I built a few of those back in the early 80's.. I love that motor!!..I did run into one issue that should be a "run away" signal when buying one..It has a Nitrated Crankshaft made out of some Majic Mystery Metal!!!..I had a crank down at Mcclaren's shop for the better part of a year, bieng "built up" due to galling on the rod journals...Every time they would heat it up to add filler metal, the crank would begin to MELT! . Then of course it was a 60 day wait, for it to cool off enough, to retry...It took a year to get it right and they were happier to get rid of it, then I was to get it back LOL .said they would NEVER do another one..You left out the Crown Jewel of that engines pedigree..The Lancia Stratos!!!.. I have dreamed of finding a totalled Coupe to steal the engine for a Kit Build.....My Coupes red lined at 10,000 RPM..and the SOUND!!..I still dream of it and shift gears in my sleep at 70 yeats old..LOL..Nice Video!!..Have you done any of the Lamborghini V-12's of that era??..They were "Gear Drive" and the 2 little idler gears right in the center middle are completely inadequate for the "loads" and are the first thing to go!..I have had much better luck NOW as no one made a quality bearing back then to solve the issue. This is a "buyers tip" when purchasing a "period" Lambo. Listen carefully to those bearings and figure the replacement cost into your final "bid/offer"...👍👍👍🇺🇸

With one minor mistake - he refers to the other car using this engine as a 'Ferrari' Dino. It was never labelled with ANY Ferrari emblems at all, and was marketed simply as a Dino 246 GT. FWIW the early 308 GT 4 cars also were Dinos, and not Ferrari.

Pashak de Scilly, maybe that’s just to help differentiate it to the Fiat Dino when comparing in the same video. Otherwise he’d just have to call it Dino.

You are a year older than I am but in 1984 I had a 2.4 liter Fiat Dino spider and a Ferrari 308GT4, and lived in a loft above a 2 car garage. Both cars were wore out and not really worth fixing, but I was a young wrench at the local Ferrari/Maserati/Alfa dealer and could get parts reasonably cheap and use the shop when needed. Those cars taught me a lot and I really enjoyed them, and even though I have had a ton of Italian cars since then those two I still miss, particularly the Fiat. Oh my Fiat had straight pipes with a pair of glass packs and I had K&N filters on the carbs, because I was cheap and I loved the sound. Thanks for bringing back the great memories

Brought back memories for me. In Australia in 1968 I worked as the head operator for a firm of sharebrokers in Melbourne & had a massive paper profit that was going to allow me to buy a Dino 246 GT. The bum fell out of the nickel boom market so all I could manage was a used very hot Fiat 1500 MK 2. Brilliant little beast with a column mounted gear shift that was so sweet you could flick through the gears with two fingers while your thumb was still hooked into the steering wheel. Love your display of passion & automotive engineering skills.

What a lovely car. Beautifully preserved. I was an Alfa enthusiast around the time you bought your first Fiat Spider Iain, but always loved to see such semi rare exotics on the road. Another favourite of mine was the pretty Lancia Fulvia. Even back then, they, along with old boat tailed Alfa Spiders were rare enough to put a smile on your face when you saw one, but numerous enough to recognise them among all the more 'popular' Capri's, Cortina's, Dolly Sprints and RS 2000's driven by my contemporaries. My personal tipple was Bertone Gtv's, of which I had several. To this day my heart skips a beat to see any of these lovely cars on the road. I recently saw a Fulvia in only moderate visual condition going for £12,000 at a classics garage. It made me gasp, but by today's standards it may have been a bargain!! A wonderful education also to hear the interplay between Fiat, Ferrari and Ford and this car's conception, and also the mention of Vittorio Jano and his genius engines.

Your videos are a joy to watch and bring back memories of all the work my father and myself used work on these cars, your technique in carburettor balancing is fairly similar to the way we used to do it, i remember pulling ht plugs out the listen to the engines tone when it lost a cylinder... Perfection was eveey cylinder the same... I remember him bending butterfly linkages to for balancing the carbs aswel. I so miss these days working on these cars, wish i was still involved with it, and so sad after my father passed away last year how much knowledge was lost. I still have so many of his specialist tools, that hold dearly. Thank you again for your amazing channel, would love to one day meet you!

