As someone who has competed in dota tourneys (local scenes and casual worldwide tourneys) it really is different. Both are tryhard asf but fgc feels more relaxed. Prize pools aren't the attraction for Riot and other more professionalized esports, salary is. Top players make millions a year in esports like LoL, CS, and Valorant from their orgs, more than any tournament winnings would. More money doesn't mean the FGC will lose its soul. Riot knows how to produce an esports with hype and get fans engaged, just look at League, it's the most well-loved esport in the entire world with bucketloads of great personalities and storylines, just like the FGC. I understand the fear of losing what makes the FGC special, and that is a VERY valid concern, don't get me wrong. It's just that more money and more professional production isn't incompatible with an authentic FGC, the two can definitely coexist.

Something I’d like to point out is the fact that the FGC lives on grass roots tournaments. We were built from the ground up and I personally believe that the FGC has become more than a bunch of people who play games but it’s own society in a way. Riot will make the game and the FGC will own it in the way that we will play the game, we will host tournaments, and we will make the money to keep us alive not riot, the people, the players will. (Unless they go the Nintendo route) but that would just kill the game. So I don’t see a reason to worry. The FGC is and always will be grass roots at it’s core.

Another thing to note about Riots money income, they have the ultimate safety net in the form of Tencent who owns all of Riot. If Riot is ever in hot water Tencent will always bail them out. It's why Riot has always been able to brute force their way into the competitive scene. Sadly this will be the same case with Project L and the FGC. The game just has to meet the standard and they'll just throw money at it none stop until it sticks around.

Tencent has been forking the bill for a lot of things since they purchased Riot. The stadiums where worlds takes place along with the effects used for stuff like KDA that's Tencent. Hell the insane global marketing, that's also Tencent. Riot pays the bills for the US based advertisement and certain US based events like the red carpet they had for Arcane in the US. They're swimming in money cause Tencent always has them covered. It's why they keep making insane overhauls to League each season for the sake of "spicing things up" cause they pay it out of pocket no problem. Riot manages League the game, Tencent takes care of everything else globally.

I don't think it is possible for "esports" to take over the FGC. There are always going to be things on a local level which could be large or small. I think it would be nice for their to be more things like the Tekken World Tour and Capcom's counterpart. That way it gives some players (and sponsors) something to care about and an actual scoring system for invitationals later. Riot will probably create something similar to that. The biggest issue with League's format is lets say me and my other 4 godlike friends can't really get the opportunity to even play on a big stage because I have to be recruited by a million dollar team that pays for their spot in the LCS or whatever they are calling it these days. Fighting game's cant really do that, besides things like Street Fighter League, which (if we take away the stupid ban format) is good fun and still has elements of the FGC while being a very formal setting. But SFL is not the only thing that happens year round, there is still plenty of competition. Starcraft II is something to look at with a good format which has a good mix of everything. They have WCS which is basically Tekken World Tour, very large open bracket tourneys, MLG used to have a circuit, the list goes on. For example there was a player that had no team (formerly he had one but after he was dropped he didn't have a team for a LONG time) won the World Championship unsponsored and also won the hardest tournament in the world the Global Starcraft League (Koreas open bracket, like 2 month long tournament, GSL is usually considered the most prestigious). It really felt like if you played hard enough you could get somewhere where a lot of these modern titles feel unattainable like LoL, CS, Dota, OW the list goes on. Yeah sure you can grind ladder, but then you have to be scouted like its high-school football or some shit. Basically what I am getting at is, Starcraft II which had a lot money dumped in it, with sponsors and all that non-sense, still kept it real and any online hero could be something with enough skill. Same goes for fighting games. If I show up at Evo and stomp everybody in open bracket play I can't be ignored. Not having a team or sponsor doesn't hold me back competitively at all. No one can really take that away from fighting games (or Starcraft).

