I also struggled with that top bolt for hours but finally figured it out. Start by applying WD40 (or any other penetrating liquid product) on the bolt *a day before* disassembly, or even better multiple times. With a long nozzle, spray it from within the small opening between the alternator and the compressor (seen at 2:17). From my experience reaching that bolt and having enough torque to break it free is near impossible from underneath the vehicle. Going at it from the top was far more comfortable for me, and once I tried that it was out in 15 minutes. You will need a shallow 13mm socket + 100mm (4”) extension *OR* a deep 13mm socket + 75mm (3”) extension. They should be in *3/8 drive* without any adapters. Get the socket + extension and using two hands wiggle it inside the gap, reaching from the top of the compressor and behind it. After a few tries you should feel the socket lock in, and *only then* attach your ratchet to the extension. Make sure to put enough pressure on the socket when trying to break the bolt free to avoid stripping it. - If you can’t attach your ratchet, get a smaller one. - If the bolt is hard to break free, use a medium length 3/8 drive L handle.

Thanks Jim for a brilliantly informative video, without watching it I wouldn't of stood a chance. I have just replaced my wife's winning alternator in her 2009 Alfa Mito 1.4, identical to your Fiat Punto. The Alfa Dealer quoted me £ 770.00. I bought an after market 120Amp alternator for £185.00. That's a Big saving. That top bolt is extremely difficult to get out, your socket recommendation was perfect. For others reading this I used a 1/4 inch socket drive a 75mm bar and long reach 13mm socket. The size of your hand is crucial, mine was too big but my son's was spot on long fingers slim hand is perfect. Dropping it out the bottom is a squeeze but I managed it with just loosening the air-con pipe brackets. I didn't loosen any engine mounts or jack up the sump. Thanks Jim

Thats great news, glad it helped thanks for watching and commenting 👍
@tigershoot5 жыл бұрын
For anyone watching this who has a Fiat Idea with aircon, then I can advise that the procedure can only be done by supporting the sump with a jack, then removing the engine mount on the offside and levering the engine forward enough to get the alternator out from the underneath. It is impossible to get it out otherwise. The top 13mm is very difficult to remove - took us ages.

Absolutely phenomenal, many thanks for your priceless tutorial, that's all I need at the moment. My old alternator has just gone 😢... I've been told that is a very often problem of Puntos that age and vesion. Thank you so much, God bless you Sir🎉

Nice guide! One point; I think the bolt shown at 2:17 is actually for the AC compressor. The alternator top bolt is even more hidden down in that gap, so you won't be able to see it from the top

I just changed the alternator on my punto evo 2010 and I would definitely advise removing the air con pump first. We tried to do it the same way as the video but really needed to remove the pump as it was easy to get to the alternator when removed. . Thanks for the video help though..

Hi will removing of the air con pump not make the fluid lake away? On newer models the fluid is very pricy.

@@danke4051 You just move the compressor a bit (hoses stay bolted, you don't dump the refrigerant).

Thanks for the video. I spent 30 minutes struggling with the alternator but can’t seem to get it out with that aircon pipe in the way. Any tips?
@TonvanderVliet-c4k Жыл бұрын
By removing 3 bolts of the compressor, and removing one support of the airco tube, you can carefully move the compressor a few centimeters to the back and now the upper bold can be accessed.

For anyone struggeling with this great italian design. Just remove the two lower bolts and use a big flat headed screwdriver to prie it between the attachment bracket and alternator. The allumium of the alternator arround the upper bolt will break and you can remove the bolt easily afterwards

Going to try this job, but will first need to buy an alternator. Cannot see the part number from any angle, so can anybody tell me what amperage I should buy for a 2006 grande punto (dualogic)?
@ALLTHINGSJIM5 жыл бұрын
A good car store will be able to tell you with your registration number, however there are a few different amperage alternators fitted to models depending on what extras are fitted (aircon etc.) Your best bet is to take the old one off and look at which one it is before buying if your unsure

Thank you tons Jim! Your video was really helpful, but reaching the upper screw was agony-inducing. @all the people that want to do it: get the car properly lifted so you can stand unterneath it, otherwise it's too much of a hassle in my opinion.

I've tried to follow your video and it's had some great tips, a really good video! problem is I can't get to the top alternator bolt, I've tried every socket and every extension I have and I can't get it. I have no idea how you've managed to get up there, I can't even see the bolt. Do you have any tips for getting to it? or am I going to have to drain the aircon and disconnect the hoses like the Haynes manual suggests
@ALLTHINGSJIM6 жыл бұрын
Hi there, yes the top bolt is a right pig to get onto isnt it! I pretty much just have to do it by feel, using a short 13mm socket and short extension bar, sorry i cant be much more help 👍
@ajburdett8826 жыл бұрын
ALL THINGS JIM no that's great thank you. I mean without watching your video before hand I would've had no idea what size it was xD, especially since you can't see it. I think I'm going to grab a low profile socket and some various length extensions, see if that'll do it. Luckily my alternator isn't actually broken, just the bearings have gone so it whines like crazy, and I'm fed up with the noise haha. Thanks again for your help, seems you need the perfect tool for the job haha

Ignore Haynes Manual and follow the video. I managed the top bolt with a flat ratchet ring. I did try to rotate the alternator after removing the lower bolts for better access but there was a spigot in one so no turn. Jeff B