I used to have a blue Alfa GTV6 - one day I was trying to stop it from stalling so I was rev'ing it to get some heat in it. When I finally got it to idle without stalling, I got out and this kid who had been watching me said 'Sounds very fast'. I didn't have the heart to tell him that it really wasn't, but boy did that Alfa V6 sound glorious. To this day, my wife still comments on how a car sounds as an important part of the character but "it's not as good as the blue Alfa...."

Was that the Busso V6 ? Even to this day most car enthusiasts consider that to be the best V6 ever made. The only V6 I’ve ever had was my 1999 Camry with the 1MZ-FE. Even though it wasn’t anything exotic that car probably had the smoothest engine of anything I’ve ever owned and I put nearly 350,000 miles on it before selling it on. If I’m not mistaken it was a 60 degree V6. I still feel like V6’s get a lot of hate for no reason compared to V8’s and even high revving 4 cylinders.

You have to understand that before the Internet getting parts, finding how to get good repairs done either by yourself or by a decent mechanic was impossible. Italian cars rusted, they all have "compromises" (difficult gear changes, dubious cooling systems, laughable air-con, fussy oil needs, quality issues etc.) and they generally are frustrating to drive in traffic. Particularly the sporty ones. No one would buy them once they began to rust and wear out. So we put them in the garage because we couldn't part with them but couldn't run them and bought some kind of reliable, normal car to carry the kids and the shopping. Jay Leno was given a Moira because no one could fix the motor. People sent Alfas, Fiats, Renaults etc to the scrap yard because they had a blown head gasket (over heating) and rust in the quarter panels. I turned down a Lancia Beta HF for $1000 AUD. 500 quid ! because it needed a head gasket. It was too expensive to keep them when you couldn't sell them on. My '79 Alfetta GTV is now a rarity because they were water soluble and hard to not crunch the gears. My GTV6 sat in a garage for 20 years or more. Has done 50,000 miles (85,000km) and is totally original bar some mods done really early on to the engine. Every bit of rubber is perished. Do I have the only GTV6 in the world with the original shock absorbers? Possibly? Why? Because the owner couldn't sell it and couldn't drive it.

Nice video Mr Tyrell, I’ve owned a 2.0 spider 1st series for 26 years, my pride and joy. I sold it last summer 😩. I drove to Germany to get a hardtop for it which I saw advertised and met an older gent who had an unbelievable collection of cars mainly racing Abarth’s etc, he owned 6 fiat Dinos as part of his collection, he did a lot of racing in his youth, I asked him which Dino was his favourite the 2 litre or 2.4? His said the 2 litre was his favourite by far. I bought the hardtop and he showed me the rest of his collection which he kept at another location (Amazing) the journey was worth it just to meet such a guy I’ll never anyforget it. I like what you did to the exhaust (I should have done that) but mine sounded awesome anyway with a goff stainless steel one. So glad to have discovered your channel I’m subscribed.. all the best🍀

Well, this channel is great stuff! One can start by observing that Tyrrell would be fascinating to listen to even if he were discussing coal-fired boilers or the latest grunion run. He blends an expert's extensive historical and technical knowledge with a feel for a layman's astonishment at the extraordinary that really conveys the uniqueness and specialness of the intimate details he reveals. My brother turned me on to the Fiat Dino Spider video because we were both 124 owners of the time. The Dino promised to be a little rich for my pocketbook when it came out so I opted for a 69/70 Alfa Romeo 1750 Spider. Anyway, I'm churning through the rest of these videos and subscribed for more. Keep it up, Tyrrell!

Glorious! That has to be one of the best sounding engines ever. I always remember the coupe version featured in the original Italian Job movie. It was the sound then that captivated me and I have loved them ever since. A wonderful video, Iain. Thank you, it’s really made my day.

I have to call on a technicality. I never thought I’d hear a better sound than an Alfa GTV6, but that is even better. However….it is due to the exhaust and induction modifications which have freed the full voice of the engine. Another great video 😀
