Iain’s been wanting to get a Pantera in the workshop for a some time, as it’s been a while since one came in. This one isn’t in for work, but Hampsons Auctions invited Iain to do a video, and, bearing in mind it’s brief but but dramatic moment in one of the most successful TV series ever, he couldn’t resist. Underdog Supercar or over- hyped collection of Italian- American cultures? We’ll let you decide….

Just a correction, the 351 Windsor got its name from Windsor Ontario Canada, across from Detroit. It was Canadian built

Yes, and in the 70s Ford also produced a 351 Cleveland. I learned to drive in a 1977 Ford pickup with the 351 Cleveland and I wish I still had that old beast today. Of course, gas mileage and handling sucked, but it was built like a tank!

Yes Windsor ON is the counterpoint to Detroit as a centre for car manufacturing in Canada, with major auto firms having production lines there. In large part to due to the Canadian Auto Workers Union separating from the UAW to be its own entity and requiring levels of manufacturing in Canada to be in line with car sales in Canada.

As a young boy in Ireland, on my push bike on a back road in Kilkenny around 1980, I had a DeTonaso Pantera rumble past me. Owned by a guy called Michael Madden. I can still see the back of the car as it drove up the road away from me. It was low and wide, with such wide wheels as I had never seen, and two exhaust pipes stuck out the back of the car. The noise from that engine still rings in my ears today. Moving forward ten years, I'm at the classic car show at the NEC in Birmingham, showing a friend a DeTomaso Pantera car sales brochure on a stall, and a guy behind me suddenly said, "I have one of those". His name was Harvey Knowlson. I instantly turned around and asked him to sell it to me. He declined, but we exchanged telephone numbers. It took me two years of chasing him to eventually purchase the car located in Aberdeen. The vehicle was entirely stripped and has the registration 238 HOT. 35 years later, I still have the car. Note that the build date for the vehicle is 11th October 1971. My birthday is 11th October 1964. What makes the car more remarkable is that it is a right-hand drive Pantera, and it sits at home beside my right-hand drive 1968 Porsche 912, which I have owned for 35 years. Both are keepers and will be handed down to my children.

@@stephenscholes4758 Well, there's a difference between performance applications and racing applications; perhaps my example wasn't the right one. There have been lots and lots of American V-8 engines right off the showroom floor that one could consider high-performance. And this is still true today. And define "ridiculously large"; that means different things in different applications--I hardly think 351 cubic inches is ridiculously large.

I knew a guy who owned one of these cars, we were working at his place, 3 of us and we had finished the job and my 2 mates went to a local pub and waited for me to settle the bill and meet them later. I eventually got him to cough up and he offered me a lift to the pub, a few miles away. He drove me there in one of those things and it was definitely cramped in there and that made the cartoonish speed seem more hilarious. As he hit the loud peddle all hell broke loose and all I could do was laugh like a maniac, what a ride! When I managed to climb out of it, still giggling like a lunatic, I was very discumbobulated.

My Dad owned a Lincoln sedan and that was my key to getting a ride in the new Pantera in 1970 as they were sold in the US by Lincoln dealers. I was 18 years old and my Dad grudgingly called a salesman he dealt with at the dealership and asked him to give me a ride. The salesman could really wring out the Pantera as I recall sliding into the passenger side door card while he took sweepers at over 90 MPH. I asked if he could let me drive. The rules that you had to be over 20, but he let 18 year old me take the wheel. I practically cried with joy that I recall vividly to this day. He praised my delicate touch with the clutch and shifter and I think I smiled for a month. Thrill of my life. Thanks Ian, for letting me relive the thrill with you.

In 1969, I got my first car, a bright shiny yellow Cougar Eliminator from the Lincoln-Mercury dealer near downtown Los Angeles. My dad would lease a big Colony Park station wagon there every two years. In 1971 I started attending university nearby at USC and would take my Cougar in for service to this dealership. One day, Panteras started showing up on the showroom floor and the leasing manager (who knew me by name) came up to me and said "Why don't you trade the Cougar in and get one of these?" I was 18 years old, and had it happened which it did not, I'm sure I wouldn't have survived the decade. I've had my '72 Pantera Pre L for over 30 years now, and coincidentally, my next door neighbor has had his (in the same blue color as the video's car) since he bought it new in 1973 for $9850.00.

To join the suspension nerdyness. The downside to having a higher roll centre is that you get more camber change affecting the tyres as the suspension deflects. This also introduces gyroscopic precession that can be problematic for the steered wheels. You can, and I'm sure Ing. Dallara did, mitigate this with suitably firm springs and dampers. The topic is probably broad enough for a video of its own, but would people find that interesting?

@@iain_tyrrell That's an idea for a second channel! Something like "Tyrrell's Technicalities", covering deep dives on the various technical subjects involved in classic cars - be it maintenance, setup, or what all those obscure terms actually mean. Your explanation of roll height is the first I've heard that actually made sense, but it still left some unanswered questions like, why aren't all cars designed with a high roll centre? What are the advantages and disadvantages of such? And so on, giving examples of why a designer chose one way over another (ideally using cars either in the 'shop, or examples you've already covered in a previous video). Yes, this is a level of detail that probably wouldn't be suitable for the main "Workshop" channel, being perhaps too obscure for the casual viewer, but would be eminently suited for a secondary channel where the technically inclined can get into the details to our hearts content...?

