Wait a minute… Tataru is an omnicrafter. I’ve made a theory before that Crafting, specifically Synthesis, is an unrefined form of Ancient Creation Magic that requires raw materials and rituals (at least pretend you’re using a saw) in addition to a Concept (aka recipe in the log) and aether (aka crystals). *gasp* Could it be that Tataru’s Carbuncle is a true Creation?! She crafted a permanent being!

I would actually categorize Lyse as a Monk+ as she's learned or invented techniques that don't exist under either the Pugilist or Monk schools BUT at the end of Shadowbringers in the Monk storyline she did go on to "officially train" as a Monk which means that by the time we see her again in Shadowbringers she would definitely have that knowledge in her repertoire. Also (and this could certainly just be head-cannon), Lyse is WAY MORE CHILL when you see her again in Endwalker as opposed to how she was in both Stormblood and the little we see of her in Shadowbringers which could point to her simply being more centered after receiving training as a Monk.

Tataru can actually still summon her carbuncle but she still can't control it. During the auspices/four lords questline when she's helping you subdue Soroban, she summons a carbuncle during the fight. It immediately runs away. I'm all for giving Tataru levels of Ninja though. She spent a lot of time among the Doman refugees and not even Estenien could escape her.

I started healing fairly recently, like within the last eight months in earnest and actually knowing what I'm doing, and when I discovered that Urianger's job switches to Lithomancer for the 89 trial, I healed my first trial to watch him dps. It's fascinating how much the Scions' abilities change over time, like how Y'shtola used the black magic spells only in ShB, but once she starts regaining her conjurer status in Zot, she's started healing in trusts when you take damage. When you play as Thancred on ShB, all he has is GNB abilities, but in EW he has his rogue abilities back.

This has been incredibly encouraging for my own character writing, as there are certain groups of people in Roleplay communities that will try to shit on anything remotely out of the ordinary, and it's incredibly frustrating. Combining abilities and knowledge- honing one's personal craft and using the classes and jobs as something of a basis and foundation. We see plenty examples of similar things, even outside the Scions themselves-- Sadu is described as a Thaumaturge, but her abilities are way out there compared to what we've seen an ordinary Thaumaturge do.

Would be interesting to see if we could cross some moves with other jobs (A lot more than the crossjob thing, like idk giving a dark knight actual Inner Release/beserk), but even I don't want to think about the desgin/balancing hell that would be I do also want to believe that since job quests don't really exist past lvl 70 I like to think that 70+ moves are the WoL really trying to push their job and creating their own new moves

what is interesting about "cross job skills" is that for DoL and DoH, they once were filled with cross job skills. So it's not like the mechanism doesn't exist in the game. Same with current "job class" cross-skills. Such as "healer" "dps" and "tank" cross-class skills. They are not "duplicated" between the jobs. They are shared. Theoretically not much, mechanics wise in the programming itself, limits crossing skills except design choices. And I can see why, balance. Otherwise players would cherrypick like they did with crafting to build "the ultimate" combos. Which for crafting really wasn't a big deal. But players would quickly crunch the numbers and build a narrow list of "acceptable" builds that require cross-job skills and those who don't have them will be viewed as an "inferior" X, Y, or Z job. So I suppose I see the reason for limiting cross-jobbing. It's not really an issue for NPCs, but for players, it would be a dumpster fire.

I feel you're doing at least a slight disservice to G'raha by not pointing out that the bulk of that century on the First wasn't just spent perfecting his ability as a caster, but specifically Allaghan magics and technology. He's able to wield black mage equivalent magics that were developed by the predecessors to the Mhachi that we base our black magic on. (Presumably his healing magics likewise, I've never run him as a healer). To add on to that, Emet Selch comments that he is intimately familiar with everything the Crystal Tower -should- be capable of. In addition as a "sorcerer of eld" who Hythlodeus indicates was powerful even by Amourtine standards, he likely was familiar with the scope of Allaghan magic yet compliments G'raha on accomplishing a feat (inter-shard teleportation/summoning) that escaped even the Ascians. All of this doesn't even touch on G'raha pulling out the conjured sword and board and, on at least one occassion, using high level paladin skills with them. You could argue that he is magically immitating skills he's seen the WoL use before but even that level of improvisation can be no mean feat.

