I had a bit of a theory. It's a little long: Solution 9 may come from another shard (a solution requires a problem) where they were far more advanced than the source. The civilizations of the source have been reset every 1500 years or so but another shard would have had millennia of time to develop. What if an advanced world was able to not only detect the other worlds but detect an upcoming rejoining. Unlike the evil act that Sharlayan chose, people were informed and multiple plans were enacted to survive the rejoining by riding it out. Understanding that they wouldn't be able to jump the rift with their bodies intact, they put their entire civilization's souls into stasis and now the city is waiting to rejoin the world when the source catches up in technology. Notice that Emet-Selch during his spoilercast specifically said plural "cities" of gold. Maybe another nearby city was solution 8 and they didn't store their souls so only the city made the trip. Now solution 9 may have a population of keepers (robots? Genomes?) waiting to awaken the souls of the population. This does remind be a lot of Terra in FF9. Another shard would have its own faiths and gods, so therefore its own primals. The creature the people of the southern continent call Valigarmanda may be a primal from the other shard, summoned to protect the city. It's possible that they may have their own name for him, Tritoch. The lightning aspect on the city and primal line up. Maybe 80 years ago when Gulool Ja Ja was taking power, he encountered them. He's sending the contenders to encounter Valigarmanda as a clever way to introduce them to their hidden neighbors to the north.

I love both how clearly you distinguish when talking about past games vs tinfoil-hatting, and how well you describe concept, a good balance of descriptive enough without going too rambly or overly wordy. I've had some thoughts about the purple corruption that we see in that Urqopacha dungeon and the various creatures, and it goes back to what I think is pretty strong foreshadowing in the 6.x patches. Purple is strongly associated with the lightning element in XIV, and the fact is that we've seen very similar purple crystal corruption on a creature very recently: the second boss of the Aetherfont in 6.4, who happens to be guarding the entrance to an extremely rich natural font of aether (ceruleum?) and uses a variety of lightning based attacks. This is a theme that has actually been going since 6.3, which took us into a ceruleum deposit deep beneath the mountains of Lapis Manalis, and 6.55 had us go back to the Aetherfont and that very same boss arena, almost as if to draw further attention to it. We already know ceruleum is going to play a big part in the Dawntrail story as its extraction has led to major recent changes in Shaaloani to the north of Tuliyollal, and it seems like that ceruleum is being shipped via train to Heritage Found. Heritage Found, which is likely where Solution 9 is located, is overwhelmed with lightning-aspected aether and is very very purple, and we see that same purple throughout the city in Solution 9. What's interesting is that these instances of extreme overaspecting to lightning seem very natural in Yok Tural and very unnatural in Xak Tural. Also, regarding the shape atop the totem and how it relates to Tuliyollal, I'd like to point out that on the new world map if you look closely you will see this exact same shape is perched at the top of Solution Nine as well.

Lots to think about going into Dawntrail! I’ve been watching your MSQ VODs these past several months (just started StB 31) and, as someone who isn’t that good at lore stuff and theorycrafting, I’ve learned so much from your playthrough by simply hearing you talk through all of your ideas and corkboards and seeing how you pay so much attention to the smallest details. I’m even more excited for Dawntrail now because I feel like I’ll get more enjoyment out of the story than I would if I was a more passive observer. So thanks Endy! Can’t wait for you to experience your first FFXIV expansion at launch, it’s sure to be a wild ride!

I wonder if "The Giants" might also cover as a euphemism for ancients. Not actual ancients who survived the sundering, but perhaps a memory of them, and their size, hazy as only Giants. I have long wondered if the city across the sea where the First Final Days started wasn't going to turn into an analogue for Zanarkand. Perhaps it was just another way that something from that era found a way to survive, perhaps hoping to save themselves from the ravages of the Final Days before Amarout found a solution.

My wild theory that's more than likely entirely wrong: Solution 9 is a simulation. The "solution" being to avoid impending calamity by "storing" themselves in a simulation until such a time as the world is safe. Given a similar situation regarding the Terrans in Final Fantasy IX, I expect some form of Garland-adjacent character to be their caretaker. However, in a subversion of the source material this theory draws from, I predict that the raid series, The Arcadion, will see this Garland-esque character seek out the Warrior of Light's aid. Something in the simulation is broken. A civil war within, a virus, a general breakdown... who knows. With our reputation preceding us, we'll be asked to delve deep into the heart of Solution 9's infrastructure to save the lives of the civilization stored within. That said, fantastic video. I had been so focused on S9 theories (and possible FFIX connections) that I hadn't even considered the main focus of the rite of succession.