I was involved in a plane crash in 1978. Its a long story so I’ll cut to the chase. The attorney handling the suit for us was actually a friend who took the case on spec, mentioning to me that he intended to use anything he made on the case to buy a Pantera. He won the case for us and sure enough, went on to buy the Pantera. I got to ride in it and enjoyed the experience although as Iain mentioned, the cabin was tight. Might it be why they didn’t sell as many in the states? Incidentally, we used our settlement to help buy our first house. Nasty crash but a rewarding outcome for us and the attorney.

It’s actually a very reliable car, you can just take long drives or trips in it without any worries. I’ve driven it many times and the performance will really shove you back in the seat, and the handling is amazing. Yes, the interior is cramped, but I’m only 5’8” so it’s not cramped to the point of being intolerable. They are simple cars to work on which is good and bad: skilled mechanics don’t mind working on them, but it also means a lot of not so skilled people have worked on them. I’d definitely recommend buying one, as long as you get all of the repair history and have it checked out by mechanics who understand them.

Everything Mr. Tyrrell said about the Pantera and Cleveland V8's was spot on. I've owned a couple of Cleveland equipped Ford coupes, and they're a brilliant design for an American small block. I've owned quite a few Chevrolet V8's, and rate the 351 Cleveland ahead of the 350 Chev. They were the basis of Ford's small block equipped competition cars for series like Trans-Am, so were designed with that in mind. The Cleveland heads had massive ports and runners that could flow massive amounts of air for the cubic capacity of that engine, closer to a "big-block" than your average small-block, which is why they didn't like to idle and were a little "rough" at low RPM's, but they smoothed out beautifully beyond 2000 RPM and had a very similar character & feel to a big-block. And even more importantly, that KILLER raucous, baritone, V8 soundtrack. Ferrari & Lamborghini engines make a "nice" sound, in an upper crust, moneyed & civilised way. But I don't want a supercar that sounds "nice", and for my money, NO supercar beats the Pantera for that "bad boy", rebellious, hard-rock, antisocial, antiestablishment, uncivilised thunderous roar. Install a decent cam, some roller rockers, a race intake manifold, and some racing exhaust headers into & on that Cleveland V8, and it sounds like something demonic from the basements of Hell.... All-mighty thumping, pounding, lumpy, off-beat staccato idle like a race car, then clearing it's throat as revs rise, settling into a MAGIFICENT V8 roar that increases in menace, intent, & intensity all the way to redline, feeling like it will start earthquakes bouncing off the walls of your favourite canyon road. The perfect engine for the Pantera and the perfect supercar for all the reasons Mr Tyrrell explained. Thought about thinning the collection to fund an early Pantera more than once, but my procrastination has seen their prices finally start to reflect their true value, and rise ever beyond my budget now. Should've pulled the trigger when they were undervalued for years. Dammit. At least I can commiserate with a ride in my '79 BMW 635CSi with the race-derived M90 3.5 inline-6 engine and close ratio 5 speed "Dogleg" 265/5 Getrag racing gearbox. So, life doesn't totally suck. The Panteras sounded absolutely brutal at Lemans roaring down the Mulsanne in the md 70’s European elegance with brutal good old American muscle. Absolutely fabulous!!! Than in the late 70s the Silhouette Pantera with all the crazy aero??? Absolutely mental!!! They simply sounded evil! Loved those!!! 😄 PS- if you squint your eye- you can see a little BMW M1 in that rear window pillar and rear window vent in the body.

My friend owned a Pantera and was outside of San Francisco on route 280 speeding and was pulled over by the CHP who was attempting to give him a ticket. The officer did not know that this individual had drugs in the vehicle and knew that if the officer Searched the car, it would be over for him. He decided after the officer took his drivers license and registration to hammer the throttle spray rocks all over the officer and his patrol car and make a run for it. He actually was successful after hiding out a few days in the mountains and received his license, registration and ticket in the mail about a week later. he has long passed away, but the story the way he told it was so incredible and the laughing we had after hearing it was equally as nice. This is my memory of a Pantera that will last forever, and of course, my friend as well.

Thank you again Iain. I was not aware that JP Delara was responsible for the chassis/suspension. It makes the car extra special and now I understand why it is so nicely planted to drive. A Ford V8 is not as exotic as an Italian V8 or V12, but it is the result what counts at the end in driving. Loverly video, thanks again!!😍👍

The Pantera is one of those cars that I badly wanted when I was a teenager along with a Countach, a Ferrari 288 GTO, or the Buick Grand National. Unlike a lot of modern super cars they were easier to work on yourself. Those Ford pushrod V-8s were well made engines that could last a really long time. And they also sounded really good.

The Pantera was sold in the USA through Mercury dealers because Ford already had a full line of high performance cars. The Mercury dealers had no marketing, no support, and no idea how to sell an Italian exotic. No one knew what they were. A real shame. I always loved the look of the Pantera. Thanks for the intel on it’s engineering.I had no idea Dallara was the chassis designer. And the Muria foundation! So cool!

It was also quite competitive on price, at £6,700: Jensen's Interceptor SP was over £7K, a Porsche 911 was £6,500 and BMW's 3.0CSi was £6,200.
