Fiat Ducato 250 Cam belt , Water Pump Installation & Fitting + bonus bits.

Welcome in this video I will be trying to replace my cambelt and waterpump on my Fiat Ducato T669 Camper van 2014
I fitting a Gates Kit Part No.KP15592XS
It comes complete with Belt, Tensioner , Idler Pulley , O Rings and a Water pump.
Purchased from Ebay Via Parts in Motion Item ID: 3345273472030
Cost £163.64
I also replaced the Drive Belt and the Air Con Belt Details in Video
This was the first time doing a Ducato and i made some mistakes so this is for the purpose of reference only but I feel the jobs a goodn.

Mine was tight but I think I screwed a bolt through one of the additional ports and used the casing to apply some pressure. I could be wrong because I’ve done a few in the past. But apologies if I didn’t include that in video.

I have a Motorhome on a 2018 Ducato 2.3 130 base (X250). So my timing belt is due under the 5yr recommended cycle. I have been searching for a KZbin video showing the basic steps for ages. I was a mechanic in a former life so the thought of it doesn't bother me, but having someone else walk through the steps before I get the tools out is brilliant. Thanks for a well informed video, its not just changing a cambelt its getting to know your vehicle, so a winner and for a later date if it breaks down out on the road , and if you aren't capable of changing the belt you could atleast clean and lube the rusty studs and clean the water outlet flap

Hi Andy please stat when turning the engine bij starter the auxiliary pouli must be mounted on the crank shaft !! Otherwise the belt will come off . Furthermore nice hand on for changing cambelt on fiat ducato😊

Thanks again for the video , its been a great help , just did my belt and the other belts . My only worry is torque of tensioner on timing belt , my big torque didnt go down to 35nm and small one only went to 25 , so 25nm on that one and a bit of guess work for 35 but i did out blue thread lock on . Heres hoping

We have a 2013 X250 Multijet. Fiat Commercial wanted £1300 to change belt. A local independent commercial garage changed cambelt, waterpump and aux belt for £650. Parts were almost £300. I’m an engineer but for £350 I think I’ll let someone else do it to save hassle.

£300 hundred is still overpriced for the kit and pump. A gates kit is under £200 if you shop around but I fully understand why you would let a garage do it for you. I’ve done 30 or 40 cam belts and chains over the years and I can tell you my 3rd one ( on a L200 Mitsubishi) didn’t end well, somehow the tensioner failed and the timing jumped a couple of teeth and that was the end of that engine. I was paranoid about doing the next few from that moment I always double check and again all my fixings and timing marks. Fingers crossed ive never had a problem since. It’s fair to say that tensioners of all kinds have improved considerably over the years. Re. Waterpump I think it’s sufficient to change it every other belt unless I think it’s suspect. Best wishes.

Feeling confident to do my own now, only worry is when pulling the fuel pump pulley what are those M8 bolts pushing against on the fuel pump spindle , (black disc) I’m guessing it’s not a seal or plastic collar? Hi from what I recall the air con pipes are mainly aluminium and rigid. If your pipes are flexible and collapsing then I can only imagine that they may have perished. I didn’t remove any of my air conditioning pipes. Sorry I can’t be more helpful.

Tnx, now I know that I do not pay for too much of 7 hour garage job! What a task! Buddy drove over 200 000km accidentally for his (he was thinking it is a chain engine) all ok. I did 8 years and 80 000 km for first and 8 years and 50 000 km for second in my camper, both times belt was like a new last time waterpump too. But don't push your luck as I did!

Wow. He was one lucky bunny. The Ducato does have a small chain on at the back in the cam but that one appears to be a life long chain ( whatever that means).

did you use a special cam timing bolts kit? I mean the pins that keep everything aligned while you remove the cam belt. any idea on where you get one? thanks.

Hi yes I did. You can buy a pin kit on eBay for about £18. I only pinned the the cam shaft and the crankshaft. There is no need to pin the fuel pump as it’s not timed up and the other pin is for the back of the cam shaft which is only necessary if your doing the cam chain. Yes there is a chain and a belt on the Ducato.

Hi , Do you need to loosen the cam shaft sprocket to make sure it all settles in place when you tension belt , then retighten . I read that’s the reason for the little camshaft pins that come in kit . I remember fitting a vw t4 timing belt and the vw instructions said to loosen the pulley then retighten after belt fitted . I’m no expert , only ever done two and I’m about to do mine on my 2019 plate . I would rather not have to buy a tool to hold pulley but rather do it if it should be done that way , cheers

That’s quite right. I understand that is a recommendation but I have never done it in the Ducato. I had it pinned up excluding the fuel pump but was able to seat it just fine.

Never removed a Ducato head well not yet anyway 😂 you’d still need to remove the belt etc and probably get some movement on the engine to to remove the turbo and manifold but I’m just guessing as I’ve never looked at the prospect.

I have a 2017 Ducato X250 Multijet. I'm thinking of replacing the timing belt and water pump myself after 110,000 km. The first one was replaced at the dealer. Do I need to loosen the four compressor bolts to remove the AC belt? What should I do when installing a new AC belt? Yes to the compressor bolts. The drive belt is a stretch belt so there’s no adjustment so it helps to remove the compressor bolts to remove the belt and put the belt in place before you refit. IT’s fiddly but easier than trying to get the belt over the pulley later on.

The 250 is the model number if you look at your chassis number in the window it will it show it there. The 290 is the latest model. The 250 is the older model but with a face lift.

You should be able to pin the pump or use long threaded bolts through the spokes of the gear.

I have a 2014 fiat Ducato Motorhome and the cambelt was changed in September 2020 on 23000 miles so correct me if I’m wrong it’ll be due a change in September 2025? The clock is now 42000 and I expect by Sept 2025 it would have done circa 50000 miles, probably best I get the water pump at the same time?

Definitely makes sense to change it next time because it only adds about a hour on to the job when the belts off.

Hi I paid about £240 including the waterpump. It was a Gates complete kit. Time wise I’d say it took me 8 hours but I cleaned up a lot of areas including the engine mount studs. I cleaned the washer and expansion bottles and I prepared and painted the sump and gave the power steering pump a clean up and a coat of lacquer. I’d say you could do it in 6 with all your tools in place.

@@colinware4295 yes no problems. Went to France last year and this year it’s Spain among a few Uk destinations. Plan to go through all the coolant hoses before then. It never ends 😂.

My Ducato has only done 24k miles and I am changing the cambelt, but was going to not bother with the water pump as its hardly had any use and was thinking that the original pump is probably better quality than a new aftermarket one. However, I see your water pump was noticeably stiffer than the new one, yet only done 37k miles. Would you recommend just changing it too?

I fully understand what your saying but while your in there just change the pump it’s much easier now because there’s every chance it could fail before the next cam belt change and it’s the same strip down all over again. It’s also piece of mind.

i have seen a tech bulletin from gates for some vw belts saying change interval is 130,000 and no time specified this belt doesn't look a great deal different, every one that removes a belt seems to say the same thing which is "it looks like a new belt "

At the end of the day they all stretch and adopt tiny cracks over time. The vehicles that sit around half the time are are more prone to failure due to the stress around the tensioner. Id always change mine every 4 - 5 years it’s a lot easier than replacing your engine. Ultimately the choice is yours. The manufacturer is worried if it fails or not

While I totally agree with your point I would just like to say that under those conditions without the ancillaries connected the belt will float on the crank a pulley a little but doesn’t come off. The engine will only run for a few seconds with the intercooler disconnected. That being said It’s actually something I would not recommend and will make a new note in the videos description stating this fact. Thanks for raising the point.