There is a first person shooter game that imo is as competitive (if not more competitive) than most fighting games and has a pro scene arguably even more underground than most fighting games: Quake. The technicality is on par with alot of fighting games and it is super obvious when high skill gameplay is being shown (unlike league). Personally, I want a revival for the Quake scene, or at the very least, a highly competitive, 1v1 FPS game to become popular in esports scenes.

First of all: great essay. Maybe the best I saw/read/heared about what the release of Project L can bring. For me a amateurish-casual-esqe (yes I made up a word) Player, I believe das Project L could be one of the "best" things happening to the genre. NOT Because of Riot, but because most of the Competitive Games Riot releases are F2P. Even If I am not one of the highest level players or professional FGC Member, I do believe that there are 3 things a company should think of when making a fighting game - besides actual gameplay and roster. And those things are: 1. the netcode (I think GGST did show how required rollback is so, that should be checked) 2. crossplattform (yes I literally mean it. we should stop dividing the playerbase through plattforms) and 3. the price of the game. No I do not regred paying for fgs I own - most of the games feel good, look good, sound good and I love the time I have with them while playing - soooo money worth for me. BUT not all people think so, that's why I think Project L could be on of the "best" things happening, because Riot can (and I hope will) show the companies that you can make a good and successful fighting game even if it is f2p.

"I'm worried that Riot doesn't want to fit in with the FGC, but wants to Be the FGC" This right here is what i fear as well. Because of their sway and how much money they can throw at things, the others might need to step up their game, which they might not be able to afford. Then again... there are pros that play many fighting games at the same time for the prize pool. Though if what they are looking for is hording the cash and Riot puts out a cash pool combining a few tournaments from other games, then they might opt to aim for the bigger pool and thus, robbing their image from certain games and disappointing the fans, so even they might start looking in the direction of Project L. that's fair, everyone has different priorities and prefer different things. to help explain it though, I'll compare fighting games to pro wrestling. when you watch pro wrestling, you aren't watching it to analyze the strategy because you're watching it as much for the players themselves. many popular wrestlers are vibrant and distinct from each other, and this creates interesting dynamics for each fight. the entire experience of playing and watching a fighting game feels much more personal than esports because it's a solo sport. you don't fight with a team, you fight as a single player, and you don't fight against a team, you fight against a single opponent. while this may decrease some aspects of strategy involved with collaboration, it allows each player's skill and personality to shine, making the match (in my opinion) much more stylized and lively. even if some fighting games have strategy based on team composition (dbfz being the first one that comes to mind), the main focus of almost every fighting game is that head-to-head aspect of competition where one player is constantly trying to find the weaknesses of the other player, and vice versa. fighting games separate themselves from esports, and even solo esports, by creating an environment where fast-paced decisions and flashy advantage states showcase the inherent identity of the two players competing in each match. be it constant aggression, terrifying pressure, or calculated zoning, many people watch fighting game matches to watch the players, not the game.

@@Lilybun i agree, though i wasn't saying that fighting games and pro wrestling are one and the same. i was mainly trying to say that the same elements that make pro wrestling popular (i.e. personality and individuality) also give fighting games their unique charm among esports. you don't see as much of that charm in a football game, and you don't see as much of that charm in league either; the focus that fighting games and wrestling have on individuals and unique expression is what makes them so fun to watch for some people.

The grassroots scene you described for arcade fighting games existed for other genres too. StarCraft, CS and Quake/Painkiller, DotA etc all had completely organic competitive scenes that grew around internet cafes and lan parties on your dad's beige tax filing machine. the old BYOPC tournaments were just like EVO is now. What changed is the game publishers decided they wanted to own the communities I'm a way that the FGC wouldn't tolerate, but the internet-based PC games couldn't fight against. Riot is not a video game developer, they are an advertising platform and holdings company that buys developers. When LoL first came out, it was a crappy, shallow clone of DotA - a minimum viable product in search of micro transaction gold. When it became apparent that actual customers could not sustain the growth they wanted, they pivoted and became an event producer. The cost of running those tournaments for their crappy games is miniscule compared to the eyeballs and advertiser money they rake in. Project L will get its own curated tournaments, have brief commercial success as an advertising platform, and then fade away. All the real FGC has to do is keep existing, because the only way Riot fights is attrition.

