Red Magic is the school of heroes, make no mistake. Gallant and tireless, their brilliant garb serves as a beacon to any and all who catch sight of it - and you can't help but do so with the way they fly about the battlefield. A Red Mage is ever ready to give answer to oppressors and dark powers not only because of their creed or philosophy, but because the discipline only ever appealed to those of such a mindset in the first place. To don that vermilion cloak is to make yourself seen by friend and foe alike - as protector and challenger, as magician and warrior, as a champion bold and true.

I feel like it's under appreciated because, at first glance, it doesn't seem like there's a lot. Remember coming over from WoW to FFXIV in around 2014 or so (whatever patch was just before NIN was released), and there seemed to be far less lore by comparison. Where WoW's lore has 10,000+ years of history on Azeroth, and centuries (or millennia...) on Draenor as well, FFXIV's lore seemed to be - note SEEMED at first - mainly "here are three cities, there's a big bad Evil Empire off somewhere, and a big cataclysm happened 5 years ago. Now go save the world or whatever!" ...if all you did in ARR was the MSQ, this was mostly the story you were presented with, with a few toes dipping in places like Wanderer's Palace, Ampador, and Qarn. But if you start doing Job questlines, Crafter questlines, sidequests, reading some of 1.X's random side quests, and obviously, finish the later expansions (most notably Shadowbringers), you see that the world has lore spanning 6 ages, each of which lasted for 1500-3000 years (rough ballpark) between them. For example, I knew from the SCH and WHM blurbs that there was once a nation of White Mages (Ampador) and once a nation of Scholars (Nym), but I didn't realize that they were around (along with Mhach - "Mhach, Mhach, beware the dark; keep away or lose your heart...THAT Mhach?!" - the nation of Black Mages turned Void Mages). While I recognized Mhach and Ampador were contemporaries, culminating in the War of the Magi and the 6th (or was it 5th?) calamity of Water, I did NOT realize until the SB (I think it was) SCH quests that Nym was also contemporary with them. Wherever you go to Ampador and learn that the Ampadori tried (and succeeded in a few cases) of kidnapping SCH's so they could try to torture the secrets of their unusual brand of healing magics from them, including Lilac's Job stone. Indeed, you learn more about the ancient nation of White Mages in the SCH Job quests than in the WHM ones - the WHM ones are...imo, generally somewhat lacking as far as lore goes, it's always trying to seal one taint or another in the forests. Adding in SMN, and then especially doing MSQs from later, you start learning a lot of the ubiquitous Allagans, which pop up basically everywhere and were from the...3rd? 4th? I think it's 4th...age. You learn a lot about them over time, but much came after ARR, of course. HW added quite a bit just by itself. And this is before getting into Red Magic, Beli'dah, the Ascians, Eureka, and so on. And they've only fleshed things out more since then. And I'm sure there's even more big reveals coming in Endwalker - I'm hyped, but who isn't at this point? :D FFXIV is a game with DECEPTIVELY shallow seeming lore that, when you actually start digging, becomes deeper and deeper, until you realize that there was a whole mountain of lore complete with its own cave system there all along, you just somehow didn't see it. But I think this is why the lore is under appreciated. People see a somewhat casual MMO with pretty graphics that is pretty chill to play at a relaxed pace, but when you start pealing back those surface layers and looking underneath, THAT'S when you find the deep and interesting lore.

Also you can pretty much pick up any glam, paint it red, and you have an actual working Red Mage outfit.

2:00 - I need to go back and check, but I'm curious: For the cutscenes where a healer gets a special scene (where they get to take part in healing, "What are you standing around for?! Well? You're a HEALER, aren't you?!") if RDM's also get the healing scene or the DPS one? Either way, the ability to cure/raise AND be a full time DPS is absolutely amazing. I hate DPSing in general, but if I do, I have to go SMN or RDM. I just can't stand the idea of healers being down and that equaling an automatic wipe. If only there was a Vermilion Medica... I wonder, lorewise, if the balance of Mana is to reflect a desire to not unbalance the world's Aether again. That is, even using one's own Aether, what caused the calamity (well, and also the Ascians on one of the other Shards...) was using many aspects of magic, but not using Water much. This led to Water being too abundant, and when the Shard collapsed into the Source, leading to the Calamity of the flood. I've never heard that mentioned, but I wonder... Though I most note, there is a RDM master (who gets tempered) and apprentice (who saves him) in Bozja. The second Bozja zone has, I believe, three FATE's related to their storyline. Love this series so far from what I've seen of it here. I kinda wonder what the history of Arcanism is. I know Thamaturgy is a form of Black Magic that also uses the limit of only one's own Aether (and Conjury White Magic, though in that case, with the Elementals' blessing...slash/Aether?) But Arcanism is different, using glyphs and sacred geometry instead. They seem to be literal Mathmagicians, though I'm not 100% certain. ...and, it's notable that Ninjutsu functions on a similar premise, using hand signs to mimic this magical geometry. I THINK, anyway. I believe that's why when you futz up your Ninjutsu, you end up with discount Carbuncle sitting on your head. :D

Quite interesting! Just thinking as well about the VERsions of Black and White magic used by the Red Mages, it seems that the usual damage over time (or the lingering spells) Aero and Thunder seem to be more focused and precise rather than lingering, which probably meant that all the pain these spells wrought would be dealt at the briefest moment post-incantation. Also kind of noticed that while VERspells are flashy and such, these are very localised and seems to be concentrated in a smaller area (as compared to the vanilla schools' magicks, though that may change a tiny bit with EW changes on the finishers becoming AoE). Not sure if that is actually the case though and I would be glad if I'd be enlightened or corrected.
@SynodicScribe3 жыл бұрын
You're right. Red Magic is more condensed and precision based. Since they're using only their own aether, they need to make every spell count. Unlike the Black and White schools that can flood an area with magic by using ambient aether.

