Since when does "umbral" mean light? Am I forgetting something? I think if anything the ancient Allagan report blows the mystery of light vs dark aether wide open. Why would the Allagans use the word "umbral", literally meaning "shadow", to describe light aspected aether? Keep in mind the people of the First, afaik, didn't even USE the terms "astral" and "umbral". Why are we assuming they mean "umbral" when they refer to light? I'd like to posit another theory: Either the properties of these aspects of aether have changed over time due to the rejoinings, or they were never separate kinds of aether to begin with, and throughout history people have been inaccurately abstracting them into two distinct poles. I expect we're going to see something akin to one of those explanations in 6.0, and it will possibly be related to the cause of the Final Days/Starshower.
@EthysAsher3 жыл бұрын
Umbral does not mean Light. Light pulls aether towards passive polarity, a polarity which scholars on the Source historically refer to as "Umbral" because they did not entirely understand the effects of Light and Dark (and because the writers hadn't fleshed this out from the beginning). Vrandtic scholars literally conflate the passive pole with Light because they literally watched a flood of Light drag all aether into extreme passivity. So "Umbral" and "Light" are different metonyms in different worlds for the same phenomenon. There is no evidence that the way aetherial polarity works has changed over time or between shards -- if the difference between the semantic and aetherial definitions of Astral and Umbral is confusing, just refer to active vs passive instead.
@Hayseus7123 жыл бұрын
@@EthysAsher I appreciate you taking the time to write up this explanation! That said, I think the thing I'm most hung up on is this: if the people of the First could observe that the passive aether consuming their world was aspected toward light, and that property is and always has been the same on the Source, why would the Allagans have chosen such a clear misnomer to refer to it? It only makes sense if they had a fundamental misunderstanding of the nature of passive vs. active aether, and as (from what I understand) the most aetherotechnically advanced civilization in the Source's history, that just doesn't sit right with me. I mean, I'm sure there were things they didn't know in their time, but I have a hard time imagining they misconstrued something so fundamental as to assign a word meaning "shadow" to an aspect of aether that is observably light. I feel like there's more to this puzzle still.

@@Hayseus712 The Allag studied The Void to learn about magic, they saw the drained husk that was the 13th, devoid of Aether, and associated Darkness with Stagnation. The Allag were bad about not paying attention to the wider picture and a focusing on one specific thing, it seems.