It's also worth noting that he didn't just gain the memories of his 100 years as the crystal exarch. He also spent decades or even centuries studying inside the crystal tower while he and the descendants of Noah and the Ironworks tried to figure out how to travel across the rift and through time. Couple that with having all the allagan research stored inside the crystal tower, and then 100 years in the first. And then we've seen how quickly he can learn spells when they manage to find a cure for tempering, and he only sees the details for a split second before the computer systems explode, yet he still was able to commit the spell to memory and successfully teach it to other people. He's clearly insanely talented when it comes to spellcrafting and has an almost photographic memory, so add those two together and he's able to perform all kinds of high level spells.

This is the kinda stuff I consider in roleplay. For example, my character is traditionally a Ninja. But I plan on, through some character development, adding archery to her skillset. This doesn't necessarily make her a Bard or member of the Archers' Guild. She'll learn it from her family, from the Mongo- **ahem** Xaela archers in the Azim Steppe. Of course I can't actually have half Ninja and half Archer skills in gameplay, only through magic of roleplaying. Wish you could mix and match though, sort of like GW2's weapon system.

Oh, this was a great video! There are some things that are wrong but I won't go into them, HOWEVER! Regarding Tataru's Carbuncle, there is a neat tidbit that was glossed over. One thing I could point out as a theory: the limitations of the jobs system can be explained in lore with the fact that our WoL only really ever uses tried and true techniques, honed to a certain point. They basically just have learning stats over 9000 meaning they can hone just about anything and be the literal best at it, provided they get the material to learn from it, like a teacher's knowledge(classes masters and job mentors) or the soul crystal(DRK and jobs that came out in SB and beyond, as you gain skills at lvl 50-70 instantly because in-game design reasons and in-lore discipline experience and such). You could assume by that logic they don't need to rely on their resourcefulness to be strong(even though they also are very good at it as an expert adventurer) and thus don't see the need to truly "multiclass"(or use abilities from classes outside what's currently equipped) as a consequence, instead devoting themself to only one discipline at a time to actually learn or make any abilities they have in game.
@Wanderingsage7
@Wanderingsage7 2 жыл бұрын
They also don't have constant hands on tutelage and years of study in any of the classes and jobs, baring personal back stories of course, so they basically have to go with what works with the abilities they don't get from job quests.
@Krescentwolf
@Krescentwolf 2 жыл бұрын
There is actually a small, but direct, refutation to the the idea that the WoL only uses knowledge imbued into the soul crystals... what you called 'tried and true' techniques. Specifically, the Dragoon's questline when you 'unlock' Battle Litany. That's because the WoL doesn't actually unlock the ability from the crystal, but literally CREATES the technique themselves from scratch. The lore in and around Job stones is always fascinating. XD Either way, the WoL is a classic case being a 'genius-of-all-trades.' And that it's actually just a game limitation that we don't combine techniques from jobs into a single whole. Actually... the fact that we had cross-class job skills earlier in the games life is basically proof that its a matter of story/gameplay segregation.
@TorManiak
@TorManiak 2 жыл бұрын
@@Krescentwolf Yeah, it's an exception, though it's one that kinda proves my point tbh. They don't really see the need for creating new abilities, and basically stick to what's already in soul crystals, so we don't see much "new" techniques created by the WoL. Basically all honing and very little creativity besides use of terrain and the use of weaving(weird how basically no one besides the WoL uses some form of it, but I guess it's more gameplay limitations rather than an actual unique thing they can do, lol. )
@Christopher-eq1rn
@Christopher-eq1rn 2 жыл бұрын
Ehh canonically any technique beyond level 70 is developed by the warrior of light (with the exception of sage and reaper) since in not one instance does the wol work with a teacher or draw from their job crystals. There are a few classes which are explicitly unique fighting styles developed from a combination of schools and adaptation as well (the wol's rendition of drg and mnk)

I want to mention some other ideas of the job system not being the end all be all: One of the ones that sticks out to me is that you if you go into the Coral Tower, the home of the Marauder's guild in Limsa, you'll find emblems for a class we don't get to play and a desk where someone's attempting to sign up to join that guild. That guild is the Musketeer's guild. While not common, we spot a few Musketeers throughout the game. Another one that jumps out to me is the beast tamers you battle against in Bozja. At time of posting, this is a type of class we simply do not get access to. But it's out there. It's an art that exists, and further more, can be taught and passed along.

