FFXIV Lore- What it Means to be a Reaper

Not every job in Final Fantasy 14 is about upholding justice and honor. Some of them walk dark paths with dangerous ends. So I suppose we should be glad they're on our side, shouldn't we? Join me as we discuss the history and powers that make Reaper what it is. I'm glad to finally get back to making job content, so I hope this is a great way to begin the What it Means series again!

If you want every little nod in the game regarding class with the MSQ. ARR 1-30 - Archer ARR 1-50 up to start of HW - Warrior HW - Dragoon Post HW - Dark Knight Pre StB and all parts in Ala Mhigo - Monk All Kugane area parts of StB and post StB - Samurai Pre ShB - Warrior ShB - Warrior and Dark Knight both get nods sprinkled through Post ShB Warrior EW when you are around Sharlayan - Sage, yes the only time a caster truly gets the nod as part of the MSQ so far Sprinkled throughout all of EW - Paladin Post EW - Paladin and Reaper Special mention, during the Illsabard Contingent gathering you will get nods as several classes if you talk to the NPCs gathered around you as a Scholar, Black Mage, Red Mage, Warrior, and Monk. This is due to your mentor or people you helped in the story of the class being members of the contingent. However these interactions are not part of the MSQ itself and require you to talk to the NPC's on your own before continuing the story. Canonically when the Scions are all together the WoL is a tank. This is why Thancred is the only other tank member of the group and G'raha keeps a staff in his hand/on his back in all the cutscenes regardless of if you have him set to tank or not. G'raha is a caster first and foremost but he uses magic to pretend to be a paladin for dungeons just so you aren't SOL in areas Thancred isn't around if you aren't comfortable tanking.

I made it cannon Lore that My WoL was so damaged by the Power of Light that their soul was made unstable. They sought out a means of balancing their Aether so they joined a Pact with a voidsent who helped quell the stagnation of their soul. The voidsent they are tied to is very kind though very greedy for aether so Rei'tan goes on hunts constantly to quell their shared hunger as a result. Anyway just wanted to say that lil bit of character lore. Love the video~ looking forward to more stuff from ya in the future, Scribe~

Really wish we knew more about the WoL's Avatar. Yoshi P gave some interesting info in an interview with Zepla prior to Endwalker. In the interview she asked about the nature of Reaper, and inquired about whether or not it was evil, since Zenos was a Reaper, he also said some cryptic lines and asked her to think about "What kind of Voidsent would join a pact with the WoL"

I wish the reaper quests leaned deeper into the dark and voidsent part of the job instead of just hanging with some random garlean family to pursue some random voidsent guy. Like they just give you a contract with a voidsent and that's it, and then you're just pursuing the guy who has the same job as you but is evil like 70% of other jobs' quests. Having some kind of conflict with the voidsent and trying to tame it throughout the quests would have been much more cooler imo, like a good part of the reaper lore is about the struggle of maintaining balance as to not get overwhelmed by the voidsent and they did barely anything with that concept. The only thing we got about that was Orcus but we as a player never ever face any complication regarding our pact with the voidsent. Anyway, I just hope we one day get job quests as good as DRK's, and reaper felt like it could have filled that void.

Look at the level you unlock the job at. By that point you are already known as a godslayer. Countless voidsent have already died by your hands. The struggle would barely exist because you also have to realize what kind of voidsent would actually sign a pact with the WoL. They are either terrified of the WoL, want to kill them, or the WoL brings out memories of before the fall and thus makes them feel as though they want to fight to preserve something. The WoL's soul is also very dense and powerful. A voidsent trying to merge with you has to be careful of not being absorbed by the WoL's soul. Add in the fact the WoL has had a rejoining of the shards with Ardbert (who was also a shard of Azem) making the WoL's soul even stronger. Basically...that kind of struggle is non-existant for the WoL due to all of the circumstances. The reason why the Dark Knight struggles is due to where they are in the story when you unlock it and thus when the story for the class happens. To experience that struggle you would have to not have Venat's blessing as well. Her blessing literally protects the WoL's aether and soul. The blessing continues even after her death as well. She also teaches the WoL how to use the blessing better. The WoL sadly cannot give the blessing though due to it requiring creation magic they do not possess.