"A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one". This is the reason I leveled up as fast as I could, that phrase usually defines my playstyle in any game, I wanted this class so bad than in little more than two weeks I already was lvl 50, though now that I got to play it I can't help but think, isn't it a bit underwelming? Or at least not as the lore makes it look like. I was expecting that the physical "phase" would be the one building the mana to power up the spells (9:52) and maybe even setting "traps" by moving around the target while slashing around, but instead is the spells that powers up the physical phase, it makes it far more static that what I was expecting.

Dear Synodic Scribe my head recently hurts from 1 kind of lore that confuses me the most and overwhelmed me when I first started playing FFXIV and that is technology in FFXIV. We have swords, shiels, axes, medieval structures but on the other hand we have cyborgs, imperial bases with red LED lamps and alarms, flying ships, flying cyborgs, guns, rifles, cannons, etc... What confuses me here is why is there such a split in development, where does technology come from? I recently unlocked the machinist and levelled till 50 + did the questline and here we have even drones and a cyborg we can summon to fight alongside us. I know what I am about to ask will be a very difficult video to make and maybe take you eternity but is there any way you could make a video or documentary about technology in FFXIv, perhaps the whole of Final Fantasy. Especially as a new player this can be confusing too see 2 ages meet each other in 1 era. hahaha

The Crimson Duelists were taught Red Magic by the mages living in the mountains of Northern Eorzea. The Crimson Duelists might have fallen apart but the Red Mage order still exists as far as we know. As far as the weapons go, Red Mages learned how to weave melee into their style long before the Crimson Duelists. But it could be argued the Duelists took their Melee more seriously than the Red Mage order.

So THAT'S why there is Ver- in some of their spells, why they do jumps and flips, and do double casts.

So a red mage that abandons their moral casting and uses a combination of the expeditious casting of the red mage and the mana draining casting of the black mage would be a terrifying force.

So, I guess for RP, I could say an ancestor from back in the Water calamity ordeal trained up as a Red Mage and left his family a soul crystal that got handed down all the way to my RDM? Is that acceptable?

A small request. I would love to see a video on warriors. Why aren't they called berzerkers? Why do their eyes glow red? Its a simple job but there's gotta be something more to them then just swinging an axe around and shouting.

Fencing makes some sense as a martial art to pair with magecraft. It simply isn't as physically demanding as a broadsword.

I wonder if Cocobusi from the Thaumaturge questline could do Red Magic, since it's so aether efficient
@SynodicScribe2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, Cocobusi's deficiency prevents him from performing any real magic less he risk death. But you're right, even those without tons of natural talent can become decent Red Mages with tons of training and the right weapon.

@@SynodicScribe Do you think he could do smaller magic? Like, it would suck to not even be able to light a candle or something.
@SynodicScribe2 жыл бұрын
@@Samavanzi Look at it this way. If he did that, he'd likely be shortening his lifespan bit by bit until he died young. His body doesn't recover its natural pool of aether the way it should. Now you can see why he was so desperate and frustrated, unable to perform even minor spells while his brothers were high mages.

@@SynodicScribe Maybe some sort of therapy then? Like, whatever the monks do with their chakras to increase their aether-flow. It seems like *something* should help somewhere, even it isn't well known or terribly accessible.

@@Samavanzi He tried his whole life to "fix" this problem with no results. There are some limitations that simply can't be overcome. And yet, while not a powerful mage, he proved himself to be the most talented Alchemist in his family, concocting elixirs that interact with aether in ways some have never seen. The doors of magic are forever closed to him, but others will always remain open.

I can understand how red mages use only their own aether for black magic, making it more like thaumaturgy than black magic, but doesn't white magic inherently use ambient aether? I thought the whole essence of white magic and conjury was the use of ambient aether by using the power of the elementals? So how can red mages use white magic using only their own aether?
@SynodicScribe3 жыл бұрын
That's because it's not white magic, only Red Magic. The Black and White mages took bits and pieces of their crafts and Red Magic was the result. Something that wasn't as strong as either, but also not a threat to the user. As a Red Mage you're never casting Black and White magic, only Red.
@lucasvillasboas55623 жыл бұрын
@@SynodicScribe That makes sense, but what is the black and white mana that RDMs have to balance? I thought it just meant how much black or white magic they are using, but as you explained they use red magic not black and white. Does it just mean that they can't heal too much without damaging their enemies and vice-versa? The reason the "manas" have to be balanced is that an imbalance makes you aether starved right? If this is the case how does using both mana types (dealing damage and healing/protecting) spend less aether than just using one of them? Unlike the thaumaturge's astral and umbral states, neither lack nor white mana regen your aether, so why is balance more aether efficient than inbalance?
@SynodicScribe3 жыл бұрын
@@lucasvillasboas5562 Well that's more of an in game mechanic, not everything about the game is gonna have a lore explanation. Kinda like Black Mages having infinite MP, technically that contradicts the lore. haha But I tried to explain in the video that every spell they cast releases residual energy. The best way to explain it is that Red Mages are trying to recycle what power they can. Which is what the Mana Gauge is, you're collecting and storing strips of spent aether that has an Astral/Umbral charge to empower yourself later down the line. Which is why balance is important.

They study both schools of magic so much they've gone as far as recreating versions of the schools most destructive ambient aether magics and adapt them to be localized and only use personal aether to maximum efficiency. I hate when people refer to RDM in FFXIV as jack of all trades and master of none or imply they can't be as strong as the other mages. They are jack of all trades and master of all. Their limitations are not due to inability, they are due to restraint. The truly powerful man is the one who has power and knows not abuse it.
