritize always keeping up mitigation and not stacking cooldowns but cycling them instead you should have defensive cooldowns like rampart coming off cd during the second pull. My first pull cycle might look something like rampart then heart of stone then camoflauge then heart of stone again (using Aurora off cd always). Second pull might be arms length, nebula, heart of stone, rampart. Rinse and repeat. Hope this helps.

It depends on how quick the fight is. During bosses, its generally possible to have 1 cooldown for every tank buster (some bosses are relaxed enough that you can use cooldowns to smooth out auto attack damage and still have enough for the tank busters). Dungeon pulls vary a lot depending on how well the group can burn down enemies and the size of the pull.

I'm still a noob at tanking, currently playing a level 70 gunbreaker, and I have a question : how do you recognize tank busters attacks ? Are these every channeled attacks that do not have a visible AoE ? I already have the habit to use defensive CDs to mitigate damage, but I don't think I ever reacted to tank buster attacks, if I even encountered one at this point of the game.
@iBluairJgR5 жыл бұрын
Generally, they are like you said, channeled attacks that don't have a visible AoE. Each boss will have a different one so you'll probably always get hit by it at least once or twice before getting the timing right. I know I do lol.

Is it possible to tank correctly with the controller;; im super nervous, but i decided to try tanking. My mate is a healer and since were playing in the same room we can easily communicate on whats going on. But i find it hard to switch target sometimes or even just selecting a taget at all with the controller. Imma filty casual who hates having to do obligatory dungeons to advance the story because i have a hard time dealing with haters. Any of you main a tank with a controller and still manage to do good or should i just stick to dps and wait 40 minutes to cue in dungeon...?

Yeah, of course. The controller systems in game are very well designed. Switching targets is the hardest part but even that isn't enough to make tanking impossible.

I underuse interject and shield swipe(bash?) when’s best to use em?
@iBluairJgR5 жыл бұрын
When the enemy cast bar is glowing then you can use interject to interrupt. Shield Bash* is a bit more niche. Its a stun on the global cooldown so you can use it to interrupt enemy attacks if you want to but it interrupts combos so there's a downside.
@colacitoshow5 жыл бұрын
if i think im taking too much damage i just press tab and bash the entire pull, one by one (also use kick stun in between). that gives a lot of time for healer to catch up. with that said im only lvl 60 so i dont know if it works on higher level encounters.

I've changed from dps to tank about a month and I've never been more in love with a job, but I still struggle to when to keep aoe rotation or single on trash mobs, like, when there are 3 enemies I do one aoe then keep single rotation, when are 4 or more I do only aoe, unless there's a dangerous enemy in the pack, then I focus on him 1st, is this good? there is a "rule" for these situations?
@iBluairJgR5 жыл бұрын
When there are 3 ore more enemies, you can spam your AoE rotation non-top. It'll generally amount to higher potentiates than your single target rotation. It might seem a bit boring to do that but keep in mind that each of the tanks have resources that get build while doing AoE attacks and mitigation tools to rotate through. So even while you're spamming your area attacks, you've got defensive cooldowns to consider.

Having enemies do their AoE while another weaker enemy has a pull ability to try to pull you into the AoE that you have to interrupt or kill as fast as possible would be a challenging/engaging encounter. Not sure if something like that exists in the game yet, as I'm only in Heavensward.

Leveling dungeons usually don't get too crazy with their mechanics but there have been some really wild things. In Saint Mocianne's Arboretum, one of the level 70 dungeons, there's an enemy that will cast an AoE spell that will turn anything inside, even enemies, into a sapling. You can interrupt it or position the enemies inside to transform them into saplings.

I havent actually dont any in depth analysis of bosses or the current savage content but I remember in the lead up to Shadowbringers they mentioned bosses would have an element of Randomness to them like switching the positions of a couple mechanics within a boss' rotation. So far ive only really noticed 1 or 2 of these on my own but how true have they been to that statement? I also like how we actually have things to actively use our Stuns and Interrupts on in mob pulls.

I haven't done both of the extreme primals yet (too much leveling to do) but for Titania Extreme, there's a mechanic that has 3 different positions it can spawn in and you have to adjust around that.
