I knit a huge decorative pillow, folded up all my winter pajamas, put them neatly and tightly in a cloth bag and use it to fill my pillow. When winter comes, I undo the woven-in end, take them out, and do the same with my summer pajamas! Also, old comforters! Wash and dry them, you can use the fill OR fold it up and use it to fill large projects like floor pillows.

I’ve only recently started crocheting and dabbling in amigirumi. But I’ve found using an old pillow and dried beans does wonders.

I'm glad I'm not the only one using cotton balls :D Although my mother recently informed me that she actually had a bag of stuffing laying around left over from the time she sewed fabric dolls. Which was years ago. I need to check it out, see if it still works and doesn't fall apart.

I've used cotton balls too. But I found that I'd need to use more quantity of cotton as compared to the polyester fibre stuffing, to achieve the same amount of plush. Using the synthetic fibre also gives the plushie more "plush". So I find it more convenient.

I use yarn for stuffing I have tons of yarn that I brush out to make wefts. The extra yarn that falls off and gets collected by the brush I use is turned into stuffing

When I first started crochet toys I went out and bought a bag of fiber fill which was was quite expensive for just stuffing and then I had some pillows i was going to get rid of but decide to cut it open and realized I could use that instead of buying fiber fill and now my family give me their old pillows they don't want and I just use that never bought another bag of fiber fill again

Thank you for all the ideas and suggestions. Very helpful. I myself would not use my old pillows' stuffing to stuff toys. Thinking about it my pillows have been through hell. We sweat on them. Drool. Spit up from my baby. Pee from other kiddos. Pets lay on them. You may have spilt drinks on them. Dust mites amd other things could be in them. Its suggested to replace your pillows after awhile. Even if I washed them first I just wouldn't feel right stuffing a toy someone is paying for with old pillow stuffing. Now t shirts and socks yes. Was actually thinking about that. I've actually got a pile of socks missing their partners going for sock puppets and am totally using it for stuffing now.
@JaydaInStitches
@JaydaInStitches 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Monica, you definitely want to be choosy with the stuffing you use for your projects, if you're pillows are really 'used up' then they might not make the best stuffing!

You could brush thick wool with a dog/cat brush or a comb. Or you could use a normal brush but it might take a while.

I used to make yarn tails a lot. And part of the process is brushing at yarn with a dog brush to make it fluffy. Usually the dog brush collects parts of the yarn that gives a similar feel to the stuffing.. Do you think it would be possible to use that?
@JaydaInStitches
@JaydaInStitches 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Alex, as long as you didn't feel that the little fibers were really "felted" together and weren't likely to easily slip away and through the little spaces in your crochet...wool fiber, for example, would be excellent in this case!

Hi! It depends on the project, and you want to make sure the beans aren't so small that they fit through the spaces between your stitches, but otherwise, yes!
