I think James lost the race because Top Gear failed to show us the part where James took the Fiat 500 through the car wash at 5:20 approx the car is clearly rather dirty on the sides but at the end of the clip when James speaks to the BMX bandits the car is a lot cleaner than it was.

Look again at the early snow scenes, same dirty sides there. Clearly, the car didn't get dirty during the race and then they went and cleaned it. They grabbed a shot they filmed on the day he drove it around in the snow and was just roadtesting it. They probably had an empty space in the race scene and went with a shot from a different day to fill it. This continuity error doesn't mean the whole thing was faked. The shot of the bikers jumping the car and how close it is is pretty good evidence of that, but not that error.

I really don't understand why people seem to dislike the fiat. Personally, I like it because its fuel efficient, and has a unique look to it (interior and exterior). The price is reasonable and it is small (which I like). It's no sports car but its practical.

Surprisingly some diesel cars are pretty quick. Classic case, the Isuzu Gemini. And there's one I'm using now, the Mitsubishi Chariot Diesel version (1992 model), which actually drives like a gasoline engined car (haven't measured 0-60 time yet, but whenever I nail the throttle it just GOES!). And now there's the Ford Focus Diesel, which Ford claims is just as quick as the gasoline version.

I had three of them in a row. Swapped that brand for a vauxhall Crossland X now though but only because I needed a 5 door car.

Teo P Nah... they could do totally safe mini 911's out of the 500 and Beatle. The only barrier is the cost. They'd have to cost about twice the price, because they would not be able to reuse Panda and Golf platforms.

They would cost a lot more in a rear engine configuration. I love rear engine but, as the previous commenter noted rear engines are not quite as safe. It would be expensive to make them safe thus why they can't exist rear engine.

Le Leedler Yeah, I know, it would probably cost as much as a Porsche Boxster. By the way, this reminds me that Beatle engine should be a 4-cylyinder boxer configuration, something like Subaru Impreza engine, but smaller, put behind the rear axle. We would end up with a smaller version of Porsche 911 with Boxster price, because it would have to be a unique platform, not something shared with the Golf. Similar with the Fiat 500, albeit with small inline engine. Boxer unnecessary there, obviously. Can be water cooled, like the new 911, no need for air cooled angine. Still, the rear engine configuration for the 500 would make it twice as expensive as the current model, because the platform could not be shared with the Panda. We live in the times when shared platforms and cutting cost is everything. Originality, design, tradition, heritage, these are no longer important.

Your not explaining anything to these viewers . This fiat 500 is a big waste money .This fiat has a 101 horse power engine which is pathetic with 98 foot pound torch , seriously ?? Hybrids go faster then that . The inside has no leg room and is made of plastic all around . Windows only power down not up Lol . They added a handle so you can roll it up later . On and on . You can't even get laid in this thing if you tried . Chances of survival in a accident or slim to none , and here's the best, fiat is asking $ 21.000 and up for this crap . Lol Waste of time and money .

Giovani22 Complete rubbish. I drove one for a week in Italy. Extremely well made car. Very solid at speed and even on the motorway (I was amazed at how good it was at high speeds). The plastic interior (as opposed to what exactly?) is very nicely styled, good to touch and high quality. It aslo had half leather interior which was very good. Nice gear change, very light steering. 101bhp is loads in a city car of this size/weight. VW passats came with 75bhp 15 years ago for comparison. The 500 never felt slow on small Italian roads. I am 5'11 and never felt cramped in it. It's small city car, what exactly are you expecting of it? If you want a motorway cruiser that will easily do over 90mph why are you looking at a Fiat 500?

I don't know what the standards are in Europe ( probably not much ) but here in America we get more for our money .For $21.000 in America you can get a V6, 300 horse power, 262 foot torque , 4 door all leather interior , Sun roof and much more list goes on, and that's very standard . Please tell me what car that costs $21000 comes with a v6, leather, etc. I don't think you would even get a Ford F150 for that anymore. Yes, USA has great value in cars but the fiat 500 is one of the cheaper cars in its class over here. I doubt it's the base spec for sale at $21000 either. No one sells base spec in America. Besides, the fiat 500 costs nowhere near that in Europe. You did hear him say it costs £8000 yeah?

Chevy camaro $22.500( my next purchase) V6, 424 hp , 4 door all leather interior , loaded with cool features and more ( also available in V8) . Check this out , you can get a toyota corolla $16.900 4 door partially loaded 4cylinder 16 valve 150hp . You don't see to many fiats 500 here at all but when you do it looks so tiny and out place and unsafe for these roads . If your telling me that it costs $8000 euros in Europe well then the exchange rate in U.S. dollars would be around $9.000 a (little over) and that's exactly what I thought it was worth not $21.000. But then again it's not my style, and let's be honest the fiat 500 is not a cool looking car you are not going to impress a woman with that . Sorry lo. P.S it's noisy
