Having been around bison my entire life, I can tell you that this sort of thing does not happen if you are exercising proper caution. So here's the thing...my family raised bison, not because they are cute...we raised them to eat. Twice a day, every day for over 10 years I fed and looked over them...not ONCE did we have a nice one... They will tear anything and everything up. I have some doubts about what he said happened ...Granted anything can happen...but, IMO and experience working with bison, they were a hell of a lot closer than they claimed. The one that hurt her was 60 yards away and was rolling in the dirt. That is more than enough time to get away.. ffs the bison head butted her...now why in the hell would a person stand there and have a bull bison charge you....60 YARDS away...I know why, they were way closer than he claims...they can run pretty fast but wallowing in the dirt, 60 yards away, she stands there waiting to be headbutted...if that bison ran that 60 yards and hit her in the head with his, she would of died...the inertia built up by that bull running would of scramble her brains....I've seen it happen to our cattle when one of our bison bulls took the fence down and got in with our cows and bulls. They were close too close....

My friend ran a bison ranch, and the bison hated him…they wrecked his pickups and he would get me to come feed the bison while he sat in the tractor cab, two round bails in the front and three on the back, I’d be riding the pto. And he’d dropped them on this hill, I’d unroll them and get back on, they never bothered me. All he had to do was get out of the cab and the bison would get upset and chase him back into the cab lol lol lol The bison are not dumb, they are just slow and take their time…and they will trample a fool…these are wild animals, stay away from them.

I was at Yellowstone last year and you wouldnt believe these idiots. A man with a baby in a stroller less than 10 feet away from a bison with a small wooden fence separating them. But god forbid my nephews ride their bikes on a trail that wasnt even marked a no bike zone. Honesty, the park rangers there kind of suck. They seem more concerned with arbitrary rules that allow them to collect fine money than protecting the animals and keeping them safe.

I think many people truly don’t realize just how wild Yellowstone National Park is. There’s danger pretty much all around you. Just bc it’s called, “a park,” doesn’t mean it idyllic & safe. There’s a lot of things in the park that can kill you, from wild animals, to the terrain, & the elements. I’ve been there 3x (also hiked in the Grand Tetons (grizzlies, moose, cougars, wolves, etc). When I’m out in “the wild,” I think of it like driving a motorcycle. You have to be looking around constantly, & be overly cautious. I’m sorry that happened to that woman. I’m glad she survived.

Considering the fact that the bison did attack, it is difficult to believe that the couple gave enough space to the bison. The ranger rule is to give a bison 100 feet of space. The man in the interview said that at one point they were less than 30 yards away.

I have been right up to a Bison by accident to the point we could have touched it. We did not see it until was came over the hill. But we simply walked back. I feel sometimes you take photos and your attention span is shortened. You don’t realize just how quick these animals are and how easily it is to get surprised by them. It is part of dangers when getting close to wild life. Bison have every reason to fear people.

When I hear of a tragedy like this, I’m reminded how at a buffalo reserve I just visited in Montana, where, despite signs all over to stay in your car, car after car had people getting out and taking pictures, and toddlers were hanging out windows. The Yellowstone people tried to do the right thing, and were still attacked, but I’m amazed how many people think they’re perfectly safe. I’m told those huge beasts can run 35 mph…how fast can YOU RUN?!?

They call them "wild animals" for a reason. When you enter a natural environment, you have to be aware of these critters and you are assuming the risk of such encounters. Unlike a lot of animal encounters in national parks, at least these people knew the danger and tried to avoid it but the risk cannot be fully mitigated in such situations.

Wake up this is not the season to be a tourist in the wild. When birds, animals are mating, the sun is blaring and the energy is intense who wants the smell and sight of humans in the mix. Humans are so arrogant and disrespectful to the wild species. It is a miracle she is not dead!! This month I was walking in an area that although there are some wild animals around the place I was walking is a shopping village. Out of nowhere, never heard a sound very early in the morning, and suddenly I was hit on the side of my head so hard by a crow I thought it was a piece of furniture had fallen from the apartment above. Had me in bed for 2 days. Respect the wild particularly during nesting season and the deep heat. Peace to the World.

We have a big dent and scratch to the metal from it’s horn. We pulled over when we were a safe distance and park workers that saw the attack stopped as well.
