Is it weird that I kinda prefer a P-bass pickup in the bridge position instead of a J-bass pickup? Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate the whole “best of both worlds” concept, but the P-bass pickup gives that position a little extra “mmph” that works so well.

Love to see these FGN basses being reviewed in such detail. Big thank you Lobster for showcasing these awesome FGN basses. Though not my taste when it comes to the pick-up configuration, I must say the sound is very punchy and warm at that same time. Thank you! I'm hoping to snag a 5'er of the Mighty Jazz DE soon. Really want to see what their B strings are like. They do 5 or 6 bolts at the neck, so the stability should definitely be there vs a 4 bolt standard fender config.

@@LowEndLobster What I love is I never hear anyone describe any of the FGN basses as "Ibanez-like". I keep wondering how close their 7 string shredders are to the 5227 that got released last year and NONE of them have Bare Knuckle pickups OEM and I think there was only one small group in one small tier that got em. But man, when you see an instrument that is pretty close to an ideal design - that's when your ordinary GASers fade out and the hardcores start to appear. I don't even know how I got some of the stuff I got - there are a few more heartfield basses floating around for cheap (5 and 6 string both) and my 5 fretless is AMAZING as well as different than any other bass I've ever played. I think they were only made a few years and each model probably available for less than a year. Usually you can get a year or so trickle sales out of shelf stock but there either weren't many made or, like the Starfield, got shut down because too good for the price you were paying. You want to go deep and wide on FGN bass/Fender history? support.fender.com/hc/en-us/articles/115002379663-The-Who-What-and-Why-of-Heartfield- Fender was also very great about giving me schematics for my Bassman (Sunn) 1200S amps, which are still in need of finishing repair... :-) projects, projects, projects! Since my particular Heartfield has had its electronics hacked up, it's always comforting to know that some day I'll be able to set it up like it originally was to see what that was like - I don't always agree with people's upgrade choices. :-) support.fender.com/hc/en-us/articles/115002379383-Heartfield-Parts-Lists-And-Wiring-Diagrams

I blame all of this new insight on stupid billy sheehan and his dumb pickup configuration, and that HE EXPLAINED it and IT MADE SENSE. Instruments with stereo outputs only tell me that they have something inside them that really needs more than one jack to communicate properly, but if one amp is all you have it will be happy to melt that one to slag for you. Thanks to this review i've bought one of this instruments! They are pretty hard to find so I contacted FGN in Japan, They told me that they sell them only on the Japanese market, but also that they shipped some to my neighbour country Germany, not long ago. And indeed I found one there! It was delivered today. I doubted long about the Mighty jazz with the active EMG's, but I already own a Squier Japan jazzbass from the mideighties, which is actualy a FGN, which has a built in Audere preamp in it. And it sounds pretty simular. So I chose this one for its unique character and cool looks. It costed more than that 850 dollar, but I think it's still worth it. So if you find one, don't hesitate! Don't know if they will be on the market again..

Very nice. I love to get my hands on one of those. I would like to mod it however. Turn the neck volume pot into a master volume, the bridge volume and tone pot would be two concentric volume and tone pots. A little more complicated but I think that would add something to it whilst keeping it passive. At first glance I didn’t like the horn on this bass, but during your review I realized something. It reminds me of the great wave off Kanagawa print by Hokusai. I felt better about it then. Lol. Maybe that could be a cool decal to put on it. As always great video. Keep up the good work. 👍🏼

I have an Aria Pro II RSB Standard, which was their entry-level P-style bass in the 80s. It also has its pickup quite a bit closer to the bridge, similar to the bridge pickup on this one (but non-reversed). That's a very versatile position. It's punchier than a traditional P, in its mids structure a little towards Rick 4003 bridge or StingRay without the treble sizzle, but with a P bass voice. You can change the character a lot with the way you play the instrument: It can sound like a traditional P bass, but when played near the bridge, it gets a very different character, just like this FGN. But the added neck pickup here is really nice and makes it even more versatile! Awesome rock bass, and imho a perfect alternative to the Jackson CBXNT!

