Atherosclerosis results from the deposition of cholesterol into the artery walls by particles known as lipoproteins such as VLDL, LDL, and Lp(a). Each of these atherogenic particles has as its structural core a large protein, called apolipoprotein B-100, or Apo B. This video illustrates the role of Apo B in the formation of these atherogenic lipoproteins, and shows why Apo B concentration is recognized as a leading predictor of cardiovascular risk in both the general population and in people with familial hypercholesterolemia (FH).
