Its not as good as Shadowbringers but for me personally its my second favorite Expansion in this game

I was there for the beta test for ARR. Hearing ARR is boring and people quitting makes me wonder what changed with people. For those that stuck around, we had ARR for 2 years before getting heavenward. It was praised actually back in the day. We also didnt have all those creature comforts that you all are blessed with simple thing like duty finder. Even the MSQ was not adjusted to level us so we were using Fates in between the MSQ. Food buff disappeared upon every death during raid. Dispite all this, people in 2013 liked and stuck around ARR and invited many more others to FF14. This leads me to believe that we have recruited certain types of people that doesnt share our thoughts. And I even question if we did the right thing to ask them to try FF14.

The problem is the xp gain is way higher so you realy just go from cutscene to cutscene without having to do any side content. Because of that arr as it is now is pretty much a single player experience. Couple that with the rush to endgame mentality a lot of ppl have these days and voila.

Everything you listed is exactly why I quit at 50 after FATE grinding my ass off in Coerthas and Northern Thanalan and didn't come back until the end of Stormblood. ARR was better than 1.0 by a country mile but it still had its rough edges compared to its more polished(by then)competitors.

Between the unending snark was some legit funny jokes. Good stuff. That being said, the combat being dull is also a factor of the fact that since you're doing the content waaaay later, you're missing a bunch of the buttons that were there to begin with. Expansions drop, buttons get merged, replaced, etc. I'm sure you're aware of this, but since this sort of video can scare away new players, I felt the need to point that out.

@@PaperthinHymn My issue has historically been you have a lvl 70 char that doesn't understand what the different skills actually do. They just get dropped in but without having the experience of needing to learn and apply the different skills as they get them while leveling. Just getting dropped into current content with a, mostly, full tool kit but without the understanding that comes with the experience of using the skills as you're leveling. You can learn it other ways, but most folks just get dropped in to hit current content, and are a detriment because they *don't* learn the skills that they should have been using since level 10-15. I think one of the worst I ran into was a lvl 75 PLD that didn't understand what Hallowed Ground did... (story skip to current expansion) ARR is a slog, there's no denying that (I'm actually running another char through ARR now as I personally *like* the story...). It's nothing to be scared of, it just an unfortunate time sink. But it sets the foundations for the world building and the rest of the expansions. If you aren't interested in the story, well that's fine, but it's a Final Fantasy game first and foremost. It revolves around the story (even if you can somewhat ignore it) and the hell that is ARR is very slow going but it sets up the stage that the rest of the expansions run with. But the ARR slog does force you to learn the skills because you aren't flooded with them and can see what each does as you get it and how to fit it into the class/job instead of just: Press this, then press this one, weave this in as the cool down is happening.... You understand the skills more, and if something happens you can react to it better than if you're pressing buttons on blind memorization. It's slow and boring as all hell... but you actually learn it more instead of rote memorization that quite a few folks run on. When things go badly, without an understanding of the skills many people I've seen just break down until they can get back into the full rotation they know, even if just using a couple other skills they never use (weren't told to press those buttons in the how-to video... if they're even on the hotbar) would have helped get them back into their rotation much sooner.

It's a shame that ARR is such a slow burn with a lot of the entry level MMO problems, because once you hit the endgame, and then the lead-up to Heavenward, shit starts getting real. Then you actually get to Heavensward and shit gets *REAL*.

Having not having played WoW in a while I reinstalled it, went to my trial account - the one I created a bunch of rogues on for Pilgrim's Progress - and made a Paladin. It was one button for most of the way to 10 until you get Judgement and finally something ranged you can use to pull, then a stun (not unlike FFXIV) and finally at 10 your first two-button combo. So it really isn't that different. I was really hoping the revamp would add more voice acting but unfortunately it doesn't.The only real change I've noticed in limited playing is that the NPCs in Fallgourd Float you meet during the Haukke Manor unlock are sitting at a different table - which was a usability improvement.

