To be honest, you came into WoW with a very FFXIV like mindset. While levelling it is not made like FFXIV, in a way that you complete all of the story while levelling, if that was still the case you would just have to go through 18 years of story and WoW was always more about the endgame gameplay. The way you can still get good levelling and narrative experience is by selecting Exile's reach, getting to level 10, going to Stormwind and selecing a Chromie timeline, which then starts for you a questline of your selected expansion. I think getting about through one expansions MSQ and mby some dungeons is enough to get you to max level. Sadly in the older expansions you cant quite tell whats MSQ and whats side quest as you cant see a difference. But yea WoW very much stands atop of the endgame three pillars of PvP, Raiding M+ and a bit of open world content. And levelling in a new expansion when it drops is also really enjoyable. If you have not experienced these then I am not saying you didnt try WoW, but you havent touched that which people the vast majority of people spend at least 90%+ of their gametime on. Personally, I used to spend 90% in just M+, then sometimes i raid or pvp or collect transmog/mounts, just because i liked M+ that much. if you want to get the narrative then the best part would be the Chronicles book series, which is like a short summary and introduction, you can watch Nobel, or if you really want to get it still all in game then you would have to make probably a few characters and select all the chromie timelines in their order.

I think one thing that you simply can't expect in WoW is any form of narrative throughline. Later expansions have a more intended MSQ-ish questline, but the way the level squishing is set up, you're only really intended as using it as a stepping stone to get caught up to everyone else. You're not so much entering this world as an active participant in its big story-pushing events, but more so a side character fighting a bunch of battles for a variety of reasons. Either you wanna just get stronger, or you wanna do stuff with friends, or you want to unlock a transmog piece that's so much more easily stored away for later use than FF14 could ever dream of having. You're *not* this chosen Warrior of Light, even when you're called Champion or what not, it's just a title to denote that you're just a strong dude. Hell, I would go so far as to say most player characters are not very *good* people considering the shady shit they get up to in random world quests and this game almost immediately escalating them to slaughtering quite sentient beings in mere minutes of spawning as a Level 1 newbie just because some guy in Paladin armor told them to when they're minding their own business. It's a really funny dissonance, in my opinion. At this point, one of my only really big complaints that remains is that I wish they let you stick with Chromie Time scaling for as long as you want, freely able to scale back your level once you hit 60 (since they upped it from 50). They KNOW how to Level Sync you, Timewalking dungeons literally do that exact thing, so I don't understand what's so hard about keeping you in a Chromie'd version of your chosen expansion for as long as you want. I'm paying for your game, it's my prerogative what content I want to do with that time. That, and they need to stop pretending every single player character has a deep friendship with the actual "main cast" of the story, because they're making incredibly wide-reaching assumptions at that point. This being my other complaint, I'll detail the time I did a Shadowlands story quest where it was "reading my memories" to come up with brief mind battles based on previous expansion fights and I loudly shouted "I only just started four months ago and this game is assuming I fought the Scourge? Why is it pulling this Destiny Taken King crap pretending I did content I never touched?" If you're going to have an MSQ in a game that doesn't force you to do it, *you make them all self-contained with no prior knowledge needed.* If Dragonflight randomly decides to tell my character "Thanks for helping out Pandaria a few years ago!" I'm going to lose my shit.