Sadly Lobby I had to retract my last statement on how good this bass is. RX’d late afternoon, unwrapped and played that night briefly. Sounded, felt and looked incredible. I concur mate that neck is one of the best I’ve certainly ever played! Next morning on closer inspection it just didn’t look right. The centre of the G string is 2.5mm closer to the edge of the fretboard than the E string. Doesn’t sound like much but it’s super obvious. Can’t believe I missed it initially?? All of my basses are perfect in this regard. Showed my Luthier. He said this is a common issue with cheaper bolt on neck guitars and basses and a certain well known manufacturer is the worst for it. He said the nut has been cut incorrectly, the G string cut too close to the edge and the neck is poorly aligned in the pocket. 150 sheets to rectify the issue. Contacted the retailer with a pile of photos hoping they’d come to the party in picking up the tab in rectifying the issue. They contacted the factory. Result: there’s nothing wrong with it …. It’s passed all QC checks at both the factory and before being shipped from the retailer. Great looking sounding and feeling bass….a further 150 out of the sky rocket to get it where it should be is disappointing to say the least. I’m certain your excitement and praise for this bass is well justified …. And other super positive reviews I saw and read before purchasing …. My other 3 basses that have come out of the same factory from 1977 to 1989 are flawless in every way …. I just must of got a Friday afternoon version this time haha Keep up the good work mate !! Actually, Ibanez had one called the 2369B Bass (possibly the 1st production bass with the P/J pickup combo from what I researched online), made between 1975 and 1977 (that had the P/J pickup combo, though the P-Bass pickup was closer to the neck than on a standard P-Bass). But Alice Cooper's former bass player, Dennis Dunaway, modified his 1970 Jazz Bass (the one with the mirrors glued to it) around 1971-1972 with a split-coil P-Bass pickup replacing the stock neck pickup in his Jazz Bass. Ted Nugent's former bass player, Rob Grange, modified his 1962 P-Bass in 1973 with the addition of a Jazz Bass pickup in the bridge position (the bass he used on "Stranglehold").

Great review! I actually was thinking about starting a video review series on Japanese made effects pedals. Have you heard about albit? Japanese made tube preamps for reasonable prices. There are zero reviews in English. That also might an interesting route to go. No one is reviewing these amazing effects in English. Thank again!
@LowEndLobster4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I haven't heard of those at all, honestly my knowledge is lacking in the pedal and amp/preamp scene. You should definitely do it! This is the video I used to get started that outlined the equipment and stuff to make HQ video- kzbin.info/www/bejne/l3OThZ-po9CMbKc

It's what I imagine the result would be if a MusicMan Stingray had relations with a Fender P bass and Japanese scientists injected some Godzilla DNA into the embryo, then the new bass comes out with all the awesome traits being dominant and all the not so great traits being recessive. It just sounds like straight up awesomeness in bass form.

I love it, im going back and forth between this and the schecter model t. May just be my ignorance cuz I dont know if they're comparable, and also I've never played either. Also strangely both are very hard to find good reviews on (in english).
@LowEndLobster3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Fern! Model T is another great bass, though I personally haven't played one (but I know folks who have em and love them). The FGN is a lot more unique IMO and is MIJ with incredible build quality. I love Schecter as well, but the FGN Mighty Power and Mighty Jazz basses are top tier for the price. However, the Schecter does have EMGs if you're into that (I do love EMG pickups). We'll hopefully be checking out a model T layer this year :)

It sounds amazing, but i just don't understand why the go-to electronics for passive 2-pickup basses is always vol/vol/tone. Why on earth aren't the 60's style stacked jazz controls more standard? (Especially if they went through the trouble of a ricky-sized pickguard, doesn't vol/vol/tone/tone make the most sense?)

You're right, it is a little bit forward towards the neck, though I think the EA side of the pickup is in the right spot, the DG side is in front instead of the traditional position (vs just flipping it in place).

Do a lot of Precision Bass players play the instrument with the tone turned down half-way at all ? I've been experimenting a lil with the tone on my Squier Precision Bass...
@LowEndLobster4 жыл бұрын
No idea, but keep in mind that the impact of the tone knob with vary from instrument to instrument depending on the pot and tone cap used. Tone half way down is a nice middle ground from the very clear and almost aggressive sound of the tone all the way up, and the muted sound of the tone all the way down. The tone knob is there to be turned! Enjoy your bass my friend!

If it were available as a left-handed option within the same price range, I'd be all over it like you wouldn't believe-lol!