I get the point of your video but there were a couple of things that just... Weren't correct. For one, League is the biggest, most profitable MOBA and its not even close. Their monthly users is significantly over 100 million and has been for almost a decade. This is even more true in the East, where LOL has been the #1 game on the Korean pccafe charts almost unbroken since its release and where China has multiple separate servers for its players because there are just too many. The prize pool is lower than Dota, but that's mostly because the money is distributed to franchised teams throughout the year as a steady paycheck rather than one lump sum. Also, if you were really looking for an origin point for eSports, you probably should have pointed to Quake. That was already an eSport in the 90s, and they pioneered the business model of selling eSports to PC Hardware manufacturers as sponsors. To be honest, this video feels kind of... Sloppy. Like, as a fan of both LOL eSports and FGC, I totally agree that there's a difference between the two. I also agree that it would be a shame for Riot to come in and kill the FGCs unique vibe. But you didn't give me a reason why that'd happen except that Riot is a big fish in the small pond of the FGC. But why would that destroy the rest of the FGC? Even if Riot do not adjust to fighting games at all, why wouldn't the rest of the FGC just keep on keeping on? I just dont feel like you really expressed a clear idea.

As for your last point, I beleive that if most top players had to choose they'd play the tournament with the big prize pool. If you haven't put more time into mobas, then any other person would feel lost when they see a championship dota2 or lol game. Because at the start, you really need to level up and gather resources in order to get stronger in order to win fights. It's pretty much the same as RTS games like Starcraft, C&C games, etc. There are times where lv 1 fights happen because of the strat they are currently using in the game. Fighting games on the other hand are really different because right off the bat, you dish out combos at your opponent. I feel like you overthink a little in some of these topics which I agree. But it's still not coming anytime soon so we can only wait and hope it would not be the case. And one other thing, most people really don't mind about those advertising things. In the past, I would sympathise with you. But after learning more about how businesses work since I'm a business student, it's actually a smart move having advertisers because they help pay not just for the players, but also the staff and devs there in the company. So comparing dota2 and lol in terms of how they look for funding, it's really just how they implemented their financing plans. And dota2 obviously also have sponsors since they are still a company and they also need funding. Mercedez-benz was a sponsor in 2020. So unless there is something illegal behind, all forms of funding should be accepted. Overall, I just hope Riot can create a healthy relationship with the fgc and foster a healthy competition with other fighting games.

I just got into Strive and found my way to your channel (and honestly I blame your videos for keeping me as obsessed with the game as I currently am), but as someone from a League/Val background, specifically with the e-sports scene, I thought this may be the best video to leave a comment on. I honestly think a lot of the personality issues and lack of bloodthirst come down more to League pros themselves, rather than the broadcast. Sure, it's more neutered than an FGC event, but Riot really has allowed a lot more trash-talk within Valorant's competitive scene. They've set up the stage for Valorant with the competitors facing each other, and have gone out of their way to feature and highlight a lot of the between round trash-talk between teams and players. The sponsors bit I can't really defend, outside of saying that at a certain point the intrusive sponsor bits find a way to become inside jokes. (I also think it's a bit of a sports culture thing, from how I understand? In the US sponsored bits are a lot more common, even in broadcast sports so people are less annoyed by it here.) But honestly, looking at how Riot has set up Valorant, I don't think Riot's approach will really hurt the FGC. In Valorant, Riot gave the community a chance to run tourneys, with even VCT events (the stuff that qualifies you for the big Riot sponsored ones) being set up and run by 3rd party tourney organizers, with Riot's backing/support. One of Riot's favorite things to do is to set up franchised leagues for their games... but since fighting games aren't team based, I don't see them going that route for Project L. I honestly think they may go the route of Teamfight Tactics or Legends of Runeterra (two of their smaller titles) which allow players to either a) climb a ranked ladder and then place in open qualifiers based off that rank to try and get into the bigger, Riot run tourneys. In Legends of Runeterra, it's even fully organized within the game (and they've been teasing a similar system for Valorant but that's yet to be revealed/released yet.). My best guess would be that they would run their own tourney system, but still allow the game to be hosted at community run events. Maybe having placing at big events giving you qualifying points for their stuff, but I'm not 100% sure. But on your last point about the community growing, I can already say Project L finally brought me into the FGC full-fold. I was a lurker for years, just watching tourneys and KZbin content and always wanting to play fighting games but never knowing where to start. Being too scared to start, if I'm being honest. Project L being announced (and eventually shown off as a tag, assist-fighter) gave me the itch to pick up a game "for real." So I picked up Strive, and I've finally taken the time to learn a fighting game, and I've loved it. Sorry for the long comment, and for whoever reads this, I hope you have a good day!

