Howdy, guys and gals. I am shown here using a fiber mesh tape on the brown coat to cover some naturally forming hairline cracks, which appear as the second coat of stucco cures.
Usually always below and above all windows and doors as they are natural stress points.
This technique is not a code requirement.
Note also that this tape is primarily used indoors with sheetrock.

When I started stuccoing my house, I started with a small sidewall in the back, so if I made a mistake, I could learn from it before moving to the front of the house. I caulked (mor-flexx), taped, and adhered using pure Portland cement on the brown coat hairlines. My mistake was, I put the finish coat on right after I put the tape on. The next morning, one of the spots I put tape and cement on was completely blistered, and the finish coat came right off in that area. Glad I made the mistake in that less significant spot before I did the front of my house.

Morning Beth Ryan, the video in question here the cracking is normal, if it didn't crack that would be odd. If water is coming from an unknown source such as a leaky parapet roof, scuppers, windows, etc, it will be tough for it too escape unless the drip or weep screeds are where they should be. Hi janiesue, I see frames sometimes inset, flush and out from 1/8 to 2 inches, that being said I don't know if you are applying just a color finish or what coat you are referring too. Our new window sticks out about 1.5 in from outside wall. My husband says we can 't build the stucco real thick next to the window as it may fall off. We have the fiber stucco. I say it will be fine. Contractor did not or could not put window fin futher?

Kirk, watch your videos often, thanks for sharing your extensive knowledge. I built my own home 30 years ago, santa barbara finish. House still looks pretty good. I do have some issues with a block wall that was scratched then a color coat applied that top of the wall has a rounded plaster cap with ladder steel in it. I have a lot of cracking in the top plaster cap. What would you recommend for covering the cracks? The tape I have seen you use would be a lot of taping. Is there a wider material I could drape over the top of the wall? I am thinking something about 10" wide. Thanks for any advice that you may have time to post. Rich Oceanside, CA

Hi Kirk, I'm a homeowner with several long cracks in our stucco. Have had guys check it out and give a quote for wrapping in fiberglass mesh and recoating. My concerns are, I have neighbors in our community that have had water intrusion with their stucco, it was installed by the same stucco contractor as ours. We have had no signs of intrusion (built in 2001), but I am concerned about a proper weeping system. My question is, how do I check for this? Thanks! Great videos by the way!

Hi Kirk, if I were to apply a whole layer a the mesh, do you recommend the sticky mesh or regular non sticky mesh?

Hi Kirk, we absolutely love your videos- best on KZbin! I have a couple questions I'm hoping you'll find time to answer. We just installed new construction windows on our older painted stucco house. There were lots of waves in the stucco surface and to correct those we chose a deeper window fin setback and are going to have to add up to 3/4" of new stucco to the entire painted stucco wall. We plan to pressure wash and scrape as much paint off as possible but we're not sure if we need to take any other measures before adding that much new stucco to an existing painted stucco wall. Any suggestions on materials for that scenario? Would adding a layer of fiberglass mesh be a good idea? I'm just concerned how well that much new material will bond. Also, I'm confused if a color coat is necessary when the stucco is going to be painted. We have a medium sanded finish. Can we achieve that same finish by properly floating out a portland base coat material? Is there a need to spend the extra money on a color coat material when it's just going to be painted? Howdy Meredith Baum, good question, if it were me I would simply caulk around the frames, where the open variations are, once this is done the only ones who will notice this simple and common fix will be you guys and only for about a week. use the cash instead to go on holiday,you asked and this is what I would do if it were me. Hope all is well. When applying poly bond on styrofoam do you brush it on or trowel it? What should be the consistency of the poly bond when you mix it? I am using styrofoam/stucco to trim my windows. Thanks in advance Konstantin

Good evening Knp Dude, the poly bond is made to be troweled on the back of styrofoam so it will adhere to the base coat of stucco. The consistency should be like whipping cream. What I'm doing in this video is adhering mesh to a basecoat by brushing the poly bond over the mesh netting so that when I come to wetting the walls before color coating the mesh stays on the wall. differenet things. stucco Kirk and Jason Giordano contributing over 850 free Stucco/Plastering videos for your education. Hi Kirk, Nice job with all your videos! Question, is it a good idea or feasible to embed a fiberglass mesh over the entire brown coat while laying the brown coat and it is still wet, lay in the mesh for crack protection?

Your brown should look like the one on the top left side of the window. It tends to crack when you try to float the brown when it's still too wet. I'm not surprise it cracked on the bottom. I'm just saying.

Evening blackhemi8, I have found that the second coat or or the brown coat as it is commonly referred too, will hairline above and below all windows and doors at a 45 degree angle especially when they are curing and especially when opened and closed as vibrations causes cracks, also settling foundation with the new added weight of stucco, rain for months at a time, wind, traffic, sunlight which heats the house causing expanding and shrinking of the cement plaster, sheathing and even studs during cure time and this information is just the tip of the iceberg. This is old kirks opinion after warranting homes for at least 10 years in writing under state laws and lifetimes with me moral obligations. Best wishes, kirk and family

All you said is true. However, this particular brown is not old enough to do all of the above in so short of time. No disrespect here just my 2 cents. And yes, most contractors won't take their time to do what you are doing so good job there.

Hi blackhemi8, I still don't understand your question, so I was forced to watch my own video, man that's rough. You say "my brown should look like the one on the top left side of the window."