I really don't like dark/demon pact type classes, so that may be flavoring my viewpoint, but given Yoshi P's insistence the WoL isn't evil (hence why we will never get Necromancer as a Job), I think it might hold some truth. My thinking is more that this is Azem's 13th soul shard. So in the WoL's case, it's an imperfect Rejoining, similar to what Ardbert offered us. But while he offered himself freely to merge with us and release his memories to the Lifestream, our Void counterpart CAN'T do that since the Void doesn't allow him/her to die. So through both pity and a mutual desire, we offer them some of our Aether and some of the non-soul Aether of those we slay (the molecular energy of their bodies or their lingering MP when they die) to it so it can be stronger in its Domain in the Void, wherever that is, as well as sustain its existence and be sated and not starving for energy all the time. In return, it gives us some power, and when we attune closest, an imperfect, but temporary, rejoining. But unlike many hosts, we're still in control even when merged. Your character doesn't go autopilot for 10 seconds, YOU still enter the buttons, which is my mental way of thinking that the WoL is still in control, just as we were when Rejoined with Ardbert. In a strict sense, when you're Enshrouded, you are imperfectly one time more Rejoined...for that duration. And remember, the people of the Void aren't "demons", they're still people. Mutated and consumed by Darkness, a hunger from 10,000+ years of not having much to eat and a constant fear of being trapped in the mind soul maelstrom of another with any other souls consumed should they be eaten by another (until that other is defeated and they are released) in a state of "eat or be absorbed for a long while of suffering as a prisoner in someone else's mind". But like Humans fighting over limited resources in war, they aren't demons so much as they are desperate. A Voidsent aligned with your own soul that you can provide Aether to isn't necessarily evil, especially with the WoL's bright soul and MP reserves to feed it, just as Zero wasn't evil, she was just hungry and transactional, so to speak.

I have a theory that reapers had limited ability to use magic to facilitate pact making. The reason I think this is in the Zenos short story it's revealed he gained limited ability to use magic by embedding a crystal in his hand. In theory some of the harvested aether could recharge this crystal.

Unfortunately the plot explains that Zenos didn't even make a pact - he had Fandaniel forcibly bind a voidsent to him, and the result twisted the voidsent's body.

This is kind of incorrect assumptions though too - Zenos didn't "gain" the limited ability to use magic, Garleans can just do that; their biology prevents effective channeling of magic, it doesn't prevent them from channeling aether - everyone can just do that, most races are just fundamentally suited for it - but it is reckless and dangerous because that's like... embedding magnesium into your palm to light firewood. It could cause serious bodily harm, and the short story mentions that clearly. That said, that's why Stormblood Zenos had that massive metal drum to hold multiple katanas - it was actually an aetheric conditioner iirc, imbuing the katanas with the aether necessary for Zenos to use the Unyielding Blade style for a number of charges before needing to cycle them out. The loss of it and his collection of katanas was part of why he moved onto Reaper - boredom was the other.

Actaully, I feel DRKs are just Ishgardian take on the same philosophy. You are there to dish out the pain and punishment to all those you deem deserving, laws and customs of the land be damned. Reapers were assassins of enemies within and without, and DRKs follow the same philosophy, knights with no loyalty to banner beyond their own moral code.

Enemies within and without, all to protect what their own sense of justice tells them - in that regard, Lemures (from which Reapers come) and Dark Knights have some parallels.

Great video as always! Gotta say, I hate the assassin angle they too with the Reaper. If they wanted to go that way, they should have ads them the second Scouting armor Job instead of Maiming. I would have preferred if they were the frontline fighters of old Garlemald, accomplishing the same goal of demoralizing the enemy by sowing terror and chaos in battle.

The problem with that is that the other Garleans just flat-out didn't want them around. Especially the officers of the military. There's a reason why our trainer had to flee Garlemald, after all. Especially since it went against the very philosophy that Solus had founded the Empire on.

Reapers lore is fantastic. I wish the newer jobs got more than just 5 missions to tell their story. Im sorry for always having off topic questions, but if you have the time i was hoping you might help explain to me if there is an in lore reason for why the primals are so different in the eden raids? I get that theyre based on WoLs memory but i don't understand how that turns Titan into a transformer. Ive tried researching this on my own but all i can find are peiole making jokes saying its because WoL has brain damage. I also never really understood wha Ryne was hoping to accomplish by channeling Shiva. I get that Ysayle did that but i dont get how she made a difference really, unless she was hoping she couid just force shiva to not fight?

The characters theorize that Eden itself is changing the primals, since the WoL is technically using Eden as a conduit for the summoning ritual. As for Ryne... the reason she gave is that she wanted to teach Eden how to produce the elementally aspected aether itself, in case something happens to her. Personally... I think she was doing that 15 year old thing of "That sounds really cool, and I'm sure I've got all the advantages I need to control the primal since I'm light-aspected and have the Blessing of Hydaelyn, and the primal is ice-aspected". And then after transforming and losing control, she probably remembered that we have a much stronger Blessing and we *still* almost got crushed underneath the light-aspected aether we were carrying.