I am not too worried about Riot trying to swallow the FGC whole because the FGC stands for the Fighting Game COMMUNITY for a reason. Riot better learn to play along with the others or be forced to the side like Nintendo and the Smash community were despite being the biggest community with a roster even more popular than LoL. The FGC enjoys the variety of games on offer so each small community likes to share than compete for attention. This is why major FGC events always showcase multiple games and have smaller tourneys for any upcoming ones down the pipeline. So while the FGC is hype for the LoL fighting game, the FGC will be watching Riot Game's corporate behavior carefully. Trying something extreme like trying to buy out all the high profile players WILL NOT work in the long run. The FGC will simply find other grassroots players to be hype about.

Riot Games' games: -While only 10 years old, still Religiously adds new content -Updating world lore and metas constantly, keeping the community interested for better or worse -Consistent interaction from the developers to the community -F2P Fighting games: -Never left the 90s -Same characters from the last 40 years, afraid to expand or be different -goes in the dark, and news is always bad or underwhelming -60 a pop The truth comes in the fact that fighters simply don't get the interest it should have because the companies that makes them haven't done anything new or interesting in forever. The only exception has been 3D fighters. It's even more pathetic now that these games rely on other IPs to even hold attention, which I believe hurts these games' IP even more in the long run. The community is extremely grassroots at it's core, and still fails to attract most of the new gaming sphere which does in fact like that that professionals act like professionals and the eccentric personalities are left to streamers and content creators. The most interesting concept to me would be a competitive 3d arena fighter. It'd be a challenge, but much more interesting than watching 2d games as they have become nowadays - archaic and predictable. Also, these companies rely on fan retention, and "copy homework" on a whole different level, entire companies copying each other's work or their own old iterations constantly to keep the same niche fanbase happy. That's why you couldn't probably name 20 new characters that have existed in a single one of these games in the past 15 years. If anything, Riot would beat these other companies easily just because the basics, like a reason to care about the characters (LOL Lore) or the net code not falling apart would be there. But I wouldn't hold my breath, because at the end of the day it's still a 2d fighter that many in the main sphere either find boring or frustrating. I say this as someone who's played a lot of fighters. I think you're looking at it the wrong way. Fighters simply cannot get that level of player base to plaster ads all over it's events in the first place, and that has more to do with the actual game and the community's relationship with them than any of the money. I think Riot got extremely lucky with a great concept and didn't rest on it's laurels and refuse to change or become complacent on fan loyalty because some 40 year old guy still remembers Ryu from the good ol' days.

They also clearly want to use the FGC figures and our events to promote the game BUT, they still haven’t disclosed how much Riot will be willing to encroach into the FGC. We’ve seen how restricted League Esports got after the early years, franchising no relegation etc. If Riot eventually say disallows Project L to be run on big tourneys outside their own, offers players big money contracts to exclusively play Project L, we’re going to war.
