It’s kind of the reason why he was refusing to fight for most of the book. The episode with Pyrrha was not in the Iliad, and was a later story written by an author nearly 1,000 years after the original was written, by the Roman poet Statius, as part of his Achilleid epic. It’s basically fanfiction. You would know that, though, if you actually bothered to have read the Iliad yourself.

The mythology around the Trojan war was exclusively an oral tradition for a long time before it was codified in the Iliad, Odyssey, etc. So there had already been plenty of time for regional variation and the author had to decide what lore to include or not as well. That doesn't mean the other myths didn't remain in oral tradition throughout the generations. Indeed, many of them inspired plays or other works that later codified certain versions of events. Since this is mythology and not actually history, whilst older stories are generally regarded as 'more accurate', I don't think that any of the popular stories necessarily outweigh the others in terms of 'canon of events', especially when they don't contradict each other.