To be fair having so little amout of skills is the result of expansions. There used to be far more when it was just ARR but as expansions some removed and new ones added in higher levels so low levels consists of very few skills.

As boring as ARR seems, it teaches you the basics. Plus it's shorter than compared to before patch 5.3 came out. So at least it's not 100+ quests in between ARR and Heavensward anymore. Go through ARR, learn the basics, pay attention towards the end and even more so Heavensward, pay attention for certain spots in Stormblood, cause by Shadowbringers lots of things will make sense and knowing things in the story makes it worth it. =} It only took me a month, I'm slow at things, to go through ARR while my friends went through it all in two weeks, lol.

Sadly ARR won’t get any more changes to the storyline. Also, a lot of ShB contents get QoL changes in this expansion while they are still release new contents. They don’t give you less contents, they fix up things that ppl unable to play through the game or making it easier to get to newest expansion. It definitely isn’t a lack of contents but improvements. Till they finish ShB, the game will be quite different from how it seems to be like in previous expansions. Right now there are a lot of stuff the devs need to look up into as well as contents that not even update like Hildbrand questline. For details of each patch, remember to official website before doing a video since other content creators already know about them which they don’t say much about how the devs handle these contents. Also, looking forward to Bozja for the coming update.

Most of the other female NPCs: Kick ass, take names. Or at least be useful. I mean, Tataru isn't a direct fighter, but in Heavansward and Stormblood, she's the spider in the web who knows everyone and who you talk to to get what. Minfilia: Gosh, I got knocked out and taken prisoner *again*. But somehow, I'm giving orders to people a thousand times more competent than me.

Honestly I was under the same impression. ARR did little for me. The post ARR stuff is quite a bit more interesting, but then shit starts to hit the fan when you get to Heavensward. I know everyone is saying this, but without going into any plot details, where ARR is like playing through Final Fantasy I in terms of storytelling, Heavensward is like Final Fantasy Tactics. A shit load of drama, a lot of which directly involves your main character. You also start to really care about your NPC buddies in Heavensward. It’s a very different experience from ARR. Finally, you don’t have to but if you haven’t I’d suggest doing the Dragoon Job Quests through 50. There is a certain character who becomes a major character in the MSQ and a chunk of his backstory is revealed in the Dragoon quests. Going forward though, I’ve only seen MSQ related material in Dragoon and Dark Knight job quests.

Is HW better? Hell yes. Do I think you'll like it? Probably not. You've made it clear in the past you don't care for stories in your games. That's going to cloud your view no matter what. You'll just go through the story looking for things to dislike. It's not a bad thing, we all do it with some things. But I doubt you'll be able to go through the story and enjoy it. But yeah. ARR is definitely the biggest hurdle as it's just fucking boring for most people.

Hes claimed in the past he cares for stories in videogames like Mass Effect, its not like hes putting an actual effort to dislike this game rather his central focus is in raiding and not the very long story of a very huge game. Fun story from when i started Me lvl 8 knowing nothing on how to play or level and just doing sides on north shroud. Simple quest to pick something on a isolated place. Simple enou-- LV 50 SCORPION blocks your path. I sneak pass it, get tge item, DIE, respawn and finish the quest. Still my foundest noob memorie from this game.

10x more entertaining than the actual story. This game's story has so many sycophants, but I'm in Heavensward and it's still so incredibly boring and so is the combat for every single job I've tried. The ad nauseum response I get is "it gets better". How many expansions do I have to wait until "it gets better"? I enjoyed WoW from back in vanilla from day 1, and SWTOR (much better story), ESO, etc. What lalacatgirl copium are these people huffing? I also love FF7, 8, and 10. This is garbage compared to those. It's like this game is supported by a cult of people with low standards and bad taste.

Oh boy arent we in for a treat xD RR is so boring i remember nothing from it save for quests leading to HW. Patch quests were literally so boring i dropped the game for couple months, then came back, done all sidequests (and read them all) before slowly making my way thru them. So yeaaahhh brace yourself. That being said HW was so worth it. I wish i could beat it for the first time again, cant wait till you get there :D