@@Uchizumaki1 I couldn't agree more man, I guess gunbreaker got bozja and reaper got lapis manalis but that's barely nothing compares to what the stormblood and older jobs got. Especially since both the shadowbringers and Endwalker jobs essentially got the same story. Gnb and dnc travelled around each starting city before confronting their villain of the week, rpr and sge both dealt with tracking down a master of the job that went evil after allying ourselves with someone with connections to that evil master that initially seemed like a bad guy themselves.

I role play my character as someone who can't use aether in just about any capacity. This naturally rules out most jobs, with the exception of jobs that rely more on dynamis, like (implicitly) Warrior and Dancer, but Reaper offers a loophole for him. Ultimately I played him like a dnd warlock. In exchange for servitude and an oath to cause death, he has the power of his avatar no matter what job he's doing.

Its also interesting because in the Reaper oGCD that cost Soul Gauge there is always the text "Summon your avatar". Btw interesting fun fact Reaper is the only job in the game with "Spell" GCDs that dont use MP Patch 6.4-5 Spoiler 12:00 The fact that the WoL become a reaper even if his Shard on the 13th the _real_ Golbez is trapped forever proof the theory wrong.

A relatively new player here(a month by now), and there's one thing about the reaper roleplay fantasy that has been nagging on my mind and that's why would anyone with the ability to manipulate aether ever make a pact with a voidsent? It seems recklessly stupid. (Then again i might've just not given the class time to cook as i havent done any of their class job or msq past stormblood) Sure the option to roleplay as a character with the inability to manipulate aether due to whatever reason is always on the table. but that would also mean that every other job available is out of the question as they all make use of aether in one way or another I will say though i adore the visuals and theme.

Reapers were common farmers who took up their weapons to fight against those that will harm their fellow men from outside or even inside? How is that not a noble calling? And if every reaper is just out for blood would the majority not already have been devoured by their voidsent? The reaper had even a full unit in the Garlean army of which the public must have known about. It was only later after Solus was almost assassinated by one of them that they were outlawed.

After watching this video its really weird that reaper shares gear with dragoon and how are they supposed to be assassins with their giant scythes and extremely flashy abilities?

Because you think of all assassins as dexterous rogues rather than letting the concept expand in your mind. Technically speaking, any killer who targets a high-profile and/or specific target is an assassin, no matter what method they use.

It's very odd you described their armor as lighter and flexible. Not because you're wrong, but rather, square enix deciding to give it that lore, but then also give it maiming armor. No wonder it feels so hard to fuckin glam for lol

I cant get on board with the whole Avatars are your 13th shard stuff. That would be wayyyyy too big of a plot element to give to players on an OPTIONAL element of gameplay. Not only that, but Zero and Zenos could barely be more unalike each other. Hell I think even WoL has more in common with Zenos than Zero did. Finally, hardly any voidsent are simply the 13th shard any more. They literally eat and merge with each other, combining their whole essence with another to become sometimes relatively new. And they do that over and over and over, resulting in voidsent that can only be described as an amalgamation of many souls. One could argue this is what gives credence to the 13th shard theory, since the 13th shard could be amalgamated into the remaining voidsent. Except, Zero contradicts this again, because she's outright stated that she's never merged with any other voidsent soul, further distinguishing herself from Zenos. tldr; the 13th shard is your avatar theory is beyond far-fetched. edit: oh and then there's the far more credible ( I think ) evidence behind OG Golbez being the 13th shard of Azem.

That's probably why the writers kept it ambiguous. "Maybe it's your 13th shard, maybe it's not. Who knows? We haven't tested it."

It's worth noting that Zero did not enter a pact with Zenos. She was forcibly bound to him by Fandaniel. The only way he could achieve harmony with her would be through complete and total subjugation, making her more an extension of his will than a true partner. And tbh, I'm completely surprised she took it as well as she did.

To both of you, i played XI in American inception. What im saying is it would've been a good idea to utilize scythe with DRK as an option. Being condescending like you created the game and are offended is at most childish.

@@Ameion I wasn't being condescending, I pointed out that game as an option because there's no knowing if you had or had not played it. And I feel like my point stands that it is not a good idea in this game to have multiple weapon choices, because you will just be expected to pick the one that does the most damage and not actually get to choose what you want. Otherwise you can buy a scythe glam in the mogstation and at least have it your way in the aesthetic manner.