This setting truly is a roleplayer's ideal, honestly. You can make just about any sort of character you want, if you can find the right justifications. It isn't even hard to make something unique but keep it down to earth, either. With the right blend of various magical inclinations, one could theoretically be capable of standing toe to toe with some of history's greatest mages, provided the aptitude. Hell, even the tools of the spellcasters in question aren't set in stone. I play a character who's largely Conjurer ++, but she's got a few, select arcanima spells kept on her person as utility. Instead of carrying a grimoire in one hand and a staff in the other, however, she sews the arcane patterns into silken ribbons, tying them to her staff. It's like a physical form of attuning spells, keeping what you have prepared for the day on your person and ready for use. It all just requires you think creatively within the setting!

I speculate that the soul crystals are crystalized memories of Azem to pass on to himself throughout the ages as the WoL. So he can use them when he needs them without having to relearn every combat style all over again, which could have taken many months or years to master. This also explains why the WoL has such a intense reaction from the Soul crystals, they are filled with his own memories imparted by his own soul. Even our WoL, is making brand new Jobs in the 7th Astral era. Machinist and Blue Mage are "yet to be carved with the record of past deeds". Something to consider.

not really, we already have a lore for the soul crystals, Synodic Scribe even made a video about it. they were made by the people that invented those jobs and inscribed their knowledge on those crystals, there are many of them floating around even though they are rare. also I'm fairly sure the Amaroutians didn't have a class, they were all classes at once, and they just developed their own magic without any restrains. meaning Azen's soulcrystal would be a "all-rounder" like graha, I think only Hythlodaeus had a different class, the Soulseer.

@@PowerfulSkeleton @Danilo Oliveira I'm not saying he sat down before he was sundered and made the Soul Crystals in anticipation. The WoL, and by extension Azem's sundered soul has appeared throughout history as he lives and dies, and made a mark each time. I believe Tenzen was one such life. In Shadowbringers and Endwalker, we learned about the metaphysics of the soul and its relationship with the sundering. We also learned about memories and how they are erased upon returning to the Aetherial sea. We know that the Soul Crystals are crystalized memories of the bearer "Of ages passed". Except for Machinist and Blue Mage, which are brand new soul crystals of THIS age. Of which we are doing exactly as I am saying, (in a very meta way). Thus I have come to the conclusion that the soul crystals that are in our possession are possibly the very same soul crystals that Azem has imparted memories upon when he lived as another, in another time. Imagine, Azem had lived as a Lalafell in the city of Mhach during the height of the War of the Magi. Would he have not had a Gem of Shattoto? They were very common for that age. Or Would he have not been a Summoner, during the 3rd Astral Era at the height of Summoning magic? I digress. This isn't even a novel concept. Go read, The Hero of a Thousand Faces, by Joseph Campbell. Like it or not the WoL IS the Hero archetype.

Hot take by me: Was kinda hoping you would say "Jobs help shape the person" or something along those lines, giving personality. Now to the hot take, I believe a person shapes the job itself too giving each other personality and a unique style of that job/class, adding and optimizing certain aspects. One could say class patches are a way of the WoL making their skillset more efficient
@vfaulkon
@vfaulkon 2 жыл бұрын
Side note I'd like to include just for the sake of thoroughness, and in case anyone is unaware: technically speaking, job crystals aren't required to learn a given job's techniques; they're often defined as crystals that store the experiences and memories of previous holders, so while they accelerate the speed at which a person learns said job and can hold knowledge lost to time if the crystal is old enough there's rarely anything in there that a person couldn't learn the hard way. In my opinion, this ALSO means that the WoL could potentially create some truly unique job abilities through a 'cross-pollination' of skills, given how many job crystals they've learned from and how they're starting to develop and refine their own techniques at this point... though how well future holders of said crystals could follow suit remains to be seen. After all, mastering one's inner beast as a Warrior is taxing enough - combining it with their own Darkside might create something terrifying powerful, but also nigh-impossible to control. It's another limitation of the game that every player's expression of their job is the same, because I would assume each person's individual character and experiences (like what optional side-content you've completed or what jobs you've learned) would affect their growth and result in at least some differences. Imagine a Monk's techniques influenced by the experiences of a Dancer, or a Paladin using Red Magic to imbue their blades with elemental power!

