This video gives a comprehensive description of lipoproteins and their biological importance. A lipoprotein is a biochemical assembly whose primary purpose is to transport hydrophobic lipid (also known as fat) molecules in water, as in blood plasma or other extracellular fluids. Examples of lipoproteins include plasma lipoprotein particles (HDL, LDL, IDL, VLDL and chylomicrons). Subgroups of these plasma particles are primary drivers or modulators of atherosclerosis.

This was so clear. I wanted to cry during my biochem lecture. Usually, my professor is quite good but somewhow, this one was ever so confusing. I like that you went at the right pace and showed the charts with compositions of each lipoprotein.

The one million dollar question is: why does the LDL dump their load beside the highway. That IS NOT because there is to much LDL. That is because the LDL is inflamed by sugar!! Glycation.

Arpan, cholesterol is not garbage. You just said it is necessary to produce hormones, it plays huge role in cell repair. Cholesterol is sent to arteries because they are inflamated and damaged by high sugar levels. Don't blame poor LDL, he wants to save arteries.

That was very useful, thanks. One thing that it is not very clear there is that chylomicrons don't go from enterocytes to the bloodstream (as the illustration seems to suggest), but from the enterocytes into the lymphatic system. Then chylomicrons in the lymphatic eventually reach systemic circulation through the thoracic duct.

Excellent presentation thank you. However I have believed as stated by dr Robert Lustig ….there are two types of LDL’s. Large buoyant which are harmless and small dense which are bad. He has said …,”if your triglycerides are high then your LDL is the wrong kind ie:small dense. If that is correct and you agree then can yiu work that into an upcoming presentation? Please

Animated biology With arpan yes I totally will! Btw I have a question , if I understood it right, does HDL take the APOC2 protein from LDL and then later give it to VLDL? or does it always have the apoC2 protein in it?

Good work, except about LDL inappropriately dumping cholesterol in the artery walls. Cholesterol is part of the repair process and not a causal factor in heart disease.

How beautiful of our body to design such complex mechanisms of transport! LDL, as important it is, may cause arterial plaque, which then gets cleaned by HDL. p.s. thanks for the wonderful video Arpan 😁

Chylomicron = excellent naming, presupposed first discovered in medicine, simply comprehended interactions, Vldl,ldl,hdl= half-assed naming effort, probably more confusing to describe their actions, probably where medicinal pathology exists in modern 21st century

How does the cholesterol that is dumped by the artery walls get through the artery cells to the other side of those cells? Are there receptors on the cells lining the arteries that then transport them over to the other side where they then collect?

An interesting video, but please can you explain when you say ''LDL can deposit too much cholesterol in the artery walls...'' Surely this wouldn't happen in a metabolically healthy individual and the excess cholesterol would just get eliminated through the bile. What seems to be missing is the REASON for arterial wall damage, i.e. how the LDL's become damaged in the first place...
@animatedbiologywitharpan

Good question, I would make anew video on that

You're right, LDLs are usually not atherogenic. However, due to external factors such as smoking, it can damage the LDLs by oxidising them resulting in the production of free radicals. Damaged radicals are then recognised by macrophages (due to the presence of scavenger receptor). They engulf it which results in the formation of foam cells. Many such foam cells over time form atherosclerotic aggregates and plaques leading to development of IHD and ACS. I hope this helps💛 (Source: Geeky Medics)

Good question. As understand it, the artery walls can become damaged and stretched out by excess volume of fluid (blood etc) in the circulation. What causes the OVER STRETCHING? One molecule of salt will hold three molecules of water. Likewise one molecule of glucose will also hold three molecules of water. So excess carbs in diet generate excess glucose until insulin takes care of it. The key thing is that your body needs salt as an electrolyte but the body needs zero carbs to survive!!! Carbs are not an eccentual nutriant, which is reason Ketogenic diet is becoming more popular