FWIW, Solution 9 will be the topic of the next video pending the reception to this one. It's by far the biggest "?" from what we've been shown thus far, and I will say I do like your theory! I had my own Matrix-esque idea - it's been fun to speculate alongside everyone given how much of an unknown the expansion is for us going into it.

So much good cork! A couple things that struck me. While Hydaelyn filled the role of Altana (more or less) in XIV, Altana's priestesses among the ancient Kuluu people of Vana'diel were the Dawn Maidens, and thwarted the plan of the Zilart to open the Gate of the Gods. We know from the upcoming alliance raid that some sort of connection will be found with Vana'diel, the world of FFXI. We know Vana'diel is not a Shard of the Source, but rather a completely separate reality, from which two travelers have made it to Eitherys in the past, Shantoto, a powerful tarutaru (lalafell) black mage and Iroha, a hume (hyur) samurai who wields a naginata imbued with the power of the Phoenix of Vana'diel. While Shantoto quickly made her way home, Iroha remains stuck in Eitherys. In FFXI, she was the heroine of the Rhapsodies of Vana'diel storyline, the last "MSQ" line that served to connect all the previous expansions together. She is a time traveler, daughter of Vana'diel's Tenzen, and future student of the Player, who uses the power of Phoenix to return to the past to warn the Player of an impending calamity (which Endwalker echoes, as both are caused by the death of the god of Darkness). When she tries to return to her time, the Player in Vana'diel thinks all goes well, but the WoL in Eitherys knows she actually somehow crossed into a different reality rather than her own time (perhaps because her own time no longer existed because the calamity was averted). I expect Iroha to be heavily involved in the alliance raids, and possibly have some connection to the MSQ as well. The question then is how closely tied to the MSQ the alliance raids will be. Southern Tural draws heavily on some aspects of FFXI's Treasures of Aht Urghan, but is also geographically where Seekers of Adoulin took place. In Seekers, the land is protected by 7 great spirit beasts. While none parallel Valigarmanda, we know that Southern Tural also draws heavily on the real world South America for inspiration, and Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent, is a major figure in South American lore. So it's possible that the South Tural arc may draw on elements of FFXI, and the North Tural draw on elements of FFIX, as people have already pointed out. But it's possible that XI's influence might extend to the North, as in Seekers, the land was once home to a different type of ancient people that the Kuluu and the Zilart; the mysterious builders of Ra'Kaznar a strange labyrinth of unique purple and blue colored architecture, festooned with geometric patterns. Of course DT could just draw names and visual inspiration from older FFs, as it has over it's life, with references just being easter eggs for fans of the olders FFs, and we shouldn't think too much about them!

Ah I was hoping you'd weigh in with some FF11 lore! I did quite a bit of digging using what I could access via KZbin and companion sites (such as ffxicyclopedia) so I couldn't be as thorough; but I did come upon the Dawn Maidens, as well as how Tavnazia preached the word of Altana in a way that was significantly different to the rest of the world. The natural stone arch that Tavnazia was buiilt beneath felt somewhat evocative of the circular motifs we've seen in Dawntrail (the logo, Eliminator's crown, to name a couple) and wondered if the fabled Golden City might be similar to Tavnazia in that it had become an overgrown ruin. I'm sure you can elaborate further, but Gulool Ja Ja being prominent in Aht Urhgan made me wonder if there'd be further tie-ins with Dawntrail, so I'm stoked to see y ou say there's further correlations between Yok Tural and what was in that expansion pack. Mamook was actually referenced in FF14's first Encylopedia Eorzea as being another name for the New World, but my *guess* is that's been retconned as "Tural", but figured you might enjoy that tidbit.

@@EndyD20 I expect we'll find that Mamook is the name of the traditional Mamool Ja lands in Tural, which would square that circle. The giants (Trolls in FFXI) are also from Treasures of Aht Urghan, while the Moblins are from Chains of Promathia, but have a couple of significant roles in in Aht Urghan. Of course, we also have the short merchant people from FFX, so who knows what else they may surprise us with! Though as a clarification, Tavnazia is not on a different continent from the main lands of FFXI; it's an peninsula that was cut off from the mainland due to a super weapon used during the Crystal War. So I wouldn't look to it for connections to Dawn Trail.

He mentions briefly before he leaves Sharlayan something along the lines of finally going back to face his destiny so I’m thinking he went back, found out what was going on, and chose to help his sister instead of fighting.