He mainly uses summoner spells but still keeps the machinist gear on him just in case, so if he runs out of mana or really gets backed into a corner...he's still got a gun and all sorts of other gadgets to help out It's a lot of fun thinking about what could be in the world of Eorzea as opposed to the game of ff14

It could also be interesting (if sufficient interesting info is available) to check out how the Ancients fit into and out of the job system, since they are from an era way before guilds even existed (I think it's safe to assume as much ?), with creation magic added into the mix, their unique abilities that sundered souls awakened to the Echo can recall, and Venat being another example of a character able to switch jobs at the snap of a finger. We've seen them time and time again store memories and abilities in crystals too, not unlike how job crystals work. For example, wouldn't the popular activity of creating familiars and other entities out of aether using creation magic fit into a summoner type of category ? Especially since Emet-Selch influenced the creation of the Allagan Empire, the civilization from which our summoners originate, and since it was the Ascians that taught the beast tribes the Primal summoning ritual to begin with. Another thing that intrigues me is how Venat has a Dancer job, using chakrams like our own dancers do, yet she has next to no knowledge of dynamis at that time, so her use of the dance has to be different from how the Kriegstanz and Totentanz concepts operate.

when you take them with you with the trust system they are all all-rounded, save for Hythlodaeus that is a soulseer, meaning the concept of classes may not even apply to them, they just use any and all abilities they learn, create or master throughout their immortal lives. I really do like how you explained that fact quite well. While the WoL is able to learn the jobs because they are Just So Special, they're LIMITED to the boiled down skills that are basically handed to them. Not counting the job skills handed to you as you progress past the 70 Job Quests' instructional period. Part of the fun of the lore and world of XIV is the fact that those blending of skills and experiences makes for, often, unique expressions of martial and magical prowess. The theoretical use of those skills in a manner that is not restricted to the defined Job styles is an ocean of possible papers and theories. That being said, I admit to having my own concept of mixing the Job Systems' style with the weapon/combat styles of the DMC games. But that paper is still being fleshed out and nowhere near ready for review. >..< Tataru Taru's Carbuncle still being out there is something I was not aware of... Perhaps she made adjustments to the original Carbuncle spell subconsciously to vastly improve it's efficiency? Or she jus has that deep a reserve of Aether the drain isn't noticeable? The way I've tackled jobs beyond the standard system is something like this: only one soul stone can be used at a time, but any number of jobs can be weaved together if the bearer is not reliant on the soulstone to use that job. For instance, if a character's backstory was serving as a samurai for years (ie: we never see Gosetsu use a stone), then pick up a soulstone for another job, after a learning period, the two styles could be incorporated together. Any of the 1-30 classes can work the same way, provided it doesn't interfere with essential mechanics (say...a DRK using a Marauder's axe is nontradional, but doable vs a Red Mage using a massive axe--where the much heavier weapon undermines what the red mage wants to do as is less reasonable).

This a fun dive into the expansive abilities we see the characters utilize! It would be interesting to see a follow-up to this with some of the other characters in the game. A couple off the top of my head: - Raubahn uses gladiator skills, but was a dual-blade wielder, and once we see him in combat, a lot of his aesthetics are fire-based, including a mechanic mimicking Ifrit's Nails in the Ishgard battle royale. - Sadu is a thaumaturge, but augments her spellcasting, both empowering and defending herself, with various automata/golems like the Khun Chuluu. Not quite an arcanist, but something more, since they operate independently and have access to other elements than we see her use in battle.

I kept the skills they used within the confines of the jobs I chose, but their skills are far more diverse. Hell, I wrote another chapter where my main guy hopped from weapon to weapon of several jobs and used skills based on those weapons. I had been away from this game for a while at this point, but I basically had him acting out the Shadowbringers trailer over the course of a grand adventure chapter. On Alphinaud having the potential to mix Academician and Sage, it could already be implied thanks to a piece of optional dialogue right after doing Labyrinthos: "If I intend to master these sage's armaments, that will mean learning to imbue them with the same aether that I poured into Moonstone and Obsidian." That means if he experiments with his magic more he'd be the ultimate shield healer. Also in 7.0, if Urianger does actually join the Warrior of Light, I wonder if he'd be able to be chosen as a healer and DPS in dungeons considering his abilities as a Lithomancer... but that's thinking in terms of gameplay.

Fun tidbit: If you look at Thancred during the the very early ARR sequences, he's using the Paladin moveset, so Gunbreaker probably wasn't all that difficult for him to pick up. He got firmly established in Rogue when they introduced Rogue/Ninja and Yugiri. Fun Tidbit 2: I had noticed Urianger's lithomancy and looked it up: It's essentially fortune telling with stones (as compared to Astro using cards), traced back to early people in the British Isles if I remember correctly. Dude is straight up chucking aether rocks at the boss LOL. That and him using spells like Death as an Astro means he definitely has some extra tricks that he picked up, maybe from Louisoix. With Moen, I think she was definitely self taught, or at least had the book knowledge. The quest giver in the Sage questline pretty much learned everything about Gladiator/Paladin from courses in Sharlayan so I can see other Sharlayans learning martial disciplines that way.

Bonus points alone for that 'Gets a new soul crystal for just sneezing the right way'. XD Though, from a lore standpoint, it could be thought of as we are sort of destined for these crystals to come our way/they are drawn to specific souls, or we are drawn to them and seek them out without active awareness. So looking at this, it would be reasonable to think that, given enough free time for study and experimentation, the WoL could also learn to cross the barriers between the jobs they have picked up and mix different elements of their skills, at least from a lore perspective. While the soul crystals provided a much-needed jumpstart for the WoL to tackle the immense challenges that would threaten the star's existence in a very pressingly short amount of time, more reason there would be machinations at work to have these crystals come into our possession, the fact is the WoL had the natural skills to make the most of the knowledge with which they were bestowed. Our characters could spend many more years in pursuit of their jobs and grow them even beyond the knowledge given by the soul crystals and their mentors, and with their talent for learning quickly and rediculous amounts of aether could one day create their own hybrid jobs as Y'stola and Louisoix did. Sadly, the game has to keep things in a set fashion for terms of gameplay, but kind of interesting to think about from a standpoint where we are not bound by the mechanics. My bard could eventually learn to work even more support spells and add healing to his repertoire through what he knows as a white mage. Or more defensive to himself and his allies thanks to also being a Dark Knight.

Maelwybb uses weapons that are simply not even usable for the WoL. and she's not the only one. there is also a lalafell in the thiefs guild questline using the same weapon - a pistol. one could ague that this is what later became the mashinist, _but_ ! there is still a crossed pistols-flagg right beside of the ones of axes on the marouders-guild hall. Maybe this is a forgotten relict from a time where every base class was planned to get _two_ jobs to choose from, like the arcanist with scholar and summoner. But for the context of this video, this is basicly a proof that there is much more going on beside every class or roll in the world. the same goes for Raubahn who formally wielding two sowrds - or his Son the Lalafell with a "twohander" without any darkknight skill.

The WoL has simply taken (several) shortcuts to power. The job stones are crutches - we can master the skills contained within, and use them effectively almost immediately, but only in the way they've been demonstrated. We've sacrificed flexibility for learning speed. By contrast, a "true" master would eventually learn equivalent strength, taking skills from different disciplines, but it might take them the better part of a lifetime to do so. I do wish we could blend classes together with more cross-class abilities, but it would be hell to balance.

Explain very little about jobs like Blu mage and Machinist. Fun fact, Minphilia is considered a gladiator and does things, novel concept I know, in a side game which is likely noncanon but still. This lesson kind of revs my brain to what will happen when Alisae starts tinkering with Red magic now that she has the time. (Not to mention all the things the WoL will get up to with further tinkering of job abilities.) Alisae can conjure blades, at risk but still, has great skills with the magic side of red mage (according to the mentor, more than her blade work) and the rare academic capability of not particularly caring what others say is possible or not, she'll do it anyway.

With your research I do double down on saying allow the multiclassing & just make enemies harder. The players could just be regular adventurers without the echo & soul stones bolstering them.. Tataru weaves both threads & either in HQ patterns]]

Balancing is always a game of numbers. Unless you can master those it's a literal nightmare.

You forgot to mention Urianger used an Astrolabe as an Arcanist which is a Thaumaturge/Black Mage weapon this is reference to the original concept for Arcanist that was planned for 1.0 where they used Mechanical Staves as their weapons. He also summons an Amber Carbuncle which according to the lore book only he knows how to do because formula is so complicated.

Imagine the godlike power if a Monk, who was also a master of Black Mage and White Mage, were able to essentially combine all three under Monk's role? That Monk would be dam near unstoppable, lol!

After watching this and remembering the Shadowbringers preview trailer, I actually wonder how does the WoL canonically fight, considering that in the trailer he was able to switch jobs mid combat almost seamlessly

Since the expansion trailers aren't canon we can safely say the WoL doesn't switch jobs mid fight over and over at the very least.
